Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Legislative Union of Great Britain and Ireland Dissatisfied with endless assertions unaccompanied by proof, the author of the present work determined to investigate the subject for himself. For this purpose he examined closely and in detail the original and contem poraneous authorities. At an early stage of the inquiry he was surprised to find that there was no evidence to sustain the accusations made against the manner in which the Union was carried, and that all the charges against the Government rested finally on the stories of Barrington, or on the declamatory statements of the Opposition during the sessions of 1799 and 1800, statements which, when the anti-unionists were challenged in both Houses of Parliament to substantiate, they declined to do so. As the author proceeded in his search, he discovered that, after its terms were made known, and the public had had time for reflection, the Union was thankfully accepted by the two communities which made up Ireland; that the Protestants, after the first burst of clamour, were, as a body, converted, and became well wishers to the measure and that the Catholics, after a short hesitation, gave the Union their hearty assent and support. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Legislative Union of Great Britain and Ireland Though a century has not elapsed since the Legislative Union of Great Britain and Ireland was accomplished, ignorance or doubt has gathered round its history. Misrepresentation and unworthy declamation have obscured all the facts of the case. The original sources of information have been neglected or wilfully avoided, and credit has been given to statements in one-sided and extravagant books, like Grattan's Life, or worthless publications such as Barrington's romances. Book The Connexion Between the Kingdom of Ireland and the Crown of England Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Connexion Between the Kingdom of Ireland and the Crown of England Classic Reprint written by R. R. Madden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Connexion Between the Kingdom of Ireland and the Crown of England IN the notice of the Committee appointed by the Repeal Associa tion to carry into effect its objects, with respect to the proposed Essays on the Legislative Union, to be submitted for adjudication to its members, it is suggested that candidates should illustrate the question by examples taken from the history of existing institutions of other countries, and in particular that they should examine how far the constitution of Norway, and its connexion with Sweden, may serve as a model for the new constitution of Ireland. The suggestions of the committee not being obligatory, and the avowed object of the association being to obtain the best argument that can be adduced in support of the Repeal of the act of Union, the writer treats the subject according to his views of the best mode of dealing with it. It is not, he thinks, sufficient to refer to the existing relation of countries connected like Norway and Sweden for an illustration of the subject. Nor is it meeting that subject in all its aspects to confine our regards to the advan tages of repeal, or the disadvantages of a legislative union. It is right at the threshold of this inquiry, to state distinctly, and in terms that cannot be mistaken, or misinterpreted, the sense in which the author uses the words, a distinct kingdom, independent nation, and separate institutions. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Constitutional and Parliamentary History of Ireland Till the Union Irish Parliamentary and Constitutional history, speaking, as a political leader, not as an historical student. His statement, however, deals with facts and not with theories, and his description of the history, constitution, and powers of the Irish Parliament, in his speech at the Home Rule Conference in 1 873 is in remarkable accord with his description of the history, constitution, and powers of that Parliament, when speaking, not as an advocate of the restoration of Parliamentary institutions in Ireland, but as the leading Opponent of Mr. O'connell, in 1843, in the debate on Repeal of the Union in the Corporation of Dublin. I examined both speeches very carefully, and directed Mr. Butt's attention to their absolute agree ment in exposition of the history of the Irish Parliaments, which he acknowledged with gratification, stating that Mr. O'connell had said openly in the course of debate that Ireland would, in the future - Mr. Butt was then only in his thirtieth year - have in Mr. Butt a defender of Irish National rights, while he said to him in private that he would sooner or later be a great leader of the Irish Nation. Mr. Butt's outline of the history of the Irish Parliaments, which is unaffected by his political position in 1843 as an opponent of the Repeal of the Union, and in 1873 as an expounder of Home Rule, may be safely accepted as accurate and as an introduction to this work.
