Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MacKenzie King did it, so did Susanna Moody. In fact, many Canadians consulted the spirits as part of a religious experience, to seek guidance for themselves and others, and to attempt to learn what lies beyond the grave. Some came to the seance room to hear ancient wisdom while others came to understand the nature of psychic phenomena. Like the mechanisms that produced the flashing lights, cool breezes, and whirling trumpets that materialized in the presence of the medium, their beliefs and experiences have been mostly hidden, until now. In this first full-length study of Canadian spirit communication, Stan McMullin has drawn upon seance notes, letters, diaries, and special collections to create a fascinating picture of how educated people were drawn to spiritualism and psychic research. Anatomy of a Seance shows that for many Canadians attempting to sort out their religious beliefs and find an acceptable marriage between religion and science the seance room provided an alternative to formal religious dogma. Despite the opposition of mainline churches, spiritualism offered the possibility of a "scientific" religion that could prove the existence of heaven.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Burke's career spanned a key period in Canadian architecture as the profession transcended its colonial beginnings to reach maturity with Canadian-born practitioners who converted both American architectural developments and European traditions into forms appropriate to the new Canadian federation. Burke's contributions to Canadian architecture include introducing the technology of the "Chicago men" to Canada and helping to establish a formal professional organization for architects in Ontario. Carr documents a comprehensive selection of Burke's works, including his firm's famous Robert Simpson store in Toronto, the first curtain-wall construction in Canada. She places Burke's life and career within the larger social context, addressing the influence of American architects and architecture, the sociology of professions, the organization of architectural offices, and the history of particular building forms. Toronto Architect Edmund Burke is not only a study of Burke's life and work; it is also an insightful look into the history of Canadian architecture.

Book Sentinels of History

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mark K. Christ
  • Publisher : University of Arkansas Press
  • Release : 2000-01-01
  • ISBN : 9781557286048
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book Sentinels of History written by Mark K. Christ and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sentinels of History was conceived of as a way to mark the turn of the millennium by the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program. This generously illustrated book contains thirty-nine essays, each of which showcases an important Arkansas site and is written by a noted authority. Also included is a location map for these sites and a full appendix providing location information, county by county, for the more than two thousand surviving properties in Arkansas (as of June 1999) that appear on the National Register. The essays are as wide-ranging as Roger Kennedy's placement of the Toltec Mounds at the time of Charlemagne, Donald Harington's sensitive look at the "bigeminal" architecture of the Wolf dogtrot cabin, and Neil Compton's egalitarian tribute to the Boxley Valley Historic District on the Buffalo National River. At least one current color photo of the site and one historic image are included with each essay. In addition, illustrations of the locations or structures listed in the appendix are scattered throughout sections. In all, Sentinels of History serves as a lavish inventory of historic properties in Arkansas at the end of the twentieth century.
