It is a day-by-day record of a Texas private who served both in the Trans-Mississippi Department and the Army of Tennessee. The book has two distinctive features that cause it to stand apart from other soldier narratives. In the first place, it was printed by the author himself, one page at a time, on a ten dollar "Octavo Novelty Press." In the second place, the entire edition of 100 copies that he printed in 1876 was illustrated by sixty-one original photographs sent to Heartsill by members of his company, the W. P. Lane Rangers, and pasted by the author into each of the books. All of these photographs-and pictures of plain people for this period are rarely to be had-are reproduced in this edition. There are no battlefield heroics, but there is also no lack of heroism. It presents the suffering and courage of both sides, as written by two people-two nurses-who lived through it. Not many people realize that Louisa May Alcott, the author of Little Women, was also a Civil War nurse. While serving at the Union Hospital in Washington DC, she wrote a series of letters to her family describing her experiences. These were published in Commonwealth magazine. and eventually became the basis for Hospital Sketches-the book that is presented here. In 1862 Kate Cumming volunteered to be a nurse for the Confederacy and saw duty until the end of the war in 1865. During that period she kept a journal, which was later turned into a book called A Journal of Hospital Life in the Confederate Army of Tennessee. This was later re-edited and published as Gleanings from Southland, which is the version used here. Her account is made all the more tragic by the fact that she was not only reporting on the horrors of the battlefield, but on the horrors of a country that was literally being dismantled around her. No understanding of the Civil War can be complete without appreciating this side of the war as well.

Book excerpt: In July 1861, Alfred Tyler Fielder, of Dyer County, Tennessee, then 47 years of age and married, left his wife and enlisted as a private soldier in the Friendship Volunteers, later Company B, 12th Tennessee Infantry. After basic training at Camp Brown, Tennessee, Fielder fought in the battles of Belmont, Shiloh, the Kentucky Campaign, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, and the Atlanta Campaign. Fielder was wounded in the severe July 22, 1864 fighing at Atlanta, GA. After he was taken from the field, Fielder was sent to the Confederate hospital at Griffin, GA where he recovered from his wounds. After recuperation, Fielder rejoined the Army of Tennessee in time for the surrender in April, 1865. During the war, Fielder advanced in rank from private, to Ordnance Sergeant, to Lieutenant, to Captain of his company. This journal chronicles the day-to-day life and experiences of Alfred Tyler Fielder, a common soldier from West Tennessee who was a member of the 12th Tennessee Infantry, Cheatham's Division, Hardee's Corps, Army of Tennessee during the American Civil War. In this edition, Fielder's grammar, spelling, and sentence structure remain unedited, just as he wrote it approximately 150 years ago. Fielder's original diary is currently one of the most detailed Civil War diaries in the possession of the Tennessee Historical Society.
