Book Genre Reception and Adaptation in the Twilight Series

Download or read book Genre Reception and Adaptation in the Twilight Series written by Anne Morey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the criticism on Stephenie Meyer's immensely popular 'Twilight' novels has underrated or even disparaged the books while belittling the questionable taste of an audience that many believe is being inculcated with anti-feminist values. Avoiding a repetition of such reductive critiques of the series's purported shortcomings with respect to literary merit and political correctness, this volume adopts a cultural studies framework to explore the range of scholarly concerns awakened by the 'Twilight novels and their filmic adaptations. Contributors examine 'Twilight's debts to its predecessors in young adult, vampire, and romance literature; the problems of cinematic adaptation; issues in fan and critical reception in the United States and Korea; and the relationship between the series and contemporary conceptualizations of feminism, particularly girl culture. Placing the series within a broad tradition of literary history, reception studies, and filmic adaptation, the collection offers scholars the opportunity to engage with the books' importance for studies of popular culture, gender, and young adult literature.

This book was released on 2011-11 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, Martin Luther University (Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: Monstrous Loves and Beautiful Beasts: The Twilight Series in Literary Contexts, language: English, abstract: The vampire is one of the favourite artificial characters in popular literature. As a mythical creature that transcends the borders of life and death it has been used to depict the dissolution of boundaries in different forms of societies and belief systems since the ancient Greece, but varied in form according to social and individual developments. This paper will first give a short overview of the origin and development of female vampires and lamiae in literature. Then a closer look will be cast on a few selected representations of the female vampire to show the various ways of their depictions, the similarities in their features as well as differences in their symbolic appliance. Finally, the female vampires in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight will be focussed upon to further elaborate the characteristics of the "modern female vampire" in her family setting as opposed to her predecessors.

Book The Vampire in Bram Stoker s Dracula and Stephenie Meyer s Twilight Series

This book was released on 2020-07-09 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, University of Cologne (Englisches Seminar I), language: English, abstract: The allegation of the vampire’s metamorphosis and the less frequent academic recognition of newer vampire fiction are what motivates this Thesis to examine the vampire yet once again. With the help of Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897) and Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Series (2005-2008), this paper will investigate the research question if the vampire of older literary works and the vampire of newer literary works are in fact so different from each other as previous academic works suggest. Throughout the last years, a large number of new vampire fictions, television shows and movies emerged, and the vampire slowly gains a representation in academic works. Most of these works deal with the vampire’s symbolic nature, his function and what he represents, but it is evident that older works get treated significantly different than newer ones and they almost never include the vampire’s folkloric or "real’" background. People of the academic works around the figure of the vampire will agree that a significant change in the vampire’s nature between the nineteenth and the twenty-first century took place, because while our ancestor’s vampires, such as human blood-sucking Nosferatu or Dracula, bring terror and evil to its people and are academically recognized far more often, the vampires nowadays seem to be tamed, sympathetic beings that utterly reject human blood.

Book Freed from Desire The Concept of Romantic Love and the Desexualisation of the Vampire in Stephenie Meyer s Twilight Novels

Download or read book Freed from Desire The Concept of Romantic Love and the Desexualisation of the Vampire in Stephenie Meyer s Twilight Novels written by Sophie-Charlotte Claassen and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelorarbeit aus dem Jahr 2010 im Fachbereich Amerikanistik - Literatur, Universität Hamburg, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: 1. Introduction No matter what the time of day, there seems to be no escaping Twilight, Stephenie Meyer's immensely popular vampire saga centred around the morbid love story of a self-conscious teenage girl longing to die in order to spend eternity on the side of her extraordinarily beautiful vampire boyfriend. So far, all four books in the saga have sold more than 85 million copies and have been translated into 37 languages, including Chinese, Vietnamese and Croatian, whereas Hollywood's film adaptations of Twilight and New Moon have lured millions of spectators into cinemas around the world. It is to assume that this popularity with the masses is the reason why Meyer's novels stand accused of being trivial and are being neglected in literary studies, although Twilight has meanwhile become a worldwide cultural phenomenon. However, such criticism is not a novelty concerning vampire fiction. John Polidori's The Vampyre became an immediate best-seller after its publishing in 1819, but definitely not a critics' favourite. The same accounts for Bram Stoker's Dracula in 1897. Ever since the vampire's popularity increased alongside the advance of cinema, it stands accused of being nothing but the plain product of an unsophisticated entertainment machinery. Nevertheless, vampire novels like Dracula finally found their way into literary studies as they - like Gothic fiction in general - reflect on current developments in society as well as on the particular problems and fears of its members. This is the reason why I chose Meyer's novels as a topic for my BA paper. In her vampire saga, leaving aside some flaws in literary style, Meyer brilliantly captures the feeling of teenage angst, sexual insecurity and social alienation in a world where "misery has come home" in the shape of terrorist attacks and high school massacres. A world where divorce rates

Book Seduced by Twilight

Download or read book Seduced by Twilight written by Natalie Wilson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stephenie Meyer's Twilight saga has maintained a tight grip on the contemporary cultural imagination. This timely and critical work examines how the Twilight series offers addictively appealing messages about love, romance, sex, beauty and body image, and how these charged themes interact with cultural issues regarding race, class, gender and sexuality. Through a careful analysis of the texts, the fandom and the current socio-historical climate, this work argues that the success of the Twilight series stems chiefly from Meyer's negotiation of cultural mores.

This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, University of Frankfurt (Main), language: English, abstract: The supernatural has always had a strong appeal with human mankind. In the folklore of nearly every society, tales about supernatural beings can be found making this fascination universe. Supernatural creatures have also been protagonists of books, comics, music and movies for centuries haunting the audience ́s dreams in the nights (Stanfield, p.1). Among all of them, vampires and werewolves seem to be the most enduring having made their way straight into the 21st century. Today, Vampires and werewolves are everywhere with the Twilight series leading the way. The release of the four books by Stephenie Meyer can be seen as a major reason for the new hype about the supernatural beings in our time. It is the most popular series for children since Joanne K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels. In 2008, “Eclipse” the third book of the Twilight saga ranked even higher than “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” pushing Joanne K. Rowling down to the second place of the bestseller list. The success was tremendous not only with young people but with an audience of all ages making the Twilight series the most commercially successful work on Vampires in the beginning of the 21st century (Anatol, p.1). But how are Vampires and werewolves portrayed by Stephenie Meyer and how do these supernatural creatures differ from their ancestors in myth and classical literature? Within the paper this question will be analyzed. Therefore, the history of the Vampire as well as the Werewolf legend will be traced back. The portrayal of Vampires and Werewolves in classical masterpieces of English literature as well as in the Twilight series will then be compared to the myth and to one another. In the end, the results will be interpreted.
