Book A History of Williams College Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Williams College Classic Reprint written by Leverett Wilson Spring and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Williams College For the first two third of the forty years and six months which comprise the lifetime of Colonel Ephraim Williams, founder of the college, biographic materials are few and meagre. The vital records of his native town, the will of his grandfather, and an unsigned "Sketch" in the eighth volume of the "Collections" of the Massachusetts Historical Society seem to be the only available sources of information. It appears that April I, 1713, Ephraim Williams, Senior, of Newton, married Elizabeth, daughter of Abraham Jackson, a substantial and reputable townsman, and that their eldest son, Ephraim, Junior, was born March 7, 1715, or, by old style, February 24, 1714.On the 12th of April, 1718, and a few days after the birth of a second son, Thomas, Elizabeth Williams died, and her two children were practically adopted by their grandfather. Book Sketches of Williams College Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sketches of Williams College Classic Reprint written by David Ames Wells and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Williams College In preparing the history of the college, we are in debted for much of our information to addresses delivered at the dedication of the Chapel, in 1828, and at the semi-centennial Celebration, in 1843 also to biographical sketches of Presidents Fitch and Moore, in the Quarterly Register; the life of Dr. Griffin, and certain valuable manuscripts, and much oral informa tion, with which we have been kindly favored, and for which we are truly grateful. We have clothed the facts given us in the best garments to be found in our scanty wardrobe. In the second part, we have endeavored to give such a sketch of the present state of the college, its regula tions, its customs, and its attractions, as shall present a correct picture to those who are unacquainted with the subject, but wish to become so. This part in particular, we are aware, betrays a lack of the 'labor limae.' And if asked why it has not been bestowed, our excuse might be the same which a New England lady would give for not imitating the Chinese woman who filed a crowbar down to a needle it would take too long, and not be in the fashion of this age of steam. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Williamsiana: A Bibliography of Pamphlets Books Relating to the History of Williams College, 1793-1911 This attempt to bring together the titles of books and pamphlets including a few manuscripts and magazine articles dealing with Williams college, was started in 1907 at the suggestion of Mr. James I. Wyer, to be submitted to the New York State Library School as the bibliographic thesis in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the B. L. S. degree. The catalogued and uncatalogued material in the Williams College Library forms the basis of the bibliography. It has been examined in detail. The Berkshire Athenaeum, Boston Public Library, Library of Congress, Massachusetts Historical Society Library, Massachusetts State Library, New York Public Library and the New York State Library have been searched for additional data. The subject readings under which the material is grouped are those indicated in Dewey's Decimal Classification in the section for colleges and universities. The incompleteness of the collection covered by this bibliography is apparent to no one more than it is to the compiler. But with this very fact in mind it is published that it may serve to indicate to persons seeking such information what printed matter is at hand regarding the various phases of Williams college. But, moreover, it is issued with the sincere hope that the collection will be made more nearly complete and be increased by gifts of publications of all kinds, class and alumni reports and other memorabilia, either in manuscript or in print, relating in any way to the college, its officers, alumni and students. It is intended that all such records shall be carefully preserved and systematically arranged in the College Library, in order that they may be available to the Alumni and to all who are interested in the history and life of the college. It is a pleasure to acknowledge the kind interest of many persons in this bibliography. To two gentlemen especially I tender my warmest thanks. Mr. Herman Henry Bernard Meyer, Chief Bibliographer of the Library of Congress, has given me several valuable suggestions. My esteemed friend, Dr. Leverett Wilson Spring, D. D., Professor of English Literature, Emeritus, in Williams college, has read the manuscript and in this way has brought to my researches the benefit of his life-long studies in the history of Williams college. This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address, Delivered Before the Society of Alumni of Williams College, at Williamstown: August 1, 1865 We are gathered to-day in peace. The horrid scenes of war no longer disturb our land. The authority of our Government is acknowledged and submitted to, from the St. Johns to the Rio Grande. Our flag, baptized by the blood, and consecrated by the sacrifices of our fathers, re-baptized and made doubly sacred by the blood of our sons and brothers, and by the sacrifices of us all, - to-day proudly flies upon the breeze, a symbol of liberty secured to all the inhabitants of this land, - a promise and pledge of liberty to come, to the oppressed of every nation. Flowers are growing upon the graves of our fallen heroes, and nature, - with its thousand gentle fingers, is covering with forms of beauty the evidences of terrible strife upon our battle fields. In the midst of this joy and peace, there are many things we cannot, would not forget, but hold in everlasting and grateful remembrance.
