Book A Little Boy s War

Download or read book A Little Boy s War written by Roy Bartlett and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2006-05-10 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this autobiographical reminiscence of the war years, Roy Bartlett relates the experiences of a young boy living in the West London suburb of Ealing, particularly during the sustained German Luftwaffe Blitz on the capital in 1940 during which he sustained injury. Millions of people in London and other cities, children as well as adults, survived the horrors and rigours of the war. Many accounts have been written, but few from the viewpoint of a child. Aged nine years at the outbreak of war his initial understanding of events was shaped by excitement, evacuation for a short period and what his mother could conjure up to eat from the meagre food rations. As Roy grew older, under ever-worsening conditions, his comprehensions of events broadened. This ensuing account of family life on the home front is a fascinating and absorbing blend of factual information and personal experience of the grim reality of those dark days, yet softened by subtle humour and boyish escapades that bring a smile to the reader. An person who lived through the period of history and the younger generations that follow, will find this narrative to be an informative and valuable historical account of a young lads life throughout that terrible time.

Book excerpt: Two bombs over Japan. Two shells. One called Little Boy, one called Fat Man. Three days apart. The one implicit in the other. Brothers. Named one of Flavorwire's best independent books of 2014, and winner of the 2013 Horatio Nelson Fiction Prize. In this striking debut novel, the atomic bombs dropped on Japan are personified as Fat Man and Little Boy. This small measure of humanity is a cruelty the bombs must suffer. Given life from death, the brothers' journey is one of surreal and unsettling discovery, transforming these symbols of mass destruction into beacons of longing and hope. "Impressive. . . The novel straddles a hybrid genre of historical magical realism." —The Japan Times "Meginnis's talent is his ability to make the reader feel empathy for souls who killed so many. . . Many pages in this novel feel like engravings . . . Meginnis has written one of the best, most natural novels about the atomic bombs." —Nick Ripatrazone, The Millions "[An] imaginative debut. . . Meginnis' story is both surprising and incisive." —Publishers Weekly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Working alone, to start with, I filled three pages of legal pads with two columns per page with notes on events in my life. The title of the book came from the incessant questioning by my daughters for stories of my life, and of the lives of those near and dear to me. In retirement since 1988, my wife and I have spent the winters in a deluxe country club complex in Florida and our summers on our 11-acre farm in Connecticut. I played golf, spent afternoons in the condominium pool, and, following advice given to me by my dad's brother, a doctor, I have a three-ounce martini every night to keep the blood thin and the heart relaxed.

Book A Little Boy

Download or read book A Little Boy written by Del Hart and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-12-03 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of true stories that happened in the life of the author Del Hart on a dairy farm in Central Pennsylvania. After Del was blessed with his own children, he would often lie with one of them in bed at bedtime and tell these stories loud enough in order that all four children could hear in the adjoining bedrooms before they went to sleep. All the stories deal with Del's family. His family consisted of his mom and dad, Judy, Rod, his twin sister Deb, and Matthew. Judy was three years older than Del, and Rod was one year older. Matthew was born fourteen years later than his other brothers and sisters. For this reason, Matthew is not mentioned in many of the stories. Even though the stories occur at different times in Del's early life, they all begin with the same sentence. Del's children loved this group of words and would often start the story by reciting this sentence. Their dad would then choose a story, from memory, and finish it. Del's children, Leah, Thomas, Lydia, and Timothy, heard one story each night and, in time, heard these stories many times. However, Picking Up Pears, The Bees Nest and Deb's Shoe, and The Cow Story were some of their favorites. Del would like to thank his children for the special times he shared with them during these bedtime stories. The stories you are about to read have all been heard by Del's children many times. Del hopes that you will enjoy these stories as his children did.
