Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Public Education in Rhode Island, From 1636 to 1876 Roger Williams, after returning in 1654 from a two years' visit in England, wrote thus of some of his employments while in that country: "It pleased the Lord to call me for some time, and with some persons, to practice the Hebrew, the Greek, Latin, French and Dutch. The secretary of the council (Mr. Milton) for my Dutch I read him, read me many more languages. I taught two young gentlemen, a parliament man's sons, as we teach our children English, by words, phrases and constant talk." In these brief sentences we see the founder of Rhode Island as a scholar, a teacher, and the friend of Milton. It will always seem a surprising thing that the colony founded by such a man should not have established for itself, like the adjoining colonies of Massachusetts and Connecticut, a system of common schools. Yet nothing is plainer than the reasons which led to this; and they cannot be more clearly stated than they were given a quarter of a century ago by Hon. E. R. Potter, a man who has rendered this State almost equal service in law and in education: - "One of the first things which strikes an observer in considering the early history of Rhode Island, is, that the population was not homogeneous. Massachusetts was settled by colonies from one people, and all actuated by the same notions of religious and civil government, and of a similar religious creed. Connecticut was an offshoot from Massachusetts, and the same principles and ideas had a controlling influence in its settlement. "Rhode Island, on the contrary, was settled by men of all religious views and opinions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Education in Rhode Island The need of a new history of education in Rhode Island is apparent in view of the fact that the latest historical account of the State's educational enterprise was published forty-two years ago. The development of the principle of universal education and the growth of the public school system during these years have been notable in Rhode Island, and the fruitful educational experience and civic progress of this period make the preparation of this history an important public service. A knowledge of Rhode Island public education, including its history, law and administration, is valuable to every citizen as civic information, but it is indispensable to every teacher and superintendent as professional intelligence and inspiration. Four years ago, Dr. Carroll gave us his work on school law and administration in Rhode Island, and now we are indebted to him for his generous service in the painstaking and laborious preparation of the history of education in Rhode Island. These two books complete an invaluable exposition of Rhode Island Education, in which are revealed the meaning of public education and the true function of our public school organization. In his thorough study of school education before 1876, for the period for which others wrote, Dr. Carroll collected new material evidently not considered by them, and discovered discrediting misconceptions and misstatements, which unfortunately have been carelessly accepted and reproduced by later writers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Higher Education in Rhode Island The early life of the colonies was varied. In Massachusetts the close union of church and State gave rise to a system which early fostered educational movements, although it can not be admired for that amount of toleration which characterized some of her sister colonies. The educational movements in the different colonies varied according to their physical characteristics, personnel and religious rule. In any account of the history of education in Rhode Island, the unity of the work would be incomplete were there no reference to the early colonial period. Were the founders and settlers of this State men to demand and appreciate the advantages of education? Was the environment such that when an educational movement was started it could grow under the stimulus of a broad and catholic public Opinion?
