This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Journal of Two Years' Travel in Persia Ceylon, Etc, Vol. 2 of 2 As regards the beautiful and stately remains, now commonly called the talchti jemslzeed (j em sheed's throne), clzilzl mmc'lr (forty columns) or lstakhar*, the various speculations of antiquaries have attained no conclusion, save that these are the relics of some great building, either a royal palace or a temple of religious worship, or pro bably a combination of both, which stood con spicuous in the great city of Persepolis; which city has now been swept away by the hand of time. Whether this was the palace which Alex ander the Great burnt in a drunken frolic, at the instigation of a vile courtesan, is a matter in volved in doubt Modern Persian historians assert that it was destroyed by the Moslem con querors of this country, and the assertion is probably true. The very name has been lost, for the appellation of Persepolis is evidently of Greek invention, and the other titles by which it is now known, are unquestionably modern. Book A Journal of Two Years Travel in Persia Ceylon Etc Volume II

This book was released on 2008-11 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACE. THE Author of this very practical treatise on Scotch Loch - Fishing desires clearly that it may be of use to all who had it. He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this book has afforded him pleasure in his leisure moments, and that pleasure would be much increased if he knew that the perusal of it would create any bond of sympathy between himself and the angling community in general. This section is interleaved with blank shects for the readers notes. The Author need hardly say that any suggestions addressed to the case of the publishers, will meet with consideration in a future edition. We do not pretend to write or enlarge upon a new subject. Much has been said and written-and well said and written too on the art of fishing but loch-fishing has been rather looked upon as a second-rate performance, and to dispel this idea is one of the objects for which this present treatise has been written. Far be it from us to say anything against fishing, lawfully practised in any form but many pent up in our large towns will bear us out when me say that, on the whole, a days loch-fishing is the most convenient. One great matter is, that the loch-fisher is depend- ent on nothing but enough wind to curl the water, -and on a large loch it is very seldom that a dead calm prevails all day, -and can make his arrangements for a day, weeks beforehand whereas the stream- fisher is dependent for a good take on the state of the water and however pleasant and easy it may be for one living near the banks of a good trout stream or river, it is quite another matter to arrange for a days river-fishing, if one is looking forward to a holiday at a date some weeks ahead. Providence may favour the expectant angler with a good day, and the water in order but experience has taught most of us that the good days are in the minority, and that, as is the case with our rapid running streams, -such as many of our northern streams are, -the water is either too large or too small, unless, as previously remarked, you live near at hand, and can catch it at its best. A common belief in regard to loch-fishing is, that the tyro and the experienced angler have nearly the same chance in fishing, -the one from the stern and the other from the bow of the same boat. Of all the absurd beliefs as to loch-fishing, this is one of the most absurd. Try it. Give the tyro either end of the boat he likes give him a cast of ally flies he may fancy, or even a cast similar to those which a crack may be using and if he catches one for every three the other has, he may consider himself very lucky. Of course there are lochs where the fish are not abundant, and a beginner may come across as many as an older fisher but we speak of lochs where there are fish to be caught, and where each has a fair chance. Again, it is said that the boatman has as much to do with catching trout in a loch as the angler. Well, we dont deny that. In an untried loch it is necessary to have the guidance of a good boatman but the same argument holds good as to stream-fishing...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Visit to Ceylon I then inspected, repaired, and completed the various nstruments and apparatus for examining and collecting specimens which always formed part of my paraphernalia in my voyages along the coast, and I added considerably to their number. I took advantage of the summer months to learn and practice various arts which I deemed might prove especially useful and desirable on this journey - such as oil painting, photography, the use of a gun, of nets and traps, soldering metal, etc. As the climate seemed to render it advisable that I should not start before the middle of Octo ber, I spent the autumn holidays in Jena, busied in making preparations and in packing my very considerable appa ratus. Although the special object of my journey was to be restricted within the limits of my own departments of study, more particularly animal and plant life, there were many other questions in natural history to which I might be able to render subsidiary aid, and which I must be more or less ready to investigate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eight Years Wanderings in Ceylon Nearly twenty years ago, when settled in the island of Ceylon, I wrote this book. The lapse of this interval of time has produced many important changes Ceylon has progressed, and is become one of our most prosperous colonies. My work published in 1855, closed with these words For me Ceylon has always had a charm, and I shall ever retain a vivid interest in the colony. I trust that a new and more prosperous era has now commenced, and that Ceylon, having shaken off the incubus of mismanagement, may, under the rule of a vigorous and enterprising governor, arrive at that prosperity to which she is entitled by her capabilities. Book Rough Notes of a Traveller

Download or read book Rough Notes of a Traveller written by A. W. Dobbie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rough Notes of a Traveller: Being an Account of a Trip Round the World, Via Ceylon, Arabia, Egypt, Italy, France, England, America, Sandwich Islands, Fiji, &C IT may be necessary at the commencement of this work to explain that it is the result of a pressing request on the part of the Editors of the Methodist Journal, who, on hearing of my intended trip round the World, asked me to make notes as I went along, and post them on to Adelaide for publication in the Journal. Never having attempted anything of the kind before, I naturally shrank from the task, but after a considerable amount of persuasion I promised to hazard the attempt: hence these rough notes. The reader will see that I have not attempted to write formal or elaborate articles on the various things and places that I have seen in my travels, but have rather tried to write them in an easy conversational style. Since my return scores of friends have pressed me to re-publish them in the book or pamphlet form, at the same time promising support as that was an idea that had not previously occurred to me, I hesitated for a month or two, but as many entirely disinterested parties continued to speak kindly of these my maiden efforts, and advised their re-publishing, I at last decided to do so. This book was released on 2017-05-28 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of an Embassy From the Governor-General of India to the Courts of Siam and Cochim China, 1830, Vol. 2 of 2: Exhibiting a View of the Actual State of Those Kingdoms The Siamese have the same prejudice against white teeth with many other Eastern people, and at an early age they stain them with an inde lible black, without, however, filing and destroy ing the enamel Of the front teeth, like the Indian islanders. In other respects, they evince no dis position to disfigure the natural form Of the body, and are especially to be distinguished from the Burmans and Peguan s, by the gen eral practice Of tattooing the whole body, which prevails among the two last tribes. Among the Siamese the use Of tobacco has be come universal; they chew it in moderate quan tities, but smoke it perpetually. A Siamese is seldom to be seen without a cigar in his mouth, or stuck behind his ear ready for use. Of the areca and betel-nut they are perhaps the most constant and persevering consumers Of all the people Of the East, exceeding in this respect even the Malays themselves. The soil and climate are peculiarly suited to the production of both, and the cheapness which is the consequence, no doubt contributes, along with the indolent character Of the people, to render the consumption so great. The preparation, as they use it, is the same as in other countries, with the exception of the catechu, which forms no part Of the ingredients. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six Months in India, Vol. 2 of 2 Preparations were made for dinner outside the entrance, where it was refreshing again to be in the open air, and a sumptuous banquet was laid before us, which inspired us with feelings forming a striking con trast with what we had just experienced. The sight Of the sun setting on the water from a solitary elevation was most grand and elevating. Nature has throughout all ages borne her own unvarying testimony to the holiness and greatness Of the Creator, who is ever the same, though men forget Him in their many inventions. When darkness closed in, blue torches were lighted in the temple, which produced wonderful effects of light and shade on the large columns and sculptured figures. In due time we descended to the shore, and a brilliant moon lighted us Over the waters to our homes. The schools were, of course, an early object of my attention, after my return to Bombay. I was invited to see three, for girls, on the morning of February 7; from that time until my departure, visits to the schools, and conversation with the managers, so as to understand their real wants and wishes, occupied a very large share of my time and attention.
