Book Pioneer History of Wise County

Download or read book Pioneer History of Wise County written by Cliff D. Cates and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneer History of Wise County: From Red Men to Railroads Twenty Twenty Years of Intrepid History Beyond a half century of time has intervened since the drama of settlement was enacted on the pioneer stage of Wise County The memory of the events are growing dim in the minds of the remaining actors, who themselves are dropping, one by one, behind the scenes, never to return again before the foot-lights of time. Recognition of these somber truths has led to the compilation of the facts introduced in this book. The language used is inartistic, yet the facts themselves are there and must remain. For the errors of composition glaring forth from every page, it would be appropriate to apologize, but such an act would convict the writer of attitudinizing as a professional in the art of composition, a position that is at once waived and disclaimed. It has profoundly gratified me to be the means of the perpetuation of the lives of the pioneer fathers, their loyal acts and doings, into indestructible record, and while the struc ture is humiliating, it is none the less true that the opportunity to perform so felicitous a service has been responded to with the gratitude that a recognition of the high merit of the general task confers. This book was released on 2018-02-17 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Pioneer Settlement of Phelps and Gorham's Purchase, and Morris' Reserve: Embracing the Counties of Monroe, Ontario, Livingston, Yates, Steuben, Most of Wayne and Allegany, and Parts of Orleans, Genesee, and Wyoming The subjects of France, as it would now seem, when such a vast field had been opened for possession; after they had seen and heard of more promising and congenial regions, made but a poor choice of her share in the New W'orld. We are left principally to con jecture for the explanation: First, the broad stream of the St. Law rence invited them to enter and explore it; no where were Europe ans met by the natives with more friendly manifestations; and a lucrative trade soon added to the inducements. It was a mighty flood that they saw pouring into the ocean, with a uniformity that convinced them of the vast magnitude and extent of the region it drained. Though ice-bound for long and dreary months, when spring approached, its fetters gave way, and on rolled its rushing tide, a swift witness that it came from congenial regions embraced in their discovery. Beside, a shorter route to the Indies, across this continent, was one of the prominent and early objects of European navigators, following the discovery of Columbus. It was in fact, a main object, allied perhaps with visions of precious metals - for actual colonization, was at first but incidental to the leading objects. Book Pioneers and Makers of Arkansas Classic Reprint

Download or read book Pioneers and Makers of Arkansas Classic Reprint written by Josiah H. Shinn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneers and Makers of Arkansas The aim of this book will be as Macaulay expressed it to make the past present, to bring the present near, to invest with the reality of human flesh and blood beings whom we are too much inclined to consider as personified qualities, rather than to rob history of its human element by a cataloguing of facts without effort to read their meaning. With Lord Acton, the sanest historic authority, we believe that History is the con science oi mankind, and have therefore set out thousands of facts as a potent influence in showing what the pioneers really did - their modus operandi - their hopes, joys and sorrows, asparts of an experience we are interested to know and from which we may one and all draw general lessons of moral and political wisdom. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Haverhill: An Historical Address I am going to tell you as well as I can in the time that your patience allows me, in simple lines, the story of this old city that was named Haverhill at the very beginning of its settlement, two-hundred-and-seventy-five years ago, and that occupies the site of an Indian village, called Pentucket, long abandoned when the white settlers first came here. So rich is this history, so full of traditions, so abounding in delightful and eventful by-ways is this story, that were I to relate it all, the night would fall and the morrow come and the morrow's morrow before I reached the end. Much, therefore, that I would tell you I must leave untold; or, better, I must invite you to read it yourselves in the abundant literature that contains it. However imperfectly I may perform my task, I hope to help you to appreciate thoughtfully the high purpose, the courage, the indomitable will, that planted a home here in the wilderness, that bore hardship and fatigue, that braved dangers, that withstood tyranny, that fought for freedom, that gave sacrifices of its dearest for national honor and unity, that painfully planted the seed of industries and prosperity, and left the priceless inheritance of it all for our enjoyment.
