Book A Life in Three Lands

Download or read book A Life in Three Lands written by Jacques Guiton and published by Branden Books. This book was released on 1991 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is no surprise that Jacques Guiton, an architect who subscribes to Le Corbusier's idea of harmony as a controlling principle of design, should have produced a balanced and shapely book of memoirs. Between his early experiences at his grandfather's French country place to his retirement years at his own similar old farmhouse in America, Guiton chronicles events in Paris, Brittany, German prison camps and America. His prose is clean and clear and draws on all the senses.

Book The Making of Land and the Making of India

Download or read book The Making of Land and the Making of India written by Nikita Sud and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-30 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is land and how is it made? In this path-breaking study of sites in western, eastern, and southern India, Nikita Sud argues that land is not simply the solid surface of the earth. It is best understood as a materially and conceptually dynamic realm, intimately tied to the social. As such, land transitions across porous registers of territory, property, authority, the sacred, history and memory, and contested access and exclusion. While states, markets, and politics in post-liberalization India try to make land suitable for 'growth' and 'development', the relationship between the soil and institutions is never straightforward. A state attempting to order a layered topography is frequently stretched into shadowy domains of informality and unsanctioned practices. A market may be advanced, but remains precariously embedded in sociality. Politics could challenge the land-making of the state and markets. It may also effect compromises. Attempts at constructing a durable landed order thus reveal our own (dis)orders. In attempting to 'make' the land, Sud's intriguing study shows how the land simultaneously 'makes' us.

Book Land is Life Conservancy is Life

Download or read book Land is Life Conservancy is Life written by Ccameron Welch and published by BASLER AFRIKA BIBLIOGRAPHIEN. This book was released on 2018-08-02 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Community-based natural resource management or CBNRM, with its attention to community participation, its call for de-centralization of rights to local resource users through democratic and equitable structures, and its potential to deliver benefits to local livelihoods and national conservation interests now forms the predominant strategy for rural development in the communal areas of Namibia. This framework is presumed by the Namibian government and international bodies concerned with conservation and development to deliver measurable and positive economic, environmental, and political results for the State and all of its citizens. CBNRM has taken on particular form and significance for the San in Namibia. Focusing on the experiences of a group of predominantly San communities in the North-East of Namibia, the historical and contemporary situations of the San of the N‡a Jaqna Conservancy and their engagement with CBNRM are examined. In looking to the future, this work seeks to understand what mechanisms and institutions give indigenous groups, such as the San, a foothold in the State and an avenue through which to navigate and shape their own modernity(ies). This work explores the modalities through which conservation comes together with interests of indigenous groups and how these groups deploy leverage gained through invoking conservation as discourse and practice.
