Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Phaenomena is a didactic epic poem modelled on Hesiod's Works and Days and cleverly updated to appeal to contemporary readers interested in new trends in Greek poetry, philosophy and science. Aratus invokes a beneficent Stoic Zeus who has created the constellations and their movements to help men follow the progress of the solar year, and also provides a great variety of signs in sky, air, earth and sea as warnings of weather changes." "This volume presents for the first time in English an edition of the poem with a full introduction, a facing translation and a line by line commentary. The introduction explains the literary and scientific background, the characteristic features of Aratus' language, style and metre, and the transmission of the text to the end of the Middle Ages. The commentary gives help with the content of the poem and aims to discuss and resolve the many problems of text and interpretation caused by Aratus' innovative use of language. The text is based on a new reading of the MSS, including one not used before."--BOOK JACKET.

Book The Sky Is Our Song

Download or read book The Sky Is Our Song written by Aratus and published by . This book was released on 2025 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ancient Greek guide to the heavens, translated in a new accessible modern English edition. A poetic guide to the heavens, the Phaenomena of Aratus--dating from around 270 BCE--was widely known across the ancient world, second only in fame to the works of Homer. Beginning with an invocation to Zeus, the poem describes the constellations of the northern and southern skies, the celestial sphere, and weather signs. Aratus's vivid work offered a complete handbook of astronomy, constellations, and weather, and this treatise on the night sky was later translated or adapted by luminaries including Cicero, Virgil, and Ovid. The Phaenomena remained popular throughout the Renaissance and had more than sixty printed editions by the early seventeenth century, but its notoriety has faded in the modern world. With this edition, renowned translator and amateur astronomer Stanley Lombardo renders Aratus's poem in reader-friendly vernacular English verse. Complete with endnotes, an accessible introduction, and astronomically accurate illustrations, The Sky Is Our Song brings this master poet's celebration of the sky to a twenty-first-century audience, inviting new readers to follow Aratus on a visual journey through star signs, moon phases, weather phenomena, and all wonders of the heavens.

Book Terrestrial Celestial Globes

Download or read book Terrestrial Celestial Globes written by Edward Luther Stevenson and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2021-05-07 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents one of the very first detailed and comprehensive historical treatises on globes terrestrial and celestial in English language since the numerous works published before its appearance tended to give only a very general consideration to the uses of globes, including a reference to their important structural features, and to the problems geographical and astronomical in the solution of which they may be counted of service. The aim of this study was to treat the subject historically, beginning with the earliest references to the belief in a spherical earth and a spherical firmament encircling it, and it was inspired by the author's hope that the preliminary study may lead to a number of independent and thorough investigations of important individual examples, to the end of clearly setting forth their great documentary value. Book The Revival of Planetary Astronomy in Carolingian and Post Carolingian Europe

Download or read book The Revival of Planetary Astronomy in Carolingian and Post Carolingian Europe written by Bruce S. Eastwood and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002: Before the introduction of Greco-Arabic mathematical astronomy in the 12th century, what astronomy was there in the medieval West? While we know of developments in computus, which calculated with solar and lunar cycles to create Christian calendars, and in monastic time-telling by the stars, was anything known of the five planets? Using glosses, commentaries, and diagrams to the early manuscripts of four classical Latin authors - Pliny, Macrobius, Martianus Capella, and Calcidius - Bruce Eastwood provides evidence for the extensive development of the sixth liberal art, astronomy, from the time of Charlemagne forward, with a particular focus on the diagrams used and invented by Carolingian and later scholars. Learning to understand the motions of planets in terms of spatial, or geometrical, arrangement, they mined these Roman writings for astronomical and cosmological doctrines, in the process not only absorbing but also creating models of planetary motions. What they accomplished over three centuries was to establish a basic set of models that showed the reasoned order of the planets in the heavens.
