The art in this exhibition expresses a range of emotions from anger and sadness, to our hope for positive change. All profits from the exhibition catalog goes to the Artist Circle Alliance, LLC to cover costs associated with the exhibit. Once all expenses are paid at the end of the exhibit's run, anything left over will be donated to four charities: the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union), Planned Parenthood, RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), and IRC (International Rescue Committee). Through much of history, quilts have spoken to many political causes, including the temperance movement, women's suffrage, nuclear proliferation, and AIDS awareness. Quilts have always been a means of expression for people whose political voices were silenced.Art is about communication, and the makers of these works are eager to share their viewpoints. Agree? Disagree? We invite you to join us as we examinethese issues and consider differing opinions with civilized, constructive conversation. We hope to ultimately gain a better understanding of oneanother's perspectives and to foster continued change in a positive direction.

Book excerpt: Featuring the work of sixty artists and including 300 illustrations, the catalog Southern Accent accompanies a major contemporary art exhibition that questions and explores the complex and contested space of the American South. This unprecedented exhibition investigates the many realities, fantasies, and myths of the South that have long captured the public's imagination, while presenting a wide range of perspectives that create a composite portrait of southern identity through contemporary art. It looks at the South as an open-ended question and concept in itself by encompassing a broad spectrum of media and approaches, demonstrating that southernness is more of a shared sensibility than any one definable culture or style. While the exhibition includes artwork from the 1950s to the present, it primarily focuses on the past thirty-five years. With numerous contributions by artists, scholars, musicians, and poets, a music-listening library, and a timeline of scholarship on southern art, this catalog redefines the way we look at the South in contemporary art. Southern Accent will be on display at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University from September 1, 2016 to January 8, 2017 and at the Speed Art Museum in Louisville, Kentucky, from April 29, 2017, to August 20, 2017. With a focus on gender, race (including whiteness), class, sexuality, and transnationality--all of which are often marginalized in dominant art histories--each individual has provided short, often personal contributions detailing how they become passionate about their practice. The contributors' offerings are varied and surprising, appealing equally to people enmeshed in the field through their work as well as those with a beginner's interest. Their pieces take various forms--epistolary, children's fable, interview, coauthored narrative, pastiche, memoir, manifesto, and apology--and a number of the essays perform in their structure or content the theories they explore about publishing, curating, and archival work.

Since the early 1990s, the number of photography book publishers has continued to grow while technological developments have placed more tools for bookmaking directly in the hands of photographers. For the students and working artists who have chosen photography as their primary means of expression, having their own photography book is seen as a passport to the international photography scene. Yet, few have more than a tentative grasp of the component parts of a book, an understanding of what they want to express, or the know-how needed to get a book published. Publish Your Photography Book is the first book to demystify the process of producing and publishing a book of photographs. Industry insiders Darius D. Himes and Mary Virginia Swanson survey the current landscape of photography book publishing and point out the many avenues to pursue and pitfalls to avoid. This expert guide is organized in six sections covering the rich history of the photo book; anoverview of the publishing industry; an intimate look at the process of making a book; a close review of how to market aphoto book; a section on case studies, built around discussions and interviews with published photographers; and a final section presenting a wealth of resources and information to aid in the understanding of the publishing world. • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book Devour the Land written by Makeda Best and published by Harvard Art Museums. This book was released on 2021-09-28 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the impacts of militarism on the American landscape, through the lens of art, environmental studies, and politics Devour the Land considers how contemporary photographers have responded to the US military's impact on the domestic environment since the 1970s, a dynamic period for environmental activism as well as for photography. This catalogue presents a lively range of voices at the intersection of art, environmentalism, militarism, photography, and politics. Alongside interviews with prominent contemporary artists working in the landscape photography tradition, the images speak to photographers' varied motivations, personal experiences, and artistic approaches. The result is a surprising picture of the ways violence and warfare surround us. Although most modern combat has taken place abroad, the US domestic landscape bears the footprint of armed conflict--much of the environmental damage we live with today was caused by our own military and the expansive network of industries supporting its work. Designed to evoke a field book and to nod toward ephemera produced by earlier artists and activists, the catalogue features works by dozens of photographers, including Ansel Adams, Robert Adams, Dorothy Marder, Alex Webb, Terry Evans, and many more.

Download or read book Coffee Rhum Sugar Gold written by Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) and published by Cameron. This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of the Caribbean identity through the work of 10 contemporary artists The legacy of European colonialism in the Caribbean is explored through the work of 10 contemporary artists: Angel Otero, Adler Guerrier, Phillip Thomas, Leonardo Benzant, Lucia Hierro, Lavar Munroe, Andrea Chung, Ebony Patterson, Didier William, and Firelei B ez. Their work is inspired by products that have historically been produced in and exported from the Caribbean. The book, published to accompany a traveling exhibition opening at San Francisco's Museum of the African Diaspora, explores the complexity of the "postcolonialism paradox"--in which colonizers often felt superior and productive as they claimed territory for themselves while subjugating indigenous people and exploiting their land. Whether connected to the Caribbean by birth or by choice, the artists use their work as a means of examining the relationships within the power structure.

Book Book Made of Forest

Download or read book Book Made of Forest written by Jared Stanley and published by Salt Modern Poets. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprised of lyrics, mock journal entries, prose portraits and odes, Book Made of Forest answers the "summons and challenge" of being both human and animal, urban and rural, cultured and philistine, formal and ruinous, willful and acted-upon. Jared Stanley strikes at the absurd thingness of things, rings out their histories, traces their loss in the 6th extinction, figures his voluminous overhearing into poems rhetorical and fragmented, mournful and comedic. People skulk, animals talk, trash multiplies. Contemporary California--it's art, scavengers, landscapes, weeds, pollution - effects its lyric smudges. Yet Book Made of Forest finds them all inexplicably desirous. For when the weather is found man-made, a function of our emotions, the pathetic fallacy returns, not as a symptom of undue personal imposition onto the landscape, but as the collective by-product of not having any god to blame. Without a deity, Book Made of Forest is the naked almer--"I'll wear any greeting from dirt, as if a hide"--finding its vision in the midst of things that simply happen.

Book excerpt: The oeuvre of Mel Chin (b. 1951 in Houston) encompasses a wide variety of media including sculpture, video, drawing, painting, land art, and performance art. Eschewing a trademark style, the common thread through Chin's practice is his conceptual rigor, thoughtful historicism, and concern for social justice. His land-based works such as Revival Field from the early 1990s and Operation Paydirt (2008-ongoing), garnered significant international press for presenting the science of soil remediation as an art form. Challenging the traditional concept of a retrospective as a linear presentation of a single individual's work over time, the publication celebrates the artist's practice of constant evolution, re-examination, and collaboration. The catalogue will also include an extensive illustrated chronology of his career. Exhibition: New Orleans Museum of Art, USA (21.02-25.05.2014) and further venues.
