Book The Paston Letters

Download or read book The Paston Letters written by Norman Davis and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1999 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Pastons of Norfolk left behind them an incomparable picture of life in fifteenth-century England in the earliest great collection of family letters in English."--BOOK JACKET. "The letters span three generations and most were written during the reigns of Henry VI, Edward IV, and Richard III, in a period of political turmoil, local anarchy and war abroad and at home. They reveal personal hopes and anxieties, and contain as well as business matters a wealth of information on leisure pursuits, education, and domestic life. The writers express themselves with a clarity and vigour that is remarkable at this early date, and the letters illustrate, as no other documents can, the state of the language in daily use immediately before and after the introduction of printing."--BOOK JACKET. "This modernized selection prepared from the original manuscripts is designed to present the full range of the Pastons' principal concerns."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Confessions of an International Banker

Download or read book Confessions of an International Banker written by Sean Hickey and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the City of London to the deserts of Arabia, the former Soviet states, and sub-Saharan Africa, this book traces the life and career of a man who has been a banker in some remarkably challenging environments over a period of half a century. The author has counted bales of cotton in Yemen, dodged Israeli bombs in Lebanon, financed exports from Romania in the days of Ceausescu, been a banker to a member of a ruling family in the Gulf, conducted business in the sauna of a bank in Kazakhstan, and met Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. In his spare time, he has taken an active part in amateur theater groups in the countries in which he has lived, served as a member of committees administering cemeteries, and been a warden appointed by the British Embassy to assist their citizens in times of trouble. As well as being an engrossing story of banking in many varied countries, the book includes chapters about the background to the problems of some of the places in which he has worked that show a clear understanding of the history and politics involved. Having lived in the Middle East for much of his life, he comments on the Arab Spring, and his long and diverse banking career has enabled him to write incisively on events in the industry in recent years. He draws conclusions on both of these momentous stories.

Book Nelson and Napoleon

Download or read book Nelson and Napoleon written by Christopher Lee and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horatio Nelson is Britain's greatest naval hero; Trafalgar, in 1805, her greatest naval victory. Nelson and Napoleon, first published in 2005, is the story of how Britannia came to rule the waves for more than a hundred years. Christopher Lee re-examines the myths of Trafalgar, plotting Napoleon's overweening ambition to invade England and Nelson's single-minded dedication to seeking glory. He shows how Villeneuve had worked out Nelson's famous plan of attack, and demonstrates how the battle could easily have turned the other way. Lee also paints a vivid picture of the protagonists: particularly of the creation of a national hero in Nelson and his intense rivalry with Napoleon. 'Christopher Lee's vivid and painstaking account cuts through the folklore, replacing it with wonderful insights into early nineteenth-century Britain and Europe.' Daily Express

Book Godly Learning

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Morgan
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1988-03-31
  • ISBN : 9780521357005
  • Pages : 382 pages

Download or read book Godly Learning written by John Morgan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1988-03-31 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Godly Learning attempts to establish the relationship which Puritans worked out between faith and reason in the eighty years before the Civil War. This was a period of rapid expansion of educational facilities, of a clash between humanist values of the Renaissance and the fideism of the Reformation, and of confrontations between traditionalist (primarily Aristotelian) approaches to knowledge and the more experimental path signalled by Bacon. Taking an existential approach to the question of meaning, Puritans sought their solution in the development of a covenant theology based on a life of active faith. They argued vehemently that natural reason was incapable of finding the path to salvation and only faith could regenerate reason to its proper capabilities. At the same time, Puritans emphasised the value of learning for comprehension of Scripture and preparation of sermons. Starting with a fresh approach to the question of defining Puritans, Godly Learning proceeds to delineate the infrequently studied puritan mentalité which informed the better-known public political and ecclesiological positions. Not since the work of Perry Miller has there been such a thorough attempt to comprehend the Puritan view of reason, and the implications of that view.
