Download or read book A History of Polish Jewry During the Revival of Poland written by Isaac Lewin and published by Shengold Books. This book was released on 1990 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contains two books bound in one volume. "The Political History of Polish Jewry, 1918-1919, " by I. Lewin (pp. 1-220) describes the struggle of Jews for political rights in Poland (and their internal struggle for representation in the Sejm) during the process of organization of Poland as an independent state until it signed the Minority Treaty in Versailles on 28 June 1919. Deals with tensions of the postwar period, including antisemitic manifestations and pogroms in Chelm, Cracow, Lvov, Pinsk, and other localities. "The National Autonomy of Eastern-Galician Jewry in the West-Ukrainian Republic, 1918-1919, " by N.M. Gelber (pp. 221-317) discusses the situation of the Jews and struggle for their rights in the Ukraine, against the background of the Polish-Ukrainian war and emergence of the West Ukrainian Republic in 1918. The Poles wished to assimilate the Jews and form a common front against the Ukrainians. The Jews wished to remain neutral. Analyzes the implications for the Jews, Poles, and Ukrainians of Jewish attempts at neutrality. Deals with conditions which led to the pogrom in Lvov in November 1918, and with the antisemitism of civilian and military authorities in the West Ukrainian Republic which, however, offered Jews full cultural and national autonomy.

This books records the development of this Jewish community. It attempts to capture the uniqueness of each period in the history of this community. Book The Expulsion of Jews from Communist Poland

Download or read book The Expulsion of Jews from Communist Poland written by Anat Plocker and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2022-03 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In March 1968, against the background of the Six-Day War, a campaign of antisemitism and anti-Zionism swept through Poland. The Expulsion of Jews from Communist Poland is the first full-length study of the events, their precursors, and the aftermath of this turbulent period. Plocker offers a new framework for understanding how this antisemitic campaign was motivated by a genuine fear of Jewish influence and international power. She sheds new light on the internal dynamics of the communist regime in Poland, stressing the importance of middle-level functionaries, whose dislike and fear of Jews had an unmistakable impact on the evolution of party policy. The Expulsion of Jews from Communist Poland examines how Communist Party leader Wladyslaw Gomulka's anti-Zionist rhetoric spiraled out of hand and opened up a fraught Pandora's box of old assertions that Jews controlled the Communist Party, the revival of nationalist chauvinism, and a witch hunt in universities and workplaces that conjured up ugly memories of Nazi Germany.

Download or read book Resurrecting the Jew written by Geneviève Zubrzycki and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-27 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth look at why non-Jewish Poles are trying to bring Jewish culture back to life in Poland today Since the early 2000s, Poland has experienced a remarkable Jewish revival, largely driven by non-Jewish Poles with a passionate new interest in all things Jewish. Klezmer music, Jewish-style restaurants, kosher vodka, and festivals of Jewish culture have become popular, while new museums, memorials, Jewish studies programs, and Holocaust research centers reflect soul-searching about Polish-Jewish relations before, during, and after the Holocaust. In Resurrecting the Jew, Geneviève Zubrzycki examines this revival and asks what it means to try to bring Jewish culture back to life in a country where 3 million Jews were murdered and where only about 10,000 Jews now live. Drawing on a decade of participant-observation in Jewish and Jewish-related organizations in Poland, a Birthright trip to Israel with young Polish Jews, and more than a hundred interviews with Jewish and non-Jewish Poles engaged in the Jewish revival, Resurrecting the Jew presents an in-depth look at Jewish life in Poland today. The book shows how the revival has been spurred by progressive Poles who want to break the association between Polishness and Catholicism, promote the idea of a multicultural Poland, and resist the Far Right government. The book also raises urgent questions, relevant far beyond Poland, about the limits of performative solidarity and empathetic forms of cultural appropriation.

Highly recommended.” —Choice Since the end of Communism, Jews from around the world have visited Poland to tour Holocaust-related sites. A few venture further, seeking to learn about their own Polish roots and connect with contemporary Poles. For their part, a growing number of Poles are fascinated by all things Jewish. In this book, Erica T. Lehrer explores the intersection of Polish and Jewish memory projects in the historically Jewish neighborhood of Kazimierz in Krakow. Her own journey becomes part of the story as she demonstrates that Jews and Poles use spaces, institutions, interpersonal exchanges, and cultural representations to make sense of their historical inheritances.
