Book excerpt: Tapestries uncovers the unique patterns that you weave throughout life. At a time of immense interest in biography, here is a unique set of keys to understanding the pattern and rhythms of your life. The unfolding phases of life are presented as the 'warp' of personal growth. You are invited to consider the 'shuttle' of the threads you use as the 'weft' of your life story. These threads include your temperament, gender, love, family, ethnicity, birth order, and developing relationships. A vivid picture of adult growth is presented. You can follow twelve very different people and their stories as they go through each life phase and wonder what will happen next. You can consider how you would respond to the choices they face. Life's dilemmas are explored: career versus parenting and choices related to old age. This opens up options: which roads to take in life and encouragement to reflect.

Book A Tapestry of Life

Download or read book A Tapestry of Life written by Daphne Miller and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Tapestry of Life is the true story of a woman who, in her quest to fulfill her dreams and have the family that she had always imagined, struggled with pain, disillusionment and heartbreak but came through it with an understanding of the rich beauty of life. Like many young girls growing up in the 1950's and 1960's, Daphne had dreams of growing up, getting married and having a family. She had well-organized plans for her future. She did not have any concept of the roadblocks that she would encounter or the challenges that she would have to meet as she journeyed toward this goal. Through a diagnosis of infertility and decisions about fertility treatments, to pursuit of adoption, to marrying and acquiring step children, to eventually achieving a pregnancy and then to gaining a daughter through an informal foster care situation she eventually created her eclectic family. Despite her dreams of having children who transitioned easily into adulthood, her children each seemed to have some struggle to overcome. The family faced challenges including developmental disabilities, cancer, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, anorexia, bi-polar disorder and teen pregnancy. Over the years Daphne learned a lot and grew stronger. This is a story about perseverance and finding peace in the unpredictable nature of this life. The author's faith matured through the challenges and struggles and became the foundation on which her family developed. She found that with faith she did not need all the answers and she did not need to know the future. She learned that the path is not always clear but we can still enjoy the journey.

Book excerpt: A remarkable history of First Lady Michelle Obama’s mixed ancestry, American Tapestry by Rachel L. Swarns is nothing less than a breathtaking and expansive portrait of America itself. In this extraordinary feat of genealogical research—in the tradition of The Hemmingses of Monticello and Slaves in the Family—author Swarns, a respected Washington-based reporter for the New York Times, tells the fascinating and hitherto untold story of Ms. Obama’s black, white, and multiracial ancestors; a history that the First Lady herself did not know. At once epic, provocative, and inspiring, American Tapestry is more than a true family saga; it is an illuminating mirror in which we may all see ourselves.

  • Author : Nanci Adler
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2017-07-28
  • ISBN : 1351486993
  • Pages : 281 pages

Download or read book Tapestry of Memory written by Nanci Adler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, contributors present narratives and explore the way they influence the perception of the past. While acknowledging the debate about the validity of qualitative research based on narratives, this volume aims to illuminate how truth and evidence form part of a much wider debate on the representation of history. The volume includes the work of historians but the interdisciplinary nature of the contributions shows that the validity debate also applies to the broader fields of cultural studies, sociology, and other social sciences. The distinction between memory and testimony is a crucial theme. Memory, though selective, is the basis of testimony. Testimony provides an audience with information that becomes evidence of what was seen or experienced. Such evidence can form the basis of legal truth.Nanci Adler and Selma Leydesdorff divide the volume into three core sections: Official Testimony and Other Facts and Evidence; The Creation of New History and the Integration of Collective Memory in the Story of One's Self; and Claims Based on Narratives vs. Official History. After a comprehensive introduction by the editors, the volume offers twelve essays by leading scholars. This work is a new offering in Transaction's acclaimed Memory and Narrative series.

Book Tapestry A Book Club Recommendation

Download or read book Tapestry A Book Club Recommendation written by Beth Duke and published by Art of Dixie. This book was released on 2020-03-06 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beth Duke, Author of #1 Best Seller It All Comes Back to You, delivers an emotional and inspiring novel about family, from the roots that ground us to the branches that allow us to take flight. "Beth Duke is a poet disguised as a Southern novelist. Tapestry made me laugh, made me think and in the end, made me cry. Tapestry delivers on ALL counts." -Dan Brown, Author of Reunion Twenty-two-year-old Skye Willis lives in Eufaula, Alabama, a tourist mecca of stately homes and world-class bass fishing. Her childhood friends are either stuck at dead ends or have moved on to accomplish Big Things. Skye's grandmother, Verna, insists on being called "Sparrow" because she suspects her ancestors were Muscogee Creek. She dresses in faux deerskin and experiments with ancient Native American recipes, offering a myth or legend to anyone who will listen. Skye has no idea what to do with her life. She's smart as hell, but she has no faith or knowledge there's something out there she was "born to do." Nor does she know much of anything about her father, who died in Afghanistan when she was a toddler. He and his family are a mystery her mother won't discuss. But when Sparrow is determined to confirm her Creek ancestry through genetic testing, Skye joins in. The results hit like a DNA bomb, launching them both on a path filled with surprises and life-changing events. Skye learns a harder truth than she ever expected. Alternating chapters between Skye's Alabama life and an intertwining tale of greed, deceit, and control in Texas, this story offers proof that all life is a woven tapestry of past, present, and future. In Beth Duke's uplifting and soul-singing voice, TAPESTRY is Southern Fiction at its best; you will cry, you will laugh out loud, and you will wish you were a member of the beautiful, matriarchal family Duke has created for her readers. This book is a must-read for fans of Fannie Flagg, Anne Rivers Siddons, and Rebecca Wells.

Book The Story of the Bayeux Tapestry Unraveling the Norman Conquest

Download or read book The Story of the Bayeux Tapestry Unraveling the Norman Conquest written by David Musgrove and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive and fully illustrated guide to the Bayeux Tapestry. The full history of the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings and the story of the tapestry itself. Most people know that the Bayeux Tapestry depicts the moment when the last Anglo-Saxon king of England, Harold Godwinson, was defeated at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 by his Norman adversary William the Conqueror. However, there is much more to this historic treasure than merely illustrating the outcome of this famous battle. Full of intrigue and violence, the tapestry depicts everything from eleventh-century political and social life—including the political machinations on both sides of the English Channel in the years leading up to the Norman Conquest—to the clash of swords and stamp of hooves on the battle field. Drawing on the latest historical and scientific research, authors David Musgrove and Michael Lewis have written the definitive book on the Bayeux Tapestry, taking readers through its narrative, detailing the life of the tapestry in the centuries that followed its creation, explaining how it got its name, and even offering a new possibility that neither Harold nor William were the true intended king of England. Featuring stunning, full- color photographs throughout, The Story of the Bayeux Tapestry explores the complete tale behind this medieval treasure that continues to amaze nearly one thousand years after its creation.
