Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Kashmir during five centuries of Muslim rule is of great and absorbing interest. Even after the establishment of Muslim rule in the valley and the introduction of Islam the Kashmir continued to manifest singular tenderness for their ancient customs and traditions. The influence of their rawaj on their life and thought remained as strong as ever; and they continued to live in perfect harmony with their Hindu brethren Abdul Fazl and Jahangir sang paens to their extraordinary communal amity. Although their leaders often acted the role of gangsters causing civil strife and political chaos, the Kashmir s fought valiantly for their independence against the Mughals and the Pathans. The geographic situation of the valley afforded them heavenly gifts but they suffered patiently the devastating effects of floods, fires and famines.

Book Hindu Rulers Muslim Subjects

Download or read book Hindu Rulers Muslim Subjects written by Mridu Rai and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2004-07-26 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disputed between India and Pakistan, Kashmir contains a large majority of Muslims subject to the laws of a predominantly Hindu and increasingly "Hinduized" India. Examining the 100-year period before that landmark event, during which Kashmir was ruled by Hindu Dogra kings under the aegis of the British, the author highlights the collusion that shaped a decisively Hindu sovereignty over a subject Muslim populace. Focusing on authority, sovereignty, legitimacy, and community rights, she explains how Kashmir's modern Muslim identity emerged. This book shows how the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir was formed as the East India Company marched into India beginning in the late eighteenth century. After the 1857 rebellion, outright annexation was abandoned as the British Crown took over and princes were incorporated into the imperial framework as junior partners. In Kashmir the Dogra kings maintained firm control. They rode roughshod over the interests of the vast majority of their Kashmiri Muslim subjects, planting the seeds of a political movement that remains in thrall to a religiosity thrust upon it for the past 150 years.

Book Warfare in Pre British India 1500BCE to 1740CE

Download or read book Warfare in Pre British India 1500BCE to 1740CE written by Kaushik Roy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-03 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive survey of warfare in India up to the point where the British began to dominate the sub-continent. It discusses issues such as how far was the relatively bloodless nature of pre-British Indian warfare the product of stateless Indian society? How far did technology determine the dynamics of warfare in India? Did warfare in this period have a particular Indian nature and was it ritualistic? The book considers land warfare including sieges, naval warfare, the impact of horses, elephants and gunpowder, and the differences made by the arrival of Muslim rulers and by the influx of other foreign influences and techniques. The book concludes by arguing that the presence of standing professional armies supported by centralised bureaucratic states have been underemphasised in the history of India.
