Shakely introduces us to a right-wing conservative politician and weaves him, and his rebellious daughter, into and through the story in a way that makes the reader wonder if this were the 1960's or today. As the story moves into Costa Rica and the upheaval of the 60's in Central America, the reader is given a quick primer on how so many of the pieces of the puzzle fit together Castro, Cuba, Nicaragua, poverty, revolution and how those forces are still at work today. The pure excitement of Kennedy and the creation of the Peace Corps and why it was so widely embraced has never been better explained. Whether this is auto-biographical or pure fiction, we are all better for the quality of writing that Shakely shares with us. You will be rewarded by reading it. In the hospital room where Blanca lays in a coma, the Devil takes Elan Guevara into an incredible journey introducing Elan to the divine seat of a government/university world called, "Ordanturlis" where a hierarchy of Jin Potentas (Angels) and God reside. An elusive framework called the "Orda" is also introduced hence, "Why things are the way they are today. The Devil's Hummingbird: An Interview with the Devil is a fiction 58,000 word count novel that combines elements of divine mystery, political intrigue, spirituality and speculative romance. Here's the opportunity to fancy the Devil's side of the story over how and why all was created. The accompanying pre-quell novel entitled, "Chronicles of the Jin Revolution" is complete. The author is currently working on a third installment of this new divine series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: White, heterosexual, middle-class men have long served as the standard for masculine “beauty,” even if such men have refused to embrace this term. This study seeks to denaturalize this standard by exploring the connections between beauty and the broad spectrum of masculinities. The chapters included in Hunks, Hotties, and Pretty Boys contribute primarily to the field of gender studies, specifically masculinity studies. They consider twentieth-century representations of male beauty through a variety of mediums: performance, literature, art, photography, film and television. Although the contributors hail from both the humanities and the social sciences, all share a concern for how beauty informs, shapes, defines, and re-defines our understanding of masculinity itself. These scholars investigate a range of historical periods and draw from a broad scope of critical approaches. Some interrogate male beauty through the female gaze and look to the influence of female performance on notions of masculine beauty. Others examine how queer and racial constructions of male beauty refuse and offer alternatives to hegemonic models of identity. Another revisits previous philosophical and theoretical conceptions of beauty, only to deconstruct gendered conceptions of the beautiful and the sublime. In all, these essays complicate masculine beauty by examining Chicano, Asian, working class, and female constructions of male beauty in Western culture.
