Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual: Containing Directions for a Course of Experiments in General Chemistry, Systematically Arranged to Accompany the Author's "Elements of Chemistry" Messrs. Eimer St Amend, Nos. 205 to 211 Third Avenue, New York, whom the publishers take the responsibility of recommending as thoroughly reliable, will furnish each of the following articles at the price given. If several pieces of the apparatus in List No. 1 are taken, a discount of 10 per cent will be made; on a complete set20 per cent discount will be allowed; on three or more sets, 25 per cent. A discount of 10 per cent will be given on a complete set of the chemicals, and of 15 per cent on three or more sets. For a class of 12 three or four times the amount of ap paratus included in List No. 1 could be made to answer, particularly if the pupils are not all required to do the same thing at the same time. As there is, however, always more or less breakage of glass and porcelain-ware, it is well to have extra pieces of all such apparatus on hand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual Containing Directions for a Course of Experiments in General Chemistry On comparing the experiments described in this Manual with those described in my Elements of Chemistry it will be found that some of the more difficult ones have been omitted here. As many as possible of those omitted should be performed by the teacher in the presence of the class; and the points of importance should be drawn out by questions put to the members of the class. Afterwards the pupils should write a full account of what they have seen, and draw such conclusions as the experiments may lead to. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Manual: Containing Directions for a Course of Experiments in Organic Chemistry, Systematically Arranged to Accompany Remsen's Organic Chemistry AT the author's request I have carefully examined this Manual; and, as a result, I have recommended its publication, in the belief that it will be a valuable adjunct to my Introduction to the Study of the Compounds of Carbon. Great care has evidently been taken to determine the best conditions for each experiment; and, in many cases, the directions given are undoubtedly better than those given in my book. This is largely due to the fact that the author has, for a number of years, had charge of the work of preparation of compounds of carbon in a large labora tory; and he has therefore had an excellent oppor tunity thoroughly to test difierent methods, opportunity which he has well utilized. Book A Laboratory Manual of Medical Chemistry

Download or read book A Laboratory Manual of Medical Chemistry written by Ira Carleton Chase and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-20 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Medical Chemistry: Containing a Systematic Course of Experiments This volume is 'the outgrowth of several years of lab oratory instruction given medical students. The exe/rcises have been used in various forms by seven classes since the organization of the Medical Department. They have been gradually shaped by the peculiar needs of students of medi cine, and by personal visitation and careful study of the laboratories and methods of instruction in nearly all of the leading medical schools of the United States during the years 1893 - 6. Since there is not known to the author a small volume of modern, progressive laboratory exercises, covering the various branches of medical chemistry here presented, it has been decided to put these exercises into permanent form for the use of our own students. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Manual: Containing Directions for a Course of Experiments in Organic Chemistry, Systematically Arranged to Accompany Remsen's Organic Chemistry, Revision of 1992 From time to time the student will be called into the Office of the instructor for an informal oral quiz' cover ing the work finished. Questions will be asked on the laboratory procedure and on the theoretical part of the work. An attempt is made in these quizzes to make clear parts of the theoretical work that the student has confused or misunderstood and to find out if he knows what he has been doing. Samples of the compounds made are saved and are shown to the instructor at the quizzes. These should be put in small homeopathic vials, labeled with the name of the substance, boiling point or melting point, date of preparation and name of the student. Book Laboratory Experiments in General Chemistry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Laboratory Experiments in General Chemistry Classic Reprint written by Henry Briggs North and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Experiments in General Chemistry This manual is designed to cover a laboratory course in General Chemistry given in connection with a series of experimental lectures. It contains five hundred care fully chosen experiments on the more common elements and is so arranged that it can be used in connection with any good text-book. The work includes a large number of experiments similar to those found in other manuals and, in addition, numerous more advanced experiments which, to the author's knowledge, have never before appeared in a laboratory manual in General Chemistry. It is not supposed that any one student will perform all of these experiments. The reason for the large. Number is rather that experiments may be chosen to meet the needs of the various classes of students. In the author's laboratory an assignment of experiments for each laboratory period is posted on the bulletin board. A number of the simpler experiments are selected for the beginners while the more advanced and consequently more difficult exercises are assigned to those who have had previous chemical training. In order to better facilitate this method of assignment, all experiments have been numbered consecutively. Download or read book General Chemistry Laboratory Manual Classic Reprint written by John Charles Blake and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Chemistry Laboratory Manual The exercises in this manual are complementary to the author's General Chemistry, Theoretical and Ap plied. The numbering of the chapters and sections follows that of the textbook exactly, as it is expected that students will study both simultaneously. In fact, the exercises can often advantageously precede the corresponding lectures; although in such cases the instructor will find it necessary to give more extended oral instructions at the beginning of the laboratory period than would otherwise be required. Such pre liminary instructions must be given in any event dur ing the early part of the course in order to familiarize the student with the ordinary pieces of apparatus and their manipulation, the regulations and routine of the laboratories and storerooms, and the prescribed system of recording results and submitting them to the in structor for inspection and approval. Oral and written quizzes based on the laboratory work, but involving knowledge of both the laboratory work and the lee tures, will be found helpful.
