Book excerpt: Among all the ancient literatures, that of India is... undoubtedly in intrinsic value and aesthetic merit second only to that of Greece.-from the IntroductionIt is the oldest recognized language on the planet-indeed, Sanskrit was considered the language of the gods by ancient Indians. This is perhaps the first truly accessible volume ever published on the literature of the grand philosophers and poets of ancient India, and its power and importance has not diminished since it first appeared in 1900.This compact yet comprehensive overview of Sanskrit works covers the Rigveda, the Sutras, the epics, lyric poetry, drama, fairy tales & fables, and more. With profound insights into the mindsets of ancient and medieval India, this important volume will please students of history, world literature, and comparative linguistics.British scholar ARTHUR A. MACDONELL (1854-1930) was Boden Professor of Sanskrit at Oxford University. He is also the author of A Vedic Reader for Students, Sanskrit Grammar for Students, and India's Past: A Survey of Her Literatures, Religions, Languages and Antiquities.

These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside A History of Sanskrit Literature: Look inside the book: After Alexander’s invasion, the Greeks became to some extent acquainted with the learning of the Indians; the Arabs, in the Middle Ages, introduced the knowledge of Indian science to the West; a few European missionaries, from the sixteenth century onwards, were not only aware of the existence of, but also acquired some familiarity with, the ancient language of India; and Abraham Roger even translated the Sanskrit poet Bhart?ihari into Dutch as early as 1651. ...Considering that the affinity of the oldest form of the Avestan language with the dialect of the Vedas is already so great that, by the mere application of phonetic laws, whole Avestan stanzas may be translated word for word into Vedic, so as to produce verses correct not only in form but in poetic spirit; considering further, that if we knew the Avestan language at as early a stage as we know the Vedic, the former would necessarily be almost identical with the latter, it is impossible to avoid the conclusion that the Indian branch must have separated from the Iranian only a very short time before the beginnings of Vedic literature, and can therefore have hardly entered the North-West of India even as early as 1500 B.C.

Book A History of Sanskrit Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Sanskrit Literature Classic Reprint written by Arthur A. Macdonell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Sanskrit Literature IT is undoubtedly a surprising fact that down to the pre sent time no history of Sanskrit literature as a whole has been written in English. For not only does that literature possess much intrinsic merit, but the light it sheds on the life and thought of the population of our Indian Empire ought to have a peculiar interest for the British nation. Owing chiefly to the lack of an adequate account of the subject, few, even of the young men who leave these shores every year to be its future rulers, possess any connected information about the litera ture in which the civilisation of Modern India can be traced to its sources, and without which that civilisation cannot be fully understood. It was, therefore, with the greatest pleasure that I accepted Mr. Gosse's invitation to contribute a volume to this series of Literature: qf the World; for this appeared to me to be a peculiarly good opportunity for diffusing information on a subject in which more than twenty years of continuous study and teaching had instilled into me an ever-deepening interest. Professor Max Muller's valuable History of Ancient Sanskrit Literature is limited in its scope to the Vedic period. It has long been out of print; and Vedic te search has necessarily made great strides in the forty years which have elapsed since its publication.
