Mine - or at least my first memory - began with a box of crayons. I started out remembering my idyllic middle-class white suburban upbringing, and then, all of a sudden, all the forgotten traumas rose to the surface. Childhood happiness, freedom, and privilege were replaced by murder, divorce, and that true horror; junior high.

Book Half Forgotten Things

  • Author : Nilda Aberasturi
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2010-09-24
  • ISBN : 9780692007631
  • Pages : 275 pages

Download or read book Half Forgotten Things written by Nilda Aberasturi and published by . This book was released on 2010-09-24 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Half-Forgotten Things focuses on the Aberasturis, a prominent Spanish Basque family in Malitbog, a town in the island of Southern Leyte, the Philippines. The author's father, Dionisio Aberasturi, a Basque from Vizcaya, Spain who came to the Philippines at the early part of the 20th century, at the hub of his family and of this memoir, is defined not only by his unshakable uprightness, but by his actions, all the more remarkable because they are not fictional. When the author is eight years old, Pearl Harbor is bombed and life on the Philippines, and everywhere else, changes dramatically. It is riveting to hear the details of life under Japanese Occupation from the author who, while extremely knowledgeable about the Second World War, nonetheless writes with a child's clarity of vision. Particularly compelling is the child's narrative of the Japanese occupation during World War II, eye-opening in its unflinching depiction of brutality interspersed with the ongoing routine of everyday life. Two sisters of the author are at a boarding school in a Basque village of Larrauri near Guernica when the Spanish Civil War breaks out. This event is vividly recounted. The Battle of Leyte Gulf, "the greatest of all naval battles," is described in precise, almost cinematic, detail, with the young author a witness to the beginnings of this definitive historical event. After the war, since the U. S. Army needs abaca, it becomes possible to restart the family business. The author works hard alongside his father until he goes off to college. While he is away, his father dies in a tragic accident, and the author returns for the funeral. The absence of his father is as palpable as his presence always was. The reader is swept with the enormous emptiness he leaves.

Book Half a Life

Download or read book Half a Life written by Jill Ciment and published by Crown. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jill Ciment weaves an unforgettable tale of survival, compassion, and courage, in this haunting recollection of a child surrounded by confusion and madness, and her struggle to find an identity. Half a Life traces Jill Ciment's family from Toronto to the California desert—a landscape and culture so alien to her father that the last vestiges of sanity leave him. As madness engulfs him he becomes increasingly brutal and the family, grasping at survival, throws him out the door. Having no understanding that he has done anything wrong, he first lives in his car at the end of the driveway, waiting to be invited back in, before exiting completely from their lives. Poor and fatherless, Ciment spends the years from age fourteen to seventeen, as a gang girl, a professional forger, a stripper, a corporate spy, and finally, a high school dropout who by age eighteen has seduced her art teacher, a man nearly three decades her senior and bluffed her way into college in an effort to shape a future. Ciment is cutting, insightful and clearly unapologetic as she details the confusion and bravado of a child heroine whose dreams and tenacity allow her finally, to create the life she has been so desperately seeking.

Book A Life Well Danced Maria Zybina s Russian Heritage Her Legacy of Classical Ballet and Character Dance Across Europe

Download or read book A Life Well Danced Maria Zybina s Russian Heritage Her Legacy of Classical Ballet and Character Dance Across Europe written by Jane Gall Spooner and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2022-12-20 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relatively little has been written about how ballet teachers become teachers themselves and how each generation passes on its experience to the next. The teacher-dancer relationship within the context of the Russian classical tradition is a theme of “A Life Well Danced”. It is presented through the lens of a young girl who lived through emigration and displacement at the time of the Russian Revolution, who experienced this again as an adult after the Second World War and who went on to establish a successful career as a teacher, examiner and choreographer. The book also touches on the teaching and performing of European character dance which is also an under-appreciated field. “A Life Well Danced” was inspired by the author’s direct connection through Zybina and her teachers, Nicolai Legat in London, Evgenia Eduardova in Berlin and Elena Poliakova in Belgrade, to the flowering of Russian classical ballet in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries when Marius Petipa was choreographing works such as Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty. An interview with Zybina provides the framework for material in memoirs and first-hand accounts that are drawn upon for their lively descriptions of the Imperial Theatre School and the Mariinsky ballet company in St. Petersburg. Born in Moscow, Zybina and her family fled to Europe at the time of the Russian Revolution. Her first marriage to an English diplomat took her to Belgrade and a career as a dancer and ballet mistress in Yugoslavia. The Second World War saw her still in Yugoslavia with her second husband when they and a number of close friends worked in intelligence on behalf of the Allies. A strange twist of events, brought them to England where Zybina established her ballet school and became an examiner for the Federation of Russian Classical Ballet and the Society of Russian Style Ballet Schools.

Book The Forgotten Americans

Download or read book The Forgotten Americans written by Isabel Sawhill and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sobering account of a disenfranchised American working class and important policy solutions to the nation's economic inequalities One of the country's leading scholars on economics and social policy, Isabel Sawhill addresses the enormous divisions in American society--economic, cultural, and political--and what might be done to bridge them. Widening inequality and the loss of jobs to trade and technology has left a significant portion of the American workforce disenfranchised and skeptical of governments and corporations alike. And yet both have a role to play in improving the country for all. Sawhill argues for a policy agenda based on mainstream values, such as family, education, and work. Although many have lost faith in government programs designed to help them, there are still trusted institutions on both the local and the federal level that can deliver better job opportunities and higher wages to those who have been left behind. At the same time, the private sector needs to reexamine how it trains and rewards employees. This book provides a clear-headed and middle-way path to a better-functioning society in which personal responsibility is honored and inclusive capitalism and more broadly shared growth are once more the norm.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of Europe: A History comes a uniquely ambitious masterpiece that will thrill fans of lost civilizations While Germany, Italy, France, and England dominate our conceptions of Europe, these modern states are relatively recent constructs. In this brilliant work of historical reconstruction, Norman Davies brings back to life the long-forgotten empire of Aragon, which once controlled the Western Mediterranean; the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, once the largest country in Europe, and the Kingdom of the Rock, founded by ancient Britons when neither England nor Scotland existed. In the tradition of Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs, and Steel, Davies subverts our established view of the past and urges us to reconsider the impetus for the rise and fall of nations.
