Book excerpt: "A Little Garrison" is a novel by a German novelist, playwright, and lieutenant in the Prussian Army, Fritz Oswald Bilse. In the book, Bilse reflects on his experiences carrying service in the Prussian army, which he joined in 1896. The book is a satire, and Bilse exposes the Forbach garrison's manners and the Prussian military in general. No wonder his creation became scandalously successful, leading to several re-editions and hearings in the court-martial trial taking place at Metz from 9 to 13 November 1903. As a result of the hearings, Bilse was sentenced to six months of imprisonment, and the book became even more famous.

Book excerpt: Aus einer kleinen Garnison - "A Little Garrison" was written by a simple Lieutenant Bilse, who had written under the pen name of Fritz von der Kyrburg. This little book will indirectly be the means of the moral reformation of the entire German army.Excerpt from A Little Garrison.German army circles during the days of William I., grandfather of the present ruler, has gone forever.A direct outgrowth of the luxuriousness prevalent in the German army of to-day is two other evils which in their consequences on the morals[xxi] of the officers can scarcely be overrated. They are epitomized by the two words "army usury" and "money marriages." To live beyond one's means leads to indebtedness. And there we have the simple genesis of the army usurer, so-called. He exists and thrives in every garrison in the empire, and the broad swath he mows within the ranks of the army testifies to his diligence and to his successful methods. It would be going too far to expatiate on this matter. Suffice it to say that the system by which the usurer brings hundreds, nay thousands, to disgrace and premature retirement from the army, usually involving the impoverishment of the officers' families, is wellnigh perfection in itself. Within his net are driven, at some time or other, the vast majority of the younger men as well as a great many of the older ones.

Book excerpt: Fritz Oswald Bilse (1878-1951) was a German novelist, playwright and a lieutenant in the Prussian army. He rose to instant notoriety with his novel Aus einer Kleinen Garnison: Ein Militarisches Zeitbild (A Little Garrison: A Realistic Novel of German Army Life of To-day) (1903). In later editions, he used the pseudonym "Fritz von der Kyrburg," after his home town's most prominent landmark, the Kyrburg castle. The book, in which Bilse satirises the manners of the Forbach garrison and of the Prussian army in general, became a succes de scandale. Bilse's criticism, however, was so sharp, and the location and protagonists so little disguised, that several officers who felt their honour to be under attack prosecuted Bilse in a court-martial. He was found guilty of defamation of character, was discharged from the army dishonourably, and sentenced to six months' imprisonment. The scandal only served to enhance Bilse's celebrity. He was henceforth described as the German army's enfant terrible; and the novel became popular abroad, especially in France. His other works include: Wahrheit (1904), Fallobst (1905), Stille Wege (1907), Die Technik des Romans (1909) and Verklarung (1909).

Book excerpt: Zionism, the German Empire, and Africa explores the impact on the self-perception and culture of early Zionism of contemporary constructions of racial difference and of the experience of colonialism in imperial Germany. More specifically, interrogating in a comparative analysis material ranging from mainstream satirical magazines and cartoons to literary, aesthetic, and journalistic texts, advertisements, postcards and photographs, monuments and campaign medals, ethnographic exhibitions and publications, popular entertainment, political speeches, and parliamentary reports, the book situates the short-lived but influential Zionist satirical magazine Schlemiel (1903–07) in an extensive network of nodal clusters of varying and shifting significance and with differently developed strains of cohesion or juncture that roughly encompasses the three decades from 1890 to 1920.
