Y In the consideration of Hans Hansen Bergen's patent at the Waaleboght, page 8, it will be remembered that we reached and somewhat overlapped the bound ary line between the towns of Brooklyn and Bushwick, - a boundary line, which, according to the earliest patent of the town of Brooklyn, was identical with Ber gen's northerly bounds. It might be designated on the map of the present city of Brooklyn, by a line drawn from the East river, following the course of Division avenue, to about at its junction with Tenth street, and from that point extending in a somewhat south-easterly direction towards Newtown. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the City of Brooklyn, Vol. 1 of 2: Including the Old Town and Village of Brooklyn, the Town of Bushwick, and the Village and City of Williamsburgh In the year 1824, Gabriel Furman, a native of the town, published a little volume which he modestly entitled "Notes on the History of Brooklyn," and which, for that day, possessed great merit as a local history. After him, in the form of occasional contributions to magazines and newspapers, came the numerous productions of that worthy citizen, Gen. Jeremiah Johnson, himself a connecting link between Brooklyn's Past and Present. Benjamin Thompson, the historian of Long Island, in 1843, and the Rev. Nathaniel S. Prime, his successor in the same historic field, in 1845, each gave interesting but necessarily brief resumes of Brooklyn history; while Thos. P. Teale's somewhat scanty "Chronicles" in Spooner's Directory for 1848, and J. T. Bailey's "Historical Sketch," in 1840, close the list of what may properly be called histories of this Town and City. The Town of Bushwick and the City of Williamsburgh have had their histories outlined in a similar manner, by Thompson, Prime and Johnson; and by Mr. C. S. Schroeder, in the Long Island Family Circle, in 1852; the only work, however, which can pretend to the dignity of a volume, being the "History of Williamsburgh," published by Mr. Samuel Reynolds, in 1852, as an adjunct to the Williamsburgh Directory of that year. These were the pioneer historians of Brooklyn history, to whose efforts all honor is due. The present history had its inception, in the Fall of 1859, in a casual suggestion of my friend Mr. James S. Loring, of this city. From that time to the present, it has been prosecuted with persistency of purpose, although with frequent interruptions, and always amid circumstances least favorable to literary composition. Book A History of the City of Brooklyn and Kings County Volume I

Download or read book A History of the City of Brooklyn and Kings County Volume I written by Stephen M. Ostrander and published by ANNIE A. OSTRANDER. This book was released on 2013 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of the City of Brooklyn and Kings County (Volume I) At the time of his death, in 1885, Mr. Ostrander had completed considerable MS. for a history of the City of Brooklyn and Kings County; had prepared many chronological notes with a view to fuller writing, and had accumulated a mass of material in the form of transcripts, references, newspaper and other reports. It was his own understanding that a first volume of a proposed two-volume history might be regarded as well in hand, and that the wherewithal for the remaining chapters was advanced toward completion. At the outset of his undertaking the editor met the embarrassment of not finding any outline which might reveal the precise form in which the author intended to cast his work. Mr. Ostrander worked with a definite idea, but did not formulate this idea in writing, and only the completed expressions of this idea remained for the guidance of the editor. It became apparent that the author intended to rearrange and extend the matter for the earlier chapters. This matter was preserved in the form of a series of articles published in the Brooklyn "Eagle," during 1879-80, covering the period from the discovery by Hudson to the beginning of the Revolution. The degree of attention which these articles attracted induced Mr. Ostrander to extend the series far beyond the range he originally intended to give to them. As a result these articles were not precisely consecutive, nor was the matter so ordered as to adapt itself to book chapters without material changes. Without knowing the author's design in detail, it was exceedingly difficult to effect these changes save upon lines which the natural symmetry of such a work seemed to suggest, and the editor has had no hesitation in so rearranging the material, and in changing such features of the narrative as had been temporarily essential to serial publication.

Excerpt: ... sylvania, but was hastily recalled to this city, by reason of the breaking out of the riot in New York, and were kept on duty in Brooklyn for a month. In 1868, Col. Woodward resigned and was succeeded by Gen. James Jourdan, and he in 1869 by Thos. S. Dakin, who afterwards became brigadier general and Lt. Col. Fred. A. Mason was elected colonel in his place. The regiment now numbers about five hundred men, in a fine state of discipline. The Fourteenth Regiment (Brooklyn Chasseurs), was organized in 1846. and had for its first colonel, Philip 8. Crooke, of Flatbush, Long Island, who was succeeded in January, 1852, by Jesse C. Smith, and he by Alfred M. Wood. Like the other old regiments, each company had its own peculiar uniform, and it was not until 1861, that a common uniform was adopted, viz: the red zouave dress, in which it won such renown during the civil war. The Fourteenth has the most glorious record of service during the war of any regiment in the militia, or of any regiment recruited especially for the war. From the early and dark days of the rebellion until light pierced the gloom, the Fourteenth did continued service. Having early won a reputation for gallantry and intrepidity, it was always put to the front, and when arduous or dangerous duty was to be done, the Fourteenth was called upon to perform it. Thus it lost heavily. When the news reached here of the firing upon Fort Sumter, the Fourteenth regiment immediately proceeded to place itself upon a war footing, and its services were at once offered to the government, but before orders were received to march, the general government refused to accept any regiment unless for a term of three years. At this time the regiment was encamped upon Fort Greene, and those terms of...
