  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

Download or read book Physics of Meteoric Phenomena written by V.A. Bronshten and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Meteoric phenomena" is the accepted term for the complex of physi cal phenomena that accompany the entry of meteoric bodies into the at mosphere of the earth (or of any planet). "Meteoric bodies" are usually defined as cosmic bodies observed by optical or radar techniques, when they enter the atmosphere. The limiting sensitivity of present-day radar equipment makes it possible to record meteors of up to stellar magnitude +14, while the most brilliant bolides may reach magnitude -19. On a mass 7 7 scale this corresponds approximately to a range of 10- to 10 g. How ever, met~or astronomy is also concerned with larger objects, namely crater-forming meteorites, or objects that cause large-scale destruction when they arrive through the atmosphere (an example is the Tunguska River meteorite). Consideration of the interaction of such objects with 12 the terrestrial atmosphere extends the mass range to 10 g. On the other hand, scientists studying fragmentation processes in meteoric bod 7 ies have to consider particles with masses less than 10- g, and the use of data from meteoric-particle counters on rockets and artificial satel lites, from microcraters on the lunar surface, and from noctilucent clouds 12 lowers the minimum mass to 10- g. Therefore, the mass range of meteoric bodies, or meteoroids, encompasses 24 orders of magnitude. Although recent years have witnessed considerable development in meteor research, both in the Soviet Union and elsewhere, the main mono graphs on meteor physics were published twenty or more years ago.

Book The Physics of Meteor Entry

Download or read book The Physics of Meteor Entry written by Mary F. Romig and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey is made of recent papers on the physics of meteor entry. The various regimes of luminous flight are defined, and present techniques for obtaining the mass and density of meteoroids are critically discussed. The effect of the assumed mode of heat transfer on the mass loss is shown for two recent fireballs. A relatively simple method for estimating original mass and velocity is presented. It is evident from this paper that many questions remain to be answered, particularly those concerning radiation from the gas and ablated material, before the entry of objects larger than those which produce telescopic meteors can be successfully analyzed. Book Principles of Meteoritics

Download or read book Principles of Meteoritics written by E.L. Krinov and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of Meteoritics examines the significance of meteorites in relation to cosmogony and to the origin of the planetary system. The book discusses the science of meteoritics and the sources of meteorites. Scientists study the morphology of meteorites to determine their motion in the atmosphere. The scope of such study includes all forms of meteorites, the circumstances of their fall to earth, their motion in the atmosphere, and their orbits in space. Meteoric bodies vary in sizes; in calculating their motion in interplanetary space, astronomers apply the laws of Kepler. In the region of retardation, the direction of motion of the meteoric body changes, and a break in the visible and real trajectories follows. The angle of fall of meteorites at a vertical line on the surface of the Earth measures between 20 degrees to 30 degrees. The text also discusses the Tunguska and Sikhote-alin meteorites, two gigantic meteorites that fell in the U.S.S.R. The text also discusses the chemistry, the mineralogy, the petrography, and the physical properties of meteorites. The book is suitable for astronomers, geologists, and general readers who have an interest in sky watching.

  • Pages : 406 pages

Download or read book Physics of Comets written by K. S. Krishna Swamy and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of Comet Halley in 1986 was a tremendous success for cometary science. In March of that year, six spacecrafts passed through Comet Halley as close as 600 km from the nucleus and made the in situ measurements of various kinds. These space missions to Comet Halley and that of the ICE spacecraft to Comet Giacobini-Zinner combined with studies, both ground-based and above the atmosphere, have increased our knowledge of cometary science in a dramatic way. This new edition of Physics of Comets incorporates these new and exciting findings. The emphasis of the book is on the physical processes operating in a cometary environment. It discusses up-to-date observations, methods and results based on the study of various comets. The subject is developed in a systematic manner covering various aspects of cometary phenomena. This book may serve as a text book for students, and as reference material for researchers.
