Book A History of London s Prisons

Download or read book A History of London s Prisons written by Geoffrey Howse and published by Grub Street Publishers. This book was released on 2013-01-19 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of The A-Z of London Murders takes readers behind the bars of the city’s numerous jails and tells the tales of their most infamous inmates. London has had more prisons than any other British city. The City’s “gates” once contained prisons but probably the most notorious of all was Newgate, which stood for over seven hundred years. The eleventh-century Tower of London was used as a prison for a variety of high profile prisoners from Sir Thomas More to the Krays. Discover the background of a variety of historic places of incarceration such as the Clink, the King’s Bench Prison, and debtors’ prisons such as the Fleet Prison and the Marshalsea. “Lost” prisons such as the Gatehouse in Westminster, Millbank Penitentiary, Surrey County Gaol in Horsemonger Lane, the House of Detention, Coldbath Fields Prison, and Tothill Fields Bridewell Prison are also described in detail; as are more familiar jails: Holloway, Pentonville, Brixton, Wandsworth, and Wormwood Scrubs. In A History of London’s Prisons, Geoffrey Howse delves not only into the intricate web of historical facts detailing the origins of the capital’s prisons but also includes fascinating detail concerning the day-to-day life of prisoners—from the highly born to the most despicable human specimens imaginable—as well as those less fortunate individuals who found themselves through no fault of their own “in the clink,” some soon becoming clients of the hangman or executioner.

Download or read book Newgate written by Stephen Halliday and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2007-12-31 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been more prisons in London than in any other European city. Of these, Newgate was the largest, most notorious and worst. Built during the twelfth century, it became a legendary place - the inspiration of more poems, plays and novels than any other building in London. It was a place of cruelty and wretchedness, at various times holding Dick Turpin, Titus Oates, Daniel Defoe, Jack Sheppard and Casanova. Because prisons were privately run, any time spent in prison had to be paid for by the prisoner. Housing varied from a private cell with a cleaning woman and a visiting prostitute, to simply lying on the floor with no cover. Those who died inside - and only a quarter of prisoners survived until their execution day - had to stay in Newgate as a rotting corpse until relatives found the money for the body to be released. Stephen Halliday tells the story of Newgate's origins, the criminals it held, the punishments meted out and its rebuilding and reform. This is a compelling slice of London's social and criminal history.

This book was released on 2017-06-28 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The London Prisons, With an Account of the More Distinguished, Persons Who Have Been Confined in Them: To Which Is Added a Description of Chief Provincial Prisons The latter circumstance led me also to enlarge the plan, so as to take in the Past as well as the Present -thc Political Dungeon as well as the Felon's Cell. The papers had, consequently, to be rewritten and greatly increased in length in fact, they can only be considered as the germs of the present work, two thirds of which' is entirely new. A few words will suffice as to the sources whence my information is derived. So far as regards the actual condition of the various prisons, all the state ments are made from personal knowledge and on my own responsibility. The details given in respect to their past history are nearly all gleaned from my own reading. The Tower only excepted, the London prisons have never yet found a historian a case of neglect by no means merited, considering how closely they are connected with the social and literary history of our country. Nearly all the information which is still extant lies widely scattered in plays, poems, letters, biographies, and sermons. It was not my purpose - as will be found explained elsewhere to collect these fragments; but I have not omitted to weave into my work such of them as seemed to me to possess a peculiar interest, anecdotical, social, or literary. I indulge in the hope that this volume will supply a long-felt desideratum in the literature of our domestic history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of the iconic London prison, featuring insights on daily life, the evolution of prison systems, and famous inmates. As the place where prisoners, male and female, awaited trial, execution, or transportation Newgate was Britain’s most feared gaol for over 700 years. It probably best known today from the novels of Charles Dickens including Barnaby Rudge and Great Expectations. But there is much is more to Newgate than nineteenth century notoriety. In the seventeenth century it saw the exploits of legendary escaper and thief Jack Sheppard. Among its most famous inmates were author Daniel Defoe who was imprisoned there for seditious libel, playwright Ben Jonson for murder, and the Captain Kidd for piracy. This book takes you from the gaol’s 12th century beginnings to its final closure in 1904 and looks at daily life, developments in the treatment of prisoners from the use of torture to penal reform as well as major events in its history. Download or read book Pain and Retribution written by David Wilson and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2014-03-15 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, the Tower of London is a tourist site, home only to the crown jewels, but not long ago the imposing structure held traitors, political prisoners, and more, often on their way to the chopping block. Even outside of this famous building, prisons have changed radically since the Norman Conquest in 1066. In the first book on the history of prisons in Britain, former prison governor and professor of criminology David Wilson offers unrivaled insight into the penal system in England, Scotland, and Wales, charting the rise and fall of forms of punishments that take place behind their walls. Pain and Retribution explores prisons as an institution and examines how they are designed, organized, and managed. Wilson reveals that prisons have to satisfy the demands of three interested parties: the public, from politicians and media commentators to everyday citizens; the prison staff; and the prisoners themselves. He shows how prevailing concerns and issues of the times allow one faction or another to have more power at varying points in history, and he considers how prisons are unable to satisfy all three at the same time—leading to the system being seen as a failure, despite rising numbers of prisoners and growing funds invested in keeping them incarcerated. With intriguing comparisons between the prisons of New York City and Britain and searching questions about the purposes of the current penal system, Pain and Retribution provides unparalleled access to prison landings, staffs, and the people behind the locked doors.

This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: CHAPTER IV. Bulks. Every one has heard of the hulks: most of the holiday makers from the land of Cockayne have seen the convicts at work in the arsenals and dockyards of Woolwich or Chatham. Not every one, however, is acquainted with the origin of this system of employing criminals, and we shall therefore go briefly over the principal points in the hulk- system history in this country; the more willingly, as this method will best demonstrate the absolute vices of the present arrangement of the dockyard, and prove its unfitness ? as now conducted ? for a permanent working institution. The hulks were first adopted as a temporary expedient for overcoming a temporary difficulty: they have been continued from that utter repugnance to change anything which is once established, however bad, characteristic of the official routine of our government With it, whatever is, is right Up to the middle of the last century, England had been in the habit of shipping off its crime to its American colonies, much as it has more recently done to Australia. It was an original idea, that of the transportation system?one of which our country has a right to be proud. It is thoroughly English; for, notwithstanding all the advantages which have accrued to us from it, no other nation in Europe has had the sense to follow the example which we have set . Even the United States, with all their keenness, have missed this noble bequest from the parent country; utterly forgetting how much this national institution has tended to increase our virtues at home and our glory abroad. Well, if other societies will not evade their duties to the crime and criminals engendered in their bosoms?if they will not sow their festering corruptions broadeast upon the shores of infant and innocent communities?if they wi...

The House on the Hill tells the story of this remarkable institution, which popularised the dreaded treadmill, was the first women's prison, acted as London's remand jail for most of the last century and today is home to the Clink restaurant and National Prison Radio.
