Is there any difference in the messages each of these alternative forms sends? If there isn't, why bother to keep both? On the other hand, is there any semantic similarity between eat the apple up and break the glass to pieces? This study takes a fresh look at a still controversial issue of phrasal verbs and their alternate word order applying sign-oriented theory and methodology. Unlike other analyses, it asserts that there is a semantic distinction between the two word order variants phrasal verbs may appear in. In order to test this distinction, the author analyzes a large corpus of data and also uses translation into a language having a clear morphological distinction between resultative/non-resultative forms (Russian). As follows from the analysis, English has morphological and syntactic tools to express resultative meaning, which allows suggesting a new lexico-grammatical category resultativeness.

They are also known as “verb-particle combinations”, “phrasal verbs”, “particle verbs” (PVs) or “separable (complex) verbs” (cf. Dehé ibid., cf. Dehé, Jackendoff, McIntyre, Urban 2002:1). VPCs formally consist of “a verbal stem and an intransitive prepositional or adverbial element”, a so-called particle (Olsen 2000:149). In linguistic research, “there is no uncontroversial definition of particles which reliably demarcates them from similar items and has cross-linguistic validity” (Dehé et al. 2002:3) [...] According to Dehé (2002), “the perhaps most striking property of transitive PV’s in English is their appearance in two alternating orders“ (3) as the English particle “can appear on either side of a direct object, unless it is a (non-contrastively accented) pronoun” (Dehé et al. 2002:2, cf. Jackendoff ibid.). In the so-called continuous order the particle is “adjacent to the verb and precedes the DP-complement” as in (1) (Dehé 2002:3-4). In the discontinuous order “the particle follows the DP-object” (cf. 2) (ibid.). In this order the use of unstressed pronouns is obligatory as illustrated in (3) (ibid.; the following examples are borrowed from Dehé:ibid. as well). (1) He wiped off the table. (2) He wiped the table off. (3) a. He wiped it off. b. *He wiped off it. Concerning the syntactic structure of English VPCs, several questions might be asked: 1. How does the syntactic structure of VPCs in English look like? 2. How do the alternating word orders come about? 3. Which of the word orders is the underlying one? Linguists have developed many different approaches to the syntactic structure of VPCs. This paper is going to focus attention on three different syntactic analyses for English VPCs and attempts to answer the questions posed above. Before presenting the different approaches, some basic characteristics of English VPCs will be introduced. Afterwards, the approaches, namely the Small Clause analysis according to Kayne (1985) and two different complex head analyses by Johnson (1991) and Dehé (2002), will be elucidated and discussed.

All English prepositions originally coded spatial relations between two physical entities; while retaining their original meaning, prepositions have also developed a rich set of non-spatial meanings. In this study, Tyler and Evans argue that all these meanings are systematically grounded in the nature of human spatio-physical experience. The original 'spatial scenes' provide the foundation for the extension of meaning from the spatial to the more abstract. This analysis articulates an alternative methodology that distinguishes between a conventional meaning and an interpretation produced for understanding the preposition in context, as well as establishing which of several competing senses should be taken as the primary sense. Together, the methodology and framework are sufficiently articulated to generate testable predictions and allow the analysis to be applied to additional prepositions.

She demonstrates that the syntactic patterns associated with simple sentences are imbued with meaning—that the constructions themselves carry meaning independently of the words in a sentence. Goldberg provides a comprehensive account of the relation between verbs and constructions, offering ways to relate verb and constructional meaning, and to capture relations among constructions and generalizations over constructions. Prototypes, frame semantics, and metaphor are shown to play crucial roles. In addition, Goldberg presents specific analyses of several constructions, including the ditransitive and the resultative constructions, revealing systematic semantic generalizations. The immensity of the task is underscored by the realisation that it is not only single words but also numerous standardised phrases (idioms, collocations, etc.) that need to be acquired. There is thus a clear need for instructional methods that help learners tackle this task, and yet few proposals for vocabulary instruction have so far gone beyond techniques for rote-learning and familiar means of promoting of noticing. The reason for this is that vocabulary and phraseology have long been assumed arbitrary. The volumeoffers a long-overdue alternative by exploring and exploiting the presence of linguistic 'motivation' - or, systematic non-arbitrariness - in the lexicon. The first half of the volume reports ample empirical evidence of the pedagogical effectiveness of presenting vocabulary to learners as non-arbitrary. The data reported indicate that the proposed instructional methods can benefit when both the nature of the target lexis and the basic cognitive orientations of particular learners are taken into account. The first half of the book mostly targets lexis that has already attracted a fair amount of attention from Cognitive Linguists in the past (e.g. phrasal verbs and figurative idioms). The second half broadens the scope considerably by revealing the non-arbitrariness of diverse other lexical patterns, including collocations and word partnerships generally. This is achieved by recognising some long-neglected dimensions of linguistic motivation - etymological and phonological motivation, in particular. Concrete suggestions are made for putting the non-arbitrary nature of words and phrases to good use in instructed language learning. The volumeis therefore of interest not only to applied linguists and researchers in Second Language Acquisition/Foreign Language Teaching, but also to second and foreign language teaching professionals.

Book excerpt: Traditional semantic description of Ancient Greek prepositions has struggled to synthesize the varied and seemingly arbitrary uses into something other than a disparate, sometimes overlapping list of senses. The Cognitive Linguistic approach of prototype theory holds that the meanings of a preposition are better explained as a semantic network of related senses that radially extend from a primary, spatial sense. These radial extensions arise from contextual factors that affect the metaphorical representation of the spatial scene that is profiled. Building upon the Cognitive Linguistic descriptions of Bortone (2009) and Luraghi (2009), linguists, biblical scholars, and Greek lexicographers apply these developments to offer more in-depth descriptions of select postclassical Greek prepositions and consider the exegetical and lexicographical implications of these findings. This volume will be of interest to those studying or researching the Greek of the New Testament seeking more linguistically-informed description of prepositional semantics, particularly with a focus on the exegetical implications of choice among seemingly similar prepositions in Greek and the challenges of potentially mismatched translation into English.
