This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular American essayist, novelist, and journalist CHARLES DUDLEY WARNER (1829-1900) was renowned for the warmth and intimacy of his writing, which encompassed travelogue, biography and autobiography, fiction, and more, and influenced entire generations of his fellow writers. Here, the prolific writer turned editor for his final grand work, a splendid survey of global literature, classic and modern, and it's not too much to suggest that if his friend and colleague Mark Twain-who stole Warner's quip about how "everybody complains about the weather, but nobody does anything about it"-had assembled this set, it would still be hailed today as one of the great achievements of the book world. Highlights from Volume 15 include: . the memoirs of Samuel Foote . the writings of Anatole France . excerpts from Saint Francis of Assisi . letters and speeches by Benjamin Franklin . the historical essays of Edward Augustus Freeman . letters and aphorisms by Friedrich Froebel . the historical writing of James Anthony Froude . the science writing of Francis Galton . poetry and prose by Thophile Gautier . and much, much more.

This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Library of the World's Best Literature, Ancient and Modern, Vol. 18 of 46 It is the story as old as the custom of marriage, - the story of the husband, the wife, and the lover; but bathed in a misty, moon shiny light, and completely neglecting the usual sources of emotion. The wife, with the charming Child of her guilt, has stood under the stern inquisitorial law in the public pillory of the adulteress; while the lover, a saintly young minister, undetected and unbetrayed, has in an anguish of pusillanimity suffered her to pay the whole fine. The husband, an ancient scholar, a man of abstruse and profane learning, finds his revenge years after the wrong, in making himself insidiously the intimate of the young minister, and feeding secretly on the remorse, the inward torments, which he does everything to quicken but pretends to have no ground for suspecting. The march of the drama lies almost wholly in the malignant pressure exercised in this manner by Chillingworth upon Dimmesdale; an in uence that at last reaches its climax in the extraordinary penance of the sub ject, who in the darkness, in the sleeping town, mounts, himself, upon the scaffold on which, years before, the partner of his guilt has undergone irrevocable anguish. In this situation he calls to him Hester Prynne and her child, who, belated in the course of the merci ful ministrations to which Hester has now given herself up, pass, among the shadows, within sight of him; and they in response to his appeal ascend for a second time to the place of atonement, and stand there with him under cover of night. The scene is not com plete, of course, till Chillingworth arrives to enjoy the spectacle and his triumph. It has inevitably gained great praise, and no page of Hawthorne's shows more intensity of imagination; yet the main achievement of the book is not what is principally its subject, - the picture of the relation of the two men. They are too faintly - the husband in particular - though so fancifully figured. 'the Scarlet Letter' lives, in spite of too many cold concettz', - Hawthorne's general danger, - by something noble and truthful in the image of the branded mother and the beautiful child. Strangely enough, this pair are almost wholly outside the action; yet they preserve and vivify the work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Masterpieces of the World s Literature Ancient and Modern Vol 1

Download or read book Masterpieces of the World s Literature Ancient and Modern Vol 1 written by Harry Thurston Peck and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masterpieces of the World's Literature, Ancient and Modern, Vol. 1: The Great Authors of the World With Their Master Productions From the time when men first created literature, they began, and they have continued ever since, the collection and preservation of its records. Before the days of writing even, and when literature existed only in the most primitive forms of verse and prose, - in ballads and liturgic chants on the one hand, and in apologues, fables, and folk-tales on the other, - each generation transmitted to the next these simple efforts of untaught genius, and they transmitted them through those who memorized them and in turn taught them to their successors. It was in this way that some of the greatest epics of the world have been preserved to us; and it is evidence of the high esteem in which collected literature was held even in the days when civilization was only dawning, that the persons of these reciters and transmitters of verse and prose were almost universally held to be sacred. After writing had been invented, but before printing was known, and in the days when the permanent preservation of literary material was possible only by inscribing it upon stone and brick, extraordinary care was taken to secure its permanency. Modern excavations on the sites of oriental cities in Assyria and Babylonia have brought to light whole libraries of books inscribed and burnt into bricks, or carved upon the imperishable rock. Still later, the same spirit was evinced in the formation of those famous libraries at Alexandria, and Pergamus, and Rome, wherein was stored, and catalogued, and classified, what was memorable in the recorded thought of classical antiquity. Along the Sides of the graveled paths small rivulets run frightened. There is no song of birds in all the air. Only the young Short grass uprears itself, and, drinking in with eager greediness the welcome but angry shower, refuses to bend its neck beneath the yoke. Download or read book Masterpieces of the World s Literature Ancient and Modern Vol 6 written by Harry Thurston Peck and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masterpieces of the World's Literature, Ancient and Modern, Vol. 6: The Great Authors of the World With Their Master Productions Claudius, Matthias, a German poet; born at Reinfield, in Hoistein, August 15, 1740; died in Hamburg, January 21, 1815.He studied at Jena, and afterward at Wandsbeck, near Altona, where, under the name of Asmus, he published a weekly periodical called "Der Wandsbecker Bote." He belongs to the romantic school of German literature. He formed a strong attachment for the town of Wandsbeck, and refused to accept any appointment which required him to settle elsewhere. He gave to the world, through "Der Wandsbecker Bote," a large number of prose essays and poems, written in very pure and simple German. His style appealed strongly to the popular taste, and some of his poems have become genuine folk songs. In some of them is a vein of broad humor approaching burlesque, while others are full of solemn sentiment and quiet meditation. His later works are graver, through the influence, perhaps, of Klopstock, of whom he was a great admirer. He became a strict pietist, and allowed only the soberest side of his character to show in his work. Instead of stirring the German heart with a "Rheinweinlied, as had been his earlier wont, he translated the works of Saint Martin and Fenelon for their thought and discipline. He was appointed Comptroller of the bank of Altona in 1778. He published a collection of his works under the title "Asmus Omnia Sua Secum Portans, oder Sammtliche Werke des Wandsbecker Boten." His biography has been written by Herbst. Philosophy At Jena. (From "Der Wandsbecker Bote;" translated by W. Fleming Stevenson.) I have been at the University, and studied: well, I didn't study, but I was at the University, and I know all about it. I was acquainted with some students, and they were the whole University to me. The students sat together on benches, as if they were at church; and by the window there was a stool, and there sat the professor, and delivered about this thing and the other all kinds of addresses, and they called that teaching. The wretches who have thus offended with impunity are before thee; make haste, therefore, to secure our honor, and let thy arrows pierce them to the heart: go down with me to that island, and I will speak to Calypso.
