Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Notebook of Elementary Botany The following course of elementary botany has been designed in order to give the student a general idea of the principles of the science, rather than a comprehensive survey of the whole vegetable kingdom. In a short course of this nature it is impossible to include examples of every group, and therefore those types have been selected with which it is most important that the student should become acquainted. Book Laboratory Practice for Beginners in Botany Classic Reprint

Download or read book Laboratory Practice for Beginners in Botany Classic Reprint written by William A. Setchell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Practice for Beginners in Botany In order to make the study of botany more effective under the first head, it seems best to bring the student into imme diate contact with the object itself, in the laboratory; and not only that, but to avoid interposing apparatus, as far as possible, between the student and the object to be studied. For this purpose, the writer has practically confined his attention to the larger plants. Desiring also to cultivate, as far as possible, the ability to draw correct inferences from exact observations, the writer has deemed it best to consider the subject from a somewhat different point of view from that usually adopted, and has attempted to make the morphological study bear fruit in this direction. The great difficulty in most laboratory work is to make the students realize the significance of the morphological details. They may observe accurately and record their observations carefully, but what of that? The physiological significance is overlooked - even in many cases where experiments are used to illustrate physiological phenomena. That the plant is a living thing, is a fact that must be borne actively in mind, both by teacher and by student. The plant must obtain the materials for its support, and to do this it must compete with other plants; it must protect itself against or seek the aid of animals it must obtain the energy and materials to reproduce its kind, and endeavor to place its offspring where they may have a proper chance for development; and, destitute of a mind as it is, it exercises an ingenuity, so to speak, that is of no mean order. We must, then, think of the plant as a living, working, struggling being with a single object in life, viz. To reproduce its kind and every variation in structure, be it great or little, is to be examined to determine, if possible, its use or history. Book A Laboratory Manual of High School Botany Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Laboratory Manual of High School Botany Classic Reprint written by Frederic Edward Clements and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of High School Botany The present work is intended solely as a laboratory guide in connection with lectures or a text-book. The matter has, in consequence, been presented in the briefest and most compact form consistent with this purpose. The aim is to put the student to work quickly and to keep him at work intelligently. Ex planation has been added only when it seemed essen tial to the proper handling of the laboratory work. The material and the teacher have been regarded as the two important facts in the work. The laboratory directions, it is hoped, will bring the student into direct contact with the material, and will relieve the teacher of a large amount of drudgery, thus giving him time for real teaching. Book Laboratory and Field Manual of Botany Classic Reprint

Download or read book Laboratory and Field Manual of Botany Classic Reprint written by Joseph Y. Bergen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory and Field Manual of Botany The authors fully recognize the fact that no set Of directions of only moderate fullness can tell the student all that he needs to know about choice Of material, apparatus, and manipulation. It is assumed that much is left to be explained by the instructor, and constant mention is made Of general and special laboratory guides which may be consulted for needed details. The student in the laboratory is not to consider himself as merely the corroborator Of facts already ascertained; he is to interrogate mainly not the instructor, not the manual, but the plant itself. The directions here given are, therefore, for the most part suggestions on methods Of procedure and indications as to the plants or parts Of plants in which to look for desired information. Book A Laboratory Manual in Practical Botany Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Laboratory Manual in Practical Botany Classic Reprint written by Charles Herbert Clark and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-05 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual in Practical Botany Tm; course of botanical study here outlined is intended to give the student a general view of the subject and at the same time to lay a foundation upon which more advanced studies may be built. The outline of classification is to serve as a chart in the practical work in the laboratory. The book is a laboratory manual. The stu dent's first work should be with the practical studies, and these are not necessarily to be taken up in the order in which they occur in the classification. To the writer it seems a good plan to use so much of the classification, morphology, and physiology as are given in these pages as the starting point; to ask the student to read as many of the references given in connection with the various subjects as time per mits, and to require him to embody the results of his reading and practical work in well-considered essays. So pursued, the study of botany provides the means of developing habits of close and accurate observation, of cultivating the reasoning powers, and of teaching the pupil to use clear and correct English, that can scarcely be claimed for any other subject pursued in the schools. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Guide for General Botany This laboratory guide is intended for the use of students in their first course in universities and colleges, or other institutions doing work of similar grade. It is not a teacher's manual, and therefore does not include information as to laboratory equipment, the purchase and care of apparatus and materials, nor references to the literature. The author believes that botanical instruc tion in America has now reached a stage where such directions to university instructors are no longer necessary nor appropriate. Book Introduction to Botany Classic Reprint

Download or read book Introduction to Botany Classic Reprint written by William Chase Stevens and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Botany Enough work has been outlined in this book for a year's course in those schools that are prepared, by suitable time allotted to the subject and by laboratory equipment, to do comprehensive and thorough work. A term could be devoted to the work outlined in Chapters I to X inclusive; and where the daily laboratory periods are one hour or less, the entire school year could be profitably occupied by the course there outlined. It is, of course, presumed that the teacher will select from the book such work as the possibilities of his school warrant. It is not expected that each student will perform all of the physiological experiments herein outlined; but different experiments are to be assigned to individuals or groups of students, the results to be used for purpose of demonstration before the entire class. Much stress is laid on laboratory work, which is to be done with the utmost possible care and accuracy, not only that the student may respect his work and that the knowledge gained may be exact, but also that the fine opportunity which the study of plants so richly affords for training in seeing and interpreting facts, may not be passed by. Book A Laboratory Manual of Botany

Download or read book A Laboratory Manual of Botany written by Otis W. Caldwell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Botany: Outlines and Directions for Laboratory and Field-Work in Botany in Secondary Schools This manual has been prepared in harmony with these convictions. In all his directions the author has aimed to make the study of botany full of meaning, of pleasure, and of profit to the young people who are to study the subject; to lead them to observe constantly and accurately; to form well-founded judgments from their observations; to inspire them with an intelligent and abiding love for nature; and to have them see and appreciate the ways in which the lives of plants are allied to their own lives. The manual is divided into two parts: Part I considers plants from the view-point of their physiology and ecology, while Part II considers their structure and evolution as they have developed with reference to the problems of nutri tion and reproduction. Either part may be used as the basis of a course in botany. When both parts are used, covering a year's course, the second may precede the first, if this order seems preferable. In either case Chapter I is essential as an introduction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
