Book A History Of The British Army Vol IV Part One 1789 1801

Download or read book A History Of The British Army Vol IV Part One 1789 1801 written by Hon. Sir John William Fortescue and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-13 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir John Fortescue holds a pre-eminent place amongst British military historians, his enduring fame and legacy resting mainly on his life’s work “The History of the British Army”, issued in 20 volumes, which took him some 30 years to complete. In scope and breadth it is such that no modern scholar has attempted to cover such a large and diverse subject in its entirety; but Sir John did so and with aplomb, leading to a readable and comprehensive study. This fourth volume covers the period from 1789 to 1801; as the tocsins of the French Revolution rang around the European continent their effects would lead to almost unceasing warfare for the next twenty years. During the Revolutionary Wars, the British Army would mature during the campaigns of the First Coalition against France always giving a good account of themselves, but their small number meant that the course of the campaign would not lead to victory. The effectiveness of the British Army in sea-borne assaults on French possessions across the world, would lead to much success but also bitter grumbling of Britain’s coalition partners. TIMES.—"We are witnessing the birth of a military classic which is, and will be for some generations to come, without a peer in the subject to which it relates. The debt which the British Army owes to the writer of this moving chronicle of its great achievements, its grandeurs, and its miseries can only be repaid if every member of the Army endeavours to assimilate for himself, and for the profit of his country, Mr. Fortescue’s admirable and most instructive pages." A MUST READ for any military enthusiast.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the British Army, Vol. 4: Part II, 1789-1801 One small body of men, however, which has been for some time withdrawn from our ken, must now be recalled to notice. It will be remembered that it was the declaration of war by Spain against Eng land that had caused Pitt to withdraw the fleet from the Mediterranean, and to evacuate Corsica in the autumn of 1796. Immediately afterwards Spain, under the influence Of the French Directory, threatened Portugal with invasion in order to compel her to close her ports to the British; and Portugal appealed to England for help. Thereupon, the Govern ment decided to send at once five thousand men to Lisbon under General Charles Stuart, with instructions to place himself under the command of the Portuguese Commander-in-chief, and to act in concert with him whether for the Offensive or the defensive.2 Dundas's idea appears to have been to transfer the garrison, which had lately been removed from Corsica to Elba, at once to Lisbon; but it has already been explained how, through the blunders of the War Oflice, the troops were kept at Porto Ferrajo until April 1797. However, in due time they arrived at Gibraltar, and after a month 5 delay reached the 1797. Tagus on the 213t of June, where Stuart was waiting June 21 to receive them. The British regiments, namely. Book Defending a New Nation 1783 1811

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defending a New Nation, 1783-1811, the first volume of the "U.S. Army Campaigns of the War of 1812" series, tells the story of several military campaigns against Indians in the Northwest Territory, the Army's role in suppressing the Whiskey Rebellion (1794), the Quasi-War with France and confrontations with Spain, the influence of Jeffersonian politics on the Army's structure, and the Lewis and Clark expedition. From the end of the Revolutionary War in 1783 to the beginning of the War of 1812, the nascent United States Army encountered significant challenges, both within its own ranks and in the field. The Army faced hostile American Indians in the west, domestic insurrections over taxation, threats of war from European powers, organizational changes, and budgetary constraints. It was also a time of growth and exploration, during which Army officers led expeditions to America's west coast and founded a military academy.

Book Perspectives on the Canadian Way of War

Download or read book Perspectives on the Canadian Way of War written by Bernd Horn and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2006-04-01 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to popular opinion, this nation has always consciously and consistently utilized military force to further its security, as well as its economic and political well-being. Despite the best of intentions to aid others, the reality is that military force has most often been used to serve the national interest in ways that were not always altruistic but rather to serve practical political purpose. In the final analysis, the Canadian military experience has been integral to creating the advanced, affluent, and vibrant nation that exists today. This collection of essays, written by such noted historians and authors as Douglas Delaney, Stephen J. Harris, Ronald Haycock, Michael Hennessy, Bernd Horn, and Sean Maloney, spans the entirety of the Canadian military experience and underlines the reality that the government has consistently used its armed forces to achieve political purpose. More often than not, the "Canadian way of war" has been a direct reflection of circumstance and political will.
