Book The President Who Would Not Be King

Download or read book The President Who Would Not Be King written by Michael W. McConnell and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vital perspectives for the divided Trump era on what the Constitution's framers intended when they defined the extent—and limits—of presidential power One of the most vexing questions for the framers of the Constitution was how to create a vigorous and independent executive without making him king. In today's divided public square, presidential power has never been more contested. The President Who Would Not Be King cuts through the partisan rancor to reveal what the Constitution really tells us about the powers of the president. Michael McConnell provides a comprehensive account of the drafting of presidential powers. Because the framers met behind closed doors and left no records of their deliberations, close attention must be given to their successive drafts. McConnell shows how the framers worked from a mental list of the powers of the British monarch, and consciously decided which powers to strip from the presidency to avoid tyranny. He examines each of these powers in turn, explaining how they were understood at the time of the founding, and goes on to provide a framework for evaluating separation of powers claims, distinguishing between powers that are subject to congressional control and those in which the president has full discretion. Based on the Tanner Lectures at Princeton University, The President Who Would Not Be King restores the original vision of the framers, showing how the Constitution restrains the excesses of an imperial presidency while empowering the executive to govern effectively.

Book The Invention of Power

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of Why Nations Fail, this book solves one of the great puzzles of history: Why did the West become the most powerful civilization in the world? Western exceptionalism—the idea that European civilizations are freer, wealthier, and less violent—is a widespread and powerful political idea. It has been a source of peace and prosperity in some societies, and of ethnic cleansing and havoc in others. Yet in The Invention of Power, Bruce Bueno de Mesquita draws on his expertise in political maneuvering, deal-making, and game theory to present a revolutionary new theory of Western exceptionalism: that a single, rarely discussed event in the twelfth century changed the course of European and world history. By creating a compromise between churches and nation-states that, in effect, traded money for power and power for money, the 1122 Concordat of Worms incentivized economic growth, facilitated secularization, and improved the lot of the citizenry, all of which set European countries on a course for prosperity. In the centuries since, countries that have had a similar dynamic of competition between church and state have been consistently better off than those that have not. The Invention of Power upends conventional thinking about European culture, religion, and race and presents a persuasive new vision of world history.

Book Young Anointed and Empowered

Download or read book Young Anointed and Empowered written by Marcus L. Arrington and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2011-02 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his seminal work, Young, Anointed and Empowered, Marcus L. Arrington presents an uplifting message of hope to teens and young adults worldwide. Through transparent articulation of his own journey and the journeys of well-known biblical figures, he confirms that God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things. Some of his character highlights include David, Joseph and Daniel and his three friends. Arrington's introduction begins with a brief survey of the ills that inundate the landscape of youthdom. He ends on a glorious note of triumph by assuring youths and those that care for youths that the enemies that confront them and seek to destroy them aren't indestructible. In fact, Arrington informs some and reminds others that God Almighty is a timely deliverer who makes it His business to rescue the downtrodden, bruised and oppressed. After a riveting introduction, Arrington builds momentum in Chapter 1 where he asks poignantly, "whatcha lookin for?" He again informs and reminds youths that the "it" or "thing" their searching for is found in God through Jesus Christ. After examining the faith, commitment and courage of the aforesaid biblical figures in Chapters 4-6, Arrington continues his conversation by observing purity and the need to have a clean heart before God in chapter 7. He transitions from his emphasis on purity and addresses the politics of being called by God to do a work for God. In Chapter 8 Arrington, discusses empowerment. He creatively explains the ministry, person and work of the Holy Spirit and why all believers need His direction and help. Finally, Arrington concludes his conversation with a heartfelt observation of the truth that greatness in life is preceded by the tandem of humility and obedience to God.

Book excerpt: Author Pat Munsamy preaches the power of Gods seed in an enlightening book released through Xlibris. In Empowered, readers will know who they are in Christ and what they can do through the miracle of the seed. Empowered discusses the different forms of the seed, and how they affect ones daily life. Munsamy begins by discussing that the seed is the Word, which brings conviction to engender repentance. The seed is also faith, which grows once a person hears the Word. To be empowered by the spirit of God, a person must also experience the seed anointing. As readers absorb Munsamys message in this book, they will see how everything starts with a seed. Everything we give to the Lord is our seeds. Our abilities, our time, our energies, our intellect and our money are our seeds we sow into the kingdom of God. The turnover we will get from these will be startling and incredible. The Lord will give it back to us more than a hundredfold, says the author. Material, fi nancial, spiritual, and intellectual prosperity can only be achieved from sowing seeds. Empowered shows readers how. Book Impersonal Power

Download or read book Impersonal Power written by Heide Gerstenberger and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-08-31 with total page 815 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The point of departure of Heide Gerstenberger’s path-breaking work is a critique of structural-functionalist theory of the state, in both its modernisation theory and materialist variants. Prof. Gerstenberger opposes to these a historical-theoretical explanation that proceeds from the long-term structuring effect of concrete social practice. This is elucidated by detailed investigation of the development of bourgeois state power in the two key examples of England and France. The different complexions that the bourgeois state assumed are presented as the results of processes of social and cultural formation, and thus irreducible to a simple function of capitalism. This approach culminates in the thesis that the bourgeois form of capitalist state power arose only where capitalist societies developed out of already rationalised structures of the Ancien Régime type.

Book 2nd Corinthians Empowering the Church

Download or read book 2nd Corinthians Empowering the Church written by Practical Christianity Foundation and published by Practical Christianity Foundation. This book was released on 2020-08-08 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empowering the Church In his second epistle to the Corinthian Church, the apostle Paul empowered the church by affirming that God's strength and power is revealed and works in our weakness. The apostle empowered the church with God's strength after having confronted the immorality, doctrinal confusion and frequent disputes that had become commonplace among the Corinthian believers. Paul's message to this church was simple yet powerful: Consider the values of Christ's redemption and realign your thinking with God's instructions. Although this letter was written to admonish, instruct and encourage the early church, they are just as relevant to us today. This verse-by-verse devotional study, complete with engaging commentary and practical life applications, will challenge you to pursue a closer walk with Jesus Christ and grow in the faith.
