This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catechism, or Christian Doctrine, by Way of Question and Answer: Drawn Chiefly From the Express Word of God, and Other Pure Sources While the presses of Louvain, Rome, and Paris, were thus contributing to perpetuate our lan uagc and instruct our people, the persecuted Cat olics of Ireland had not at home a letter of Irish type within their reach, even if they could dare to use it. As soon as the first dawn of liberty appeared, they began to print their Irish books, as the best they could, in English characters. The earliest, perhaps, of these was Seventeen Irish Sermons, Dublin, 1735, by Dr. James Gallagher, then Bishop of Raphoe. Book What Did Luther Teach

Download or read book What Did Luther Teach written by Martin Luther and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Did Luther Teach?: Contents: Luther's Shorter Catechism, With Preface It has been wittily and truly remarked that one half the world knows not how the other half lives. It might be added, with equal truth, that one half the world knows not what the other half believes; added even of Christians who profess to look for one common salvation by One Faith in their One Lord. If ever we are to judge one another fairly, if ever our miserable differences are to be dissipated and Christians cease to bite and devour one another, this ignorance, unfairness, and coldness must be exchanged for interest, candour, and enquiry. And if there be any religious creed in which we English are, as a nation, bound to take an interest, it is that which is held by the many millions of Germans who more or less - theoretically at any rate - follow Luther; who speak his language, read his Bible, teach his catechisms, and use his ritual. Protestants they are, and Protestant he was. Yet how many English Protestants know what doctrines he taught, or what ritual he arranged? How many English Protestants know what the inside of a Lutheran Church is like? - in what manner the service is conducted? - or in what respects Lutheran Protestantism resembles, or differs from, English Nonconformity? And how many English Churchmen know, in their efforts to return to the first principles of the Reformation, how much, or how little, Luther retained of that which they so eagerly long after in Catholic faith and practice? These pages are offered to the public in the hope of casting a few gleams of light on this interesting and neglected subject. The Libri Symbolici Ecclesiae Evangelicae from which the translation is literally made is a book of authority, and contains other longer and more important matters, such as the Confession of Augsburg with Melancthon's Apology, the Articles of Smalcald, Luther's Longer Catechism, and the Form of Concord. It is much to be wished that all these were more accessible to the English reader. Yet this little publication may possibly awaken an interest in the faith and worship of those many millions who, out of the great families of nations, are nearest to ourselves. Book Unitarian Catechism Classic Reprint

Download or read book Unitarian Catechism Classic Reprint written by Minot Judson Savage and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-14 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Unitarian Catechism The preface by Mr. Savage gives the reasons, clearly and concisely, why a book like this is needed. It answers a great demand, and it will supply a serious deficiency. Having had the privilege of reading the contents very thoroughly, I gladly record my satisfaction in the character of the work, my hope of its Wide acceptance and use, my appreciation of the author's motives in preparing it. The questions and answers allow Of supplementing, of individual handling, Of personal direction. It is not a hard-and-fast production. There is a large liberty of detail, explanation and unfolding. The doctrinal positions are in accord with rational religion and liberal Christianity, the critical judg ments are based on modern scholarship, and the great aim throughout is to assist an inquirer or pupil to a positive, permanent faith. If any one finds comments and criticisms which at first sight seem needless, let it be remembered that a Unitarian catechism must give reasons, point out errors, and trace causes: it cannot simply dogmatize. I am Sure that in the true use Of this book great gains will come to our Sunday-schools, to searchers after truth, to our cause. Download or read book A Catechism for Children written by Robert Aspland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Catechism for Children: Designed to Teach the First Principles of the Christian Religion, and the Plain and Great Moral Duties The necessity of brevity has been all along felt, and the Compiler has restrained himself from the introduction of every thing which did not appear essential to his design. He has put within brackets passages which the younger learners may pass over, and by the omission of which the Catechism may be much shortened. The Scripture References, which are inclosed in the same manner, are inserted for the sake of the elder scholars. The use of them may lead children to the desirable habit of consulting the Scriptures for themselves. Let it be suggested that where the Cate chism is not committed to memory, or not entirely, it may be found useful to form classes of scholars for reading it, the Teachers taking the Questions and the Scholars the Answers, including the Scripture References, which they should read in full from the Bible. Book A Catechism of Liberal Faith Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Catechism of Liberal Faith Classic Reprint written by Charles Fletcher Dole and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Catechism of Liberal Faith The wish here is to show that man belongs to an unseen uni verse; that this universe is divine and beneficent; that a certain distinct and noble type of thought, feeling, and conduct, is in accord with such a universe, and that the highest and largest life grows out of the realization of these facts. In all this, while there is much that may seem new, there is nothing sectarian. On the contrary, the views here presented are coming to con trol all liberal minds of whatever name. They are intended to furnish a key to the understanding of what all genuine men of different forms of faith have believed in common. There has therefore been very little need of dealing in negations or destruc tive criticism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
