This book was released on 2016-12-09 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This family history documents the life of George and Elizabeth Chambers; their three children, George Washington, William, and Emma; and their seven grandchildren who were the children of George Washington Chambers. The first part of the narrative describes what little is known about the arrival of George and Elizabeth Chambers in America and the early history of the Chambers family in Philadelphia. The second part of the narrative documents what is known about George Washington Chambers' service in the Civil War, his work as a boatman, and his married life. The third part of the narrative profiles the life of each of George Washington Chambers' children - first the girls and then the boys. The purpose of the document is to chronicle the sequence of major events in the life of the Chambers family; to bring the family back to life, albeit only momentarily; and to depict their fundamental character and outlook on life as a working class family living in Philadelphia during the period 1840 to 1940.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Families in War and Peace Sarah C. Chambers places gender analysis and family politics at the center of Chile's struggle for independence and its subsequent state building. Linking the experiences of both prominent and more humble families to Chile's political and legal history, Chambers argues that matters such as marriage, custody, bloodlines, and inheritance were crucial to Chile's transition from colony to nation. She shows how men and women extended their familial roles to mobilize kin networks for political ends, both during and after the Chilean revolution. From the conflict's end in 1823 until the 1850s, the state adopted the rhetoric of paternal responsibility along with patriarchal authority, which became central to the state building process. Chilean authorities, Chambers argues, garnered legitimacy by enacting or enforcing paternalist laws on property restitution, military pensions, and family maintenance allowances, all of which provided for diverse groups of Chileans. By acting as the fathers of the nation, they aimed to reconcile the "greater Chilean family" and form a stable government and society.

Book Representing the Family

Download or read book Representing the Family written by Deborah Chambers and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2001-08-09 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking at how the family is represented by the media, and by scrutinizing the manner in which it is regulated, this book uncovers the ways in which academic research and welfare policy have colluded with political rhetoric and the popular media to re-invent a mythical ideal family. Representing the Family: combines perspectives from a range of theories including media and cultural studies, sociology, and social history to show how certain types of family life are pathologised; highlights the discrepancies between contemporary representations of the "ideal" family and lived experience; and compares the British experience with that of the United States and Australia.

Book Mrs Oswald Chambers

Download or read book Mrs Oswald Chambers written by Michelle Ule and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among Christian devotional works, My Utmost for His Highest stands head and shoulders above the rest, with more than 13 million copies sold. But most readers have no idea that Oswald Chambers's most famous work was not published until ten years after his death. The remarkable person behind its compilation and publication was his wife, Biddy. And her story of living her utmost for God's highest is one without parallel. Bestselling novelist Michelle Ule brings Biddy's story to life as she traces her upbringing in Victorian England to her experiences in a WWI YMCA camp in Egypt. Readers will marvel at this young woman's strength as she returns to post-war Britain a destitute widow with a toddler in tow. Refusing personal payment, Biddy proceeds to publish not just My Utmost for His Highest, but also 29 other books with her husband's name on the covers. All the while she raises a child alone, provides hospitality to a never-ending stream of visitors and missionaries, and nearly loses everything in the London Blitz during WWII. The inspiring story of a devoted woman ahead of her times will quickly become a favorite of those who love true stories of overcoming incredible odds, making a life out of nothing, and serving God's kingdom.
