Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Methodist Church, South, in the United States IN a history confined to brief limits, only a general out line-oi leading events can be given. The leading events in the history Of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, took place, for the most part, in connection with the General Conferences. This fact has largely determined the plan and order Of treatment in the present instance. It is true, also, that in the case Of the Southern Methodist Church the action Of the various General Conferences has been, throughout, representative, in a singular degree, Of the thoughts, views, and status Of the membership at large. But for these considerations the scheme Of treatment ac cording to General Conferences might seem arbitrary and artificial. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Methodist Episcopal Church in the South Is the Methodist Episcopal Church, by its efforts to establish and extend itself in the States which were once known as Slave States, violating any right of any other Church; and this, of course, means any right of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South? In trying to answer this question, I have in mind, at the present moment, not so much what may have been said at any time by ministers of our own Church in the North, as what ministers and members of our Church, in the prosecution of their work in the South, are not unfrequently compelled to hear from ministers and members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in regard to our presence in their midst. It is affirmed by them that we are out of our place in being in the South; that, agreeably to the Plan of Separation adopted by the General Conference of 1844, the South was set apart as the field of operation for the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, while the Methodist Episcopal Church was expected to limit its labors to the North. Book History of Methodism in Oklahoma Vol 1

Download or read book History of Methodism in Oklahoma Vol 1 written by Sidney Henry Babcock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Methodism in Oklahoma, Vol. 1: Story of Indian Mission Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South; 1935 The first great mission of the Methodist Church in the United States was to the Indians. The purpose of this book is to give a story of that mission from its beginning in the East in 1820 until the close of the Indian Mission Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South in 1896. After the division of the Metho dist Church in 1844, this story will deal especially with the work of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. In 1910 when the Oklahoma Conference, succes sor to the Indian Mission Conference, was divided into the East Oklahoma Conference and the West Oklahoma Conference, the East Oklahoma Conference fell heir to all the records and history of the Indian Mission Conference. The East Oklahoma Conference at its session in 1926 appointed the Reverend J ohn Y. Bryce to prepare for publication a history of Methodism in Oklahoma. In response to that request, with much labor and expense, he gathered together the broken fragments of the labors of the men of the church dur ing the period. When the two Conferences were united under the name, Oklahoma Conference, the Reverend Sidney H. Babcock was added to the Historical Commission and asked to aid in the preparation of the history. His task was to organize the material assembled, relate it to contemporaneous history and weave the story. The Methodist Church had a vital part in the maintenance of order, the promotion of education and the building of a civilization during the constant changes that were occasioned by the efforts of the United States government first, to colonize the Indians in a territory all their own, and aid the various tribes to set up governments under their own national coun cils; and then, to undo all that had been done by de stroying the national integrity of the various Indian nations and uniting them under the Stars and Stripes.
