Book excerpt: The author is a retired Circuit Judge. He was born in 1932, was confirmed in 1950 and has been a communicant member of the Church of England since then. He began, as a layman, officiating at services in his Parish Church, St Michael's Betchworth in rural Surrey, in 1982 and has done so, and preached there and elsewhere, since that year. As a lawyer, he is used to asking questions, both of himself and of others - and, in his sermons, he often asks the difficult ones and tries to find answers for them. His listeners' most frequent comment after the service has been that he has truly given them something to think about, though he has often been warmly thanked and asked for copies of what he has said. Some of those, who have heard him regularly, have recently asked him to publish some of his sermons, so that they can read them again - and this book, which is written for them and for his grandchildren, is the result of that request. It was only when he had assembled the material for the book and read through it, that he realised that, in speaking as he had, he had truly set out what he believes to be the Christian Faith as it has been revealed to him.. This is why the book is called A Layman's Faith. It is his hope that those, who read the material in this book, will be encouraged and strengthened in their faith and the better enabled to answer, in their own hearts, the difficult questions about conduct and belief which our present times ask of us all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Layman's Religion He may supplement the spiritual dynamic of the preacher most effectively with his practical training and business experience. Too often the layman leaves all of the spiritual activities of the Church to the preacher. Is it not time to go back to first principles and to recognize the layman as a spiritual unit for whose express benefit the Church is organized? For the layman too is an individual and sustains an independent relation to the universe. He is a part of the great scheme of God; he looks out with infinite interest at the life he is living; he yearns for the spiritual consolations, if there be any, which religion has to offer. The layman, if he be intelligent, must have a philosophy of life, and if he be serious, a religion in which he anchors his faith. These chapters are not intended as complete discussions of the various topics, but as cross-sections of the reactions of a layman to religious problems. The widening interest of our thoughtful and sincere laymen in religious activities should be heartily welcomed by all who desire to see the Church grow in scope and influence. To assist in interpreting this modern lay movement in our churches, and to encourage it so far as possible, is the purpose of this book. Book The Religion of a Layman

Download or read book The Religion of a Layman written by Charles R. Brown and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religion of a Layman This is not a commentary - it is an interpretation of the Sermon on the Mount. I have turned quite away from all technical, critical questions of exegesis to indicate, if I might in terse and modern phrase, the main content and bearing of the more vital portions of this well-known and widely quoted passage of scripture. My indebtedness to that excellent treatise on "The Sermon on the Mount" by Bishop Gore will be manifest to anyone who reads both books. We cannot make too plain the fact that religion is not primarily a system of beliefs to be cherished - it utilizes beliefs but they are altogether secondary. Religion is not a set of forms to be observed - it utilizes forms but they too are secondary. Religion is not a tremendous emotional upheaval through which a man may pass on his way to glory - it may utilize this as a line of approach or as a point of departure but such an experience is altogether incidental. Religion is a life to be lived seven days in the week in all those relationships which make up human existence. The man who is striving with all the grace God gives him to live the life of obedient trust and of unselfish action is religious and no other sort of man can be. Book excerpt: Trapped in complicated Christianity? Here's permission to come out of confinement! How did so many people wind up trapped by complicated systems of performance-based faith? Why do we push ourselves past our limits in pursuit of more works than any reasonable Pharisee would have demanded? Must we run at a pace somewhere between maddening and insane to prove we're among the faithful? "No!" is the emphatic answer from best-selling author Chuck Swindoll. In Simple Faith, he shows us how to get free from such arbitrary confinement. He reminds Christians that they serve a God who promised freedom, peace, and rest. And it's everlasting---not exhausting---life, remember? Here at last is an exhilarating invitation to simple faith. Move beyond rat-race Christianity and break the bars calculated to wilt free spirits. A cage is no place for a Christian. Welcome to your wings!
