Book A Good Man

Download or read book A Good Man written by Mark K. Shriver and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2012-06-05 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this intimate portrait of an extraordinary father-son relationship, Mark K. Shriver discovers the moral principles that guided his legendary father and applies them to his own life When Sargent "Sarge" Shriver—founder of the Peace Corps and architect of President Johnson's War on Poverty—died in 2011 after a valiant fight with Alzheimer's, thousands of tributes poured in from friends and strangers worldwide. These tributes, which extolled the daily kindness and humanity of "a good man," moved his son Mark far more than those who lauded Sarge for his big-stage, headline-making accomplishments. After a lifetime searching for the path to his father's success in the public arena, Mark instead turns to a search for the secret of his father's joy, his devotion to others, and his sense of purpose. Mark discovers notes and letters from Sarge; hears personal stories from friends and family that zero in on the three guiding principles of Sarge's life—faith, hope, and love—and recounts moments with Sarge that now take on new value and poignancy. In the process, Mark discovers much about himself, as a father, as a husband, and as a social justice advocate. A Good Man is an inspirational and deeply personal story about a son discovering the true meaning of his father's legacy.

Book Raising Boys to Be Good Men

Download or read book Raising Boys to Be Good Men written by Aaron Gouveia and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-06-16 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "If you are the parent of a boy . . . this is the book you need . . . insightful, enlightened, practical." —Peggy Orenstein, New York Times bestselling author of Boys & Sex From the dad who created the viral tweet supporting his son wearing nail polish, this essential parenting guide shares 36 parenting tips for battling gender norms, bringing down "man up" culture, and helping sons realize their potential. Our boys are in a crisis. Toxic masculinity and tough guy-ism are on display daily from our leaders, and we see anger, dysfunction, violence, and depression in young men who are suffocated by harmful social codes. Our young sons are told to stop throwing like a girl. They hear phrases like “man up” when they cry. They are told “boys will be boys” when they behave badly. The “Girl Power” movement has encouraged women to be whoever and do whatever they want, but that sentiment is not often extended to boys. Just watch the bullying when boys try ballet, paint their fingernails, or play with a doll. But we can treat this problem—and the power lies in the hands of parents. It's not only possible to raise boys who aren't emotionally stifled and shoved into stereotypical gender boxes; it's vital if we want a generation of men who can express their emotions, respect women, and help nurse society back to a halfway healthy place. We can reframe manhood. From Aaron Gouveia, who gained viral fame after tweeting his support for his son’s painted fingernails (and who knows toxic masculinity very well), learn practical and actionable tips such as: Don’t accept different standards for moms and dads Teach boys that “girl” is not an insult and retire phrases like “boys will be boys” Show boys that expressing their emotions and being physical is a good thing Let boys pursue nontraditional interests and hobbies Talk to boys about consent and privilege Model healthy and respectful relationships for boys to emulate Penned with equal parts humor, biting snark, and lived advice, Raising Boys to Be Good Men is the essential parenting guide for raising sons to realize their potential outside the box.

Book excerpt: "I sat down to read A Good Man and didn't move until I'd finished...I loved this book." —Caroline Kepnes, author of You A dark and gripping novel of psychological suspense about a family man driven to unspeakable acts, in the vein of The Perfect Nanny and We Need to Talk About Kevin. Thomas Martin was a devoted family man who had all the trappings of an enviable life: a beautiful wife and daughter, a well-appointed home on Long Island's north shore, a job at a prestigious Manhattan advertising firm. He was also a devoted son and brother, shielding the women in his orbit from the everyday brutalities of the world. But what happens when Thomas’s fragile ego is rocked? After committing a horrific deed — that he can never undo — Thomas grapples with his sense of self. Sometimes he casts himself as a victim and, at other times, a monster. Book You re a Good Man Sergeant

Download or read book You re a Good Man Sergeant written by Paul S. Porter and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-09-13 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sergeant Paul S. Porter experienced combat like few soldiers have lived to write about. Serving with the Fourth Armored Division in Company B, 53rd Armored Infantry Battalion, Porter and his light machine gun squad entered the front line of World War II on July 17, 1944, and were soon in the thick of the action. The Fourth fought through the hedgerows of Normandy before leading Patton's Third Army in its breakout and pursuit toward the German border. The slugfests that followed as the Fourth advanced through the mud and battered villages of the Alsace-Lorraine region were Porter's most difficult of the war. For his heroic actions in combat on December 4, 1944, Sergeant Porter was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. This memoir presents the full story of Porter's extraordinary service in his own candid words, illustrated with family photographs. He paints a vivid portrait of a young man coping with the unique pressures of the battlefield. His candor when describing his officers and fellow soldiers provides a sober view of the dynamics within a team when comprised of individuals with diverse backgrounds and motives. Sergeant Porter has an intense desire to survive yet possesses a resolve to enter the fray and engage in combat eye-to-eye with the enemy.

True love is all around you if earnestly you desire it. The book suggests functional approaches to true love as an alternative to the hit-and-miss approach that almost always ends in divorce or heartbreak. The book is for the married or single woman. It is for the married woman who, perhaps, already has a good man and necessarily must keep him. It is for the single woman who now is in search of a good man for a lifetime of joyful romance and companionship. The book examines the good man's qualifying attributes, the meaning of romantic love, the concrete manifestations of love and, importantly, how you recognize and sustain true love when it comes your way. Find a Good Man and Keep Him is a practical guide that leads you through and away from the hurtful tumbles and stumbles of a failed relationship onto the path of manifest love with a good man.

Book A Good Man Who Came Out of Nazareth

Download or read book A Good Man Who Came Out of Nazareth written by Ellis A. Hudgins and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2009-09 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 15 years as a sixth-grade Sunday school director, Ellis Hudgins searched bookstores and libraries for an engaging, age-appropriate book to help teach his students about the life of Jesus. He never found one, and this book is his contribution to fill that void. A Good Man Who Came out of Nazareth is based on a one-year adult study Hudgins developed and taught at his church. Several of his sixth-grade students provided valuable criticisms of the draft that are reflected in the final text. Hudgins has worked with junior high through college-age students for more than 40 years as both a Sunday school teacher and director, creating lesson programs and support materials for the teachers in his departments. His first book translates the Bible truths he assembled for adult study in language that a junior high student can read and readily understand. Hudgins taught American history for 14 years at Texas A&M and at the University of Houston, primarily in evening classes. Throughout his career he worked in various design positions in construction technology for the petrochemical industry. After leaving the teacher's desk for four years he was invited back to the University of Houston to teach engineering graphics for an additional six years. Now retired, Hudgins continues to teach Sunday school in the College and Career class of his church in Bellville, Texas. A native of Houston, Ellis is married to Betty, whom he met one summer when he formed a youth choir at his home church. They have four adult sons and six grandchildren. Hudgins earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in history and religion and a Master of Arts in history from Baylor University. He completed his Bachelor of Divinity at Southwestern Baptist Seminary and remained there for an additional year of post-graduate study
