Book A History of English Philosophy Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of English Philosophy Classic Reprint written by W. R. Sorley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of English Philosophy The purpose of this book is to trace the history of philosophy in Great Britain from the time when it began to be written in the English language until the end of the Victorian era. There are two ways of writing the history of philosophy. One of them sets out from the standpoint of philosophy as conceived by the writer; the other from that of the philosophers themselves. On the former method the fundamental problems of philosophy will be presented at the outset, and each step taken towards their definition and solution will then be noted; whatever is irrelevant to the main issue will be left out of sight, however important it may have been in the minds of some of the philosophers. On the latter method the subject will be approached as it appeared to each philosopher in turn, and the presen tation of definite concepts and clear issues will emerge gradually as the story progresses. Each of these methods has its own advantages and its own dangers. The former concentrates upon the essential, but it is liable to miss historical proportion by stressing certain features and overlooking others. The latter keeps in close touch with the documents, but care is needed to prevent the meaning of the whole from being obscured by details. Download or read book A Student s History of Philosophy Classic Reprint written by Arthur Kenyon Rogers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Student's History of Philosophy These concepts, then, or notions which we frame to serve as shorthand expressions for certain facts, or aspects of reality, come to us with so little labor on our part, that we often are tempted to regard them as self-evident, and certain to present themselves as the manifest points of view whenever men stop to think. But a little examina tion will show that this is a mistake. We are the heir of all the ages in our intellectual life, and so can utilize the results of those who have gone before us. In their 'origin, however, these results were reached in no such simple way as their obviousness to us would seem to suggest, but were wrought laboriously with pain and travail. It is a com mon experience, after we have arrived at the solution of some problem that has been engaging us, to be struck with wonder that we should so long have been baffled by it, when in reality the matter is so plain yet, as a matter of fact, it did bafl'le us. Now every point of view from which man regards the world, is thus at some period of his history a hard-won acquisition. It may stand for a truth - an obvious truth even - when it comes to be recog nized. But the mere existence of a truth is nothing to us, until we have brought it into connection with the current of our own experience and knowledge; and this requires special circumstances and conditions. Download or read book A Brief History of Philosophy Classic Reprint written by Charles Coppens and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief History of Philosophy Having composed and published brief text-books on Logic, Metaphysics and Ethics, which have obtained a considerable circulation in Colleges and Academies, the author of this little volume has frequently been urged to complete the series by adding an equally brief synop sis of the History of Philosophy. Many learned works on this subject are before the public; but they are mostly in foreign languages or written in a spirit alien, if not hostile, to Catholic thought. And yet, as the Catholic Church stands alone in its permanent strength and grandeur among the hundreds of religions in the world, so too its Philosophy is preeminent among the countless speculations of ancient and modern times. There is, however, this difference, that the Church's infallibility in teaching religion is a supernatural endow ment, given to it and maintained in it by its Divine Founder, Jesus Christ; whereas Catholic philosophers, like all others, derive their doctrines directly from hu man reason, but they are usually guarded from impor tant errors by their knowledge of Revelation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Ancient and Medieval Philosophy Perhaps no period in civilization has ever been so rich in specula tive, boldness and penetrating cosmic insight __as the great per_iod of Greek philosophy. It appears that the Greeks were naturally curious and inquisitive about the nature of life and the structure of the uni verse; consequently philosophers like Democritus, Aristotle, and Plato observed all aspects of existence and were occupied with problems which not merely dealt with ethical ideals but also gave a synthesis of human knowledge.
