Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Little Book of English Prose Tun Editor of this Little Book has endeavoured to present the chosen passages as nearly as possible in the form in which they left the hands of their authors. Something, indeed, has been conceded to modern punctuation where the original seemed unduly misleading, but the spelling has been left as the authors themselves apparently intended it to be. Their seeming arbitrariness is often in truth compliance with strict rules, though possibly of the writer's own making; and when variety in spelling is no serious obstacle to ready apprehension, it is surely to be preferred to the uniformity founded on the pronunciation of the majority, with which we are threatened. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Book of English Literature This little book is not a mere abridgment of any History or Histories of the subject which the author has already written. He has endeavoured to utilise in it, not merely the experience thus gained, and the reading of more than half a century, but also the knowledge, of what is likely to be required by its possible users, furnished by practice long ago as a schoolmaster both in England and in Scotland, and more recently as a Professor of the matter and an Examiner in many different Universities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of English Prose: 1470-1900 When called upon to justify the scanty time allotted in English education to the national litera ture, defenders of the grand old fortifying classical curriculum. Have often pointed out that nobody acquires the art of writing Latin prose without inci dentally bestowing close attention upon a number of the choicest pieces of English prose offered for the purpose of translation. For those students of Latin who reached the standard of a good sixth-form, or of classical honours at a university, the defence was not without reason; though for the reduced number of classical students to-day it is possibly less adequate than it was, since the modern desire to find interesting and novel material sometimes leads the teacher or examiner to select a tricky piece of current journalism in preference to a model of pure style, just as it leads him in dealing with younger pupils to displace Caesar and his battalions in favour of a dialogue about a half-holiday and a cricket match. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of English Prose Fiction The Free Public Library of Newark, New Jersey, has compiled a list of one hundred of.the best novels. The list, it is said, does not claim to include the one hundred best novels. About sixty of the books are acknowledged classics; the remaining forty include some of the more noteworthy of the recent novels others were added to give variety, and to insure that no one consulting the list would fail to find the titles of at least a few books that he had read and enjoyed. In the same spirit the Aurora Public Library presents the list to its readers as a guide in the selection of what is worth reading in fiction. We miss from the list the names of Fielding and Richardson, fathers of the English novel; of Sienkiewicz, the brilliant Polish novelist; of Cervantes, the Spaniard, whose Don Quixote is among the world-famous books; of Freytag and Auerbach, who have given us such convincing pictures of German life and manners; of Mrs. Stowe, whose Uncle Tom's Cabin was an epoch-making book. But we take the list as we find it, assured that it contains nothing unworthy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of English Prose Fiction and Juvenile Books in the Chicago Public Library Books especially suitable for young people are indicated by the case letter H. Under the author's name are given the titles of his or her books in alphabetical order, except in the case of series, which are arranged as the books should be read. Contents of volumes of short stories are given under the author's name. Works having a historical basis, and descriptive novels, are so indicated by a note appended to the title under the author's name only. When this information forms no part of the title it is enclosed in brackets. Titles are entered under the first word not an article, and also under an important, or catch-word, when such occurs in a title, followed by the author's surname. For the benefit of those who wish to plan a systematic course of reading in fic tion, the list of bibliographical aids which follows has been compiled. Many of the books mentioned in this list, especially the catalogues of fiction in various libraries, have been freely used in the preparation of this catalogue. The titles of all new accessions to the library, since January 1, 1898, will be found on the bulletin boards in the Delivery Room, in the quarterly bulletins, and in the public card catalogue. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Prose: 1137-1890 In this volume, as in its predecessor, the remarks in the Introduction are not intended to take the place of a history of English Literature. Here and there they furnish informa tion not usually found in elementary text-books; here and there they have not even that excuse for existence, being often merely hints or suggestions or explanations which the editor wished to make; in a few instances it may be thought that their proper place is the Preface rather than the Introduction. In printing the earlier texts that is, all before Sidney's Arcadia the old spelling is preserved, except that f, A, 3, i, j, u, 17, have been reduced to modern forms and usage. Such inconsistencies as appear are due to variations in the texts themselves or to variant editorial methods in the standard editions. The punctuation of the earlier texts has been modernized, sometimes by me, sometimes by the editor whom I follow. In the later texts, the spelling and punctuation of standard editions has usually been retained, even where they differ from modern usage; but in a few instances, where the older punctuation was not only faulty but seriously misleading, I have not scrupled to change it. In no such instance, however, was there any doubt as to the author's meaning. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the English Prose Fiction The present list of Fiction is put forth to supply a want that has long been felt. Although the need of a Catalogue of this department is not so urgent as that of the other departments of the Library, yet it was thought desirable, in view of the great expense attending, and time necessary for compiling and printing a complete Catalogue of our collection, to print this first, and as soon as the income of the Library will permit, to publish the Catalogue of the other departments. The following list includes all the Library possesses in this department, to October, 1874. The Authors and Titles are arranged in one. alphabet, the easier mode of reference.it is thought. In cases of Pseudonyms, (printed pseud.) a cross reference from the assumed to the real name (when known) will be found, after which the assumed name follows in parentheses and italics, as: Markel, Ik, pseud. See Mitchell, D. G. Mitchell, Donald Grant. (It Martel.) Initials or names within parentheses and in Roman type, are such as belong to. but seldom used by, such authors, as: Hook, Theodore (Edward.) Many works in this department are published, as: By the author of. In all such cases they have been placed under the title of the first or best known work of that author, as: Taken upon trust, By the author of Recommended to mercy. Under Recommended to mercy will be found all works by that author. A few titles have been classified, as: Fairy tales; French, translations from: Herman, Swedish, Danish and Norwegian, translations from; and Musical stories. A class of Historical Fiction would have been very desirable, but the shortness of time given for the mere clerical work on the volume, precluded this; the Library, however, possesses such a list, issued by the Public Library of Boston, which may be consulted, upon application. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Simple History of English Literature: With Illustrative Extracts Young people can scarcely begin too early to learn the beauties of our English poets and prose writers - to enter the society so numerous and so gentle of kings and statesmen lingering patiently, not to grant audience but to gain it, in those plainly furnished and narrow ante-rooms, our bookcase shelves. If I have given any young folks a desire to wander further into the glorious world of which this book is but a glimpse, to use for themselves the golden key admitting to that world which all possess - the power to read - I shall be amply satis fied. If, in addition to helping my young friends, I may have met the want felt by many another teacher, as by myself, of an easy introduction to the study of English literature, the purpose of this little book will be accomplished. Book English Prose From Bacon to Hardy Classic Reprint

Download or read book English Prose From Bacon to Hardy Classic Reprint written by Edmund Kemper Broadus and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Prose From Bacon to Hardy The selections in this book have been chosen with two purposes - firstly, to give ample representation to each author included, and, secondly, to limit the number of authors so that the book may not be too bulky to serve as a text-book in courses on the history of English literature. Owing to the inclusion of minor writers, many volumes of selections present the student with too large and complex a mass of material. Other books, confining themselves to one type of prose such as the essay, are too narrow in their scope for use in courses on literary history. The plan adopted here has necessitated the omission of many authors. For example, Burton, De Quincey, Landor, Newman, Pater, and others have not been given because, by reason of style or subject, they can hardly be considered as representative figures. Other writers, such as Fuller, Sir William Temple, and Leigh Hunt, have been omitted because their main characteristics are sufficiently represented in one of their greater contemporaries. The novelists have been represented by adequate selections from those writers only who arc most important in the tradition and development of the novel. Boswell's Life of Johnson has been passed over because the book, effective by its mass, can hardly have justice done it by an extract. Book Modern English Prose

Download or read book Modern English Prose written by George Rice Carpenter and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern English Prose: Selected and Edited Our aim in compiling this volume has been to present the largest possible amount of illustrative material for classes in rhetoric and English composition. In proportion as the secondary teaching of English becomes more adequate, the need of instructing freshmen in elementary rhetorical principles tends to disappear, and with it much of the importance of a text-book of rhetoric. Even where the text-book cannot be dispensed with altogether, the experienced teacher will wish to have it supplemented as much as possible by the reading and study of good models. Practically, as we have all found, this must be done by using a volume of illustrative material. But the available books of this sort are few. They contain comparatively little matter, and this matter consists mainly of short extracts, often illustrative only of one special form of composition. Our aim has been to present a rich store of material in complete essays, stories, chapters, or component parts of larger works, to provide illustration for all the main forms of composition, and to offer as little annotation and explanation as possible.
