Book A History of the Hebrew Monarchy Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Hebrew Monarchy In this third edition I have omitted many controversial notes, which seem no longer needful. To avoid any mystery, and prevent future misconception, I will say plainly that I hold in my hands a letter from the late Editor of the North British Review, which fixes on the late Archbishop Whately the responsibility of a certain article, by which I was much aggrieved. But as it is not likely to be now read, I am glad to say no more about it. A few general remarks may assist the reader to understand the point of view from which the following pages were written. 1. I did not start from the assumption that "miracles are incredible;" but from the earlier axiom, that "the more strange the thing attested, the more cogent is the proof needed." Under the application of this very cautious principle, it is gradually discovered that the great majority of alleged miracles have really no better evidence than have ghosts, magic, and stories of fairies. In Hebrew history, as in that of Greeks and Romans, the miraculous element disappears in proportion as we obtain historical attestations: thus the belief is undermined by the growth of knowledge and of criticism. - Others may now start from a more advanced principle; that "after the researches of the last 100 years we have a right to presume mistake in every pretended miracle." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parallel History of the Jewish Monarchy, Vol. 2: The Divided Monarchy; 1 Kings 12 to 2 Kings 25, 2 Chronicles 10-36 HE history of the Jewish Monarchy, as given in the Old Testament, is embodied in two narratives, compiled at different times and from different points of view. In the following pages they are combined. When two accounts of the same event are given, they are printed in parallel columns, so as to admit of comparison. When only one account is given, it is printed across the page in the usual way. To facilitate the finding of any given reign, the names of the kings are printed in heavy type the first time they occur on a page. Book The Parallel History of the Jewish Monarchy Vol 1

Download or read book The Parallel History of the Jewish Monarchy Vol 1 written by S. R. Driver and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parallel History of the Jewish Monarchy, Vol. 1: Printed in the Text of the Revised Version 1885; The Reigns of David and Solomon, 1 Samuel 31 to 1 Kings 11, 1 Chronicles 10 to 2 Chronicles 9 I trust the book may be serviceable even to advanced Students, who wish to collate for themselves the two authorities; but it is intended primarily for use in Schools. The difficulty Of following the history in two sometimes concurrent and sometimes divergent authorities, both bound up in the same Bible - and often in very small type - is apt to drive boys to Compendiums and Manuals, ' in which a clear narrative is given, but the dignity and beauty of the original are entirely lost. By te-arranging the text I hope to have made the study of this part of the Bible easier and more attractive. I wish to express my gratitude to the Joint Committee of the Univer sities Of Oxford and Cambridge for leave to print the text of the Revised Version. To Professor Driver, for most readily and kindly allowing me to reprint, as an Introduction, a passage from his Literature of the Old Testament, ' my warmest thanks are due. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hebrew Monarchy: A Commentary, With a Harmony of the Parallel Texts and Extracts From the Prophetical Books The establishment of kingly rule was undoubtedly a part of the Divine purpose, and as such was looked forward to in the Book Of Deuteronomy (ch. 17. 14 It was, indeed, an essential part of the preparation for the kingdom of the Messiah; and in lower matters it gave the Israelites greater national security and more rapid progress in civilization than they had ever enjoyed before. Without the kingdom they could scarcely have worked out the purpose for which they were called into being.
