Book Victorian Religious Revivals

Download or read book Victorian Religious Revivals written by David Bebbington and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-31 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revivals are outbursts of religious enthusiasm in which there are numerous conversions. In this book the phenomenon of revival is set in its broad historical and historiographical context. David Bebbington provides detailed case-studies of awakenings that took place between 1841 and 1880 in Britain, North America and Australia, showing that the distinctive features of particular revivals were the result less of national differences than of denominational variations. These revivals occurred in many places across the globe, but revealed the shared characteristics of evangelical Protestantism. Bebbington explores the preconditions of revival, giving attention to the cultural setting of each episode as well as the form of piety displayed by the participants. No single cause can be assigned to the awakenings, but one of the chief factors behind them was occupational structure and striking instances of death were often a precipitant. Ideas were far more involved in these events than historians have normally supposed, so that the case-studies demonstrate some of the main patterns in religious thought at a popular level during the Victorian period. Laymen and women played a disproportionate part in their promotion and converts were usually drawn in large numbers from the young. There was a trend over time away from traditional spontaneity towards more organised methods sometimes entailing interdenominational co-operation.

This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moore County, NC has long been a challenging place to do genealogical research, even more so if your family lived in Northern Moore County. Due to the immense loss of records in the 1889 Moore County courthouse fire combined with Northern Moore's large mix of Scotch-Irish, German, Swiss, English and other settlers who often kept to themselves and left very little evidence behind - genealogical and historical research on these families generally leaves researchers with no shortage of dead ends, brick walls and ancestors who disappear into genealogical black holes. With this series, Morgan Jackson (www.MooreCountyWallaces.com) seeks to shine a light on these families and piece together the records that survived the fire and the test of time. Utilizing over thirty years of personal research and a multitude of information from numerous sources, he abstracts rare and hard to find land grants, deeds, church records, school records, wills, estates, tax lists, pension records, family bibles, newspaper accounts and court records. This second volume abstracts thousands of these records in a timeline format dating from 1831-1929 including several hundred images and hard to find maps. A full name index includes over 11,000 individuals and over 900 place names.

Join the ranks of America's first Patriots as they unite to declare their independence: **** Old Man Wyman of Woburn, nothing more than a mysterious and deadly figure atop a white horse, mounted a solitary pursuit against the British as they retreated from Concord back to Boston, effectively striking fear deep into the hearts of the redcoats as he diminished their numbers one-by-one. **** Inventor David Bushnell, desperate to aid the outnumbered American naval forces, both befuddled and alarmed British forces when he devised a working prototype for the world's first underwater torpedo and-most impressively – a submersible boat dubbed the "Turtle," America's first submarine. **** South Carolina sisters-in-law Grace and Rachel Martin, carrying rifles and dressed in their husbands' clothing, intercepted important dispatches bound for a nearby British fort when they ambushed the courier and two armed escorts by brandishing their weapons and speaking with deep voices.
