"White empurpled shower Of mingled blossoms." Between the Moult, on the North-West, and the high promontory that terminates in the Bolt-head on the South-West, (which constitutes part of the manor of East Sewer, belonging to the viscount Courtenay, ) is a sinuous flexure called South Sand, similar to that South sand, aheady mentioned on the North-West side of Salcombe Castle. This is the re-commencement of the freehold of Edmund Pollexfen Bastard, esq. M. P. and is part of the manor of Batson before mentioned. Large quantities of sea-sand, and various species of the marine plants, Fucus, Salsola, and Salicornia, 0re.weed (commonly named Ore-Weed, ) thrown in by the rolling surge, are here taken at will by the occupiers of farms throughout the parish of Malborough, and carried for manure. The right is founded upon an unvarying custom time immemorial, undenied and uninterrupted, and consequently cannot now be shaken. A little further on the Western cliffs are rocks which overhang a small arenaceous recess, called Splat-cove, the general place of resort for Splat-cove. water-parties of pleasure to laud and take such refreshment as they bring with them. The Crithmum Maritimum, the true sea or rock Samphire for SamPliii'e pickling, grows abundantly in the crevices of these cliffs, and around the coast in general. In the lands above, and of the same name, a spot was fixed upon, in 1812, by sir Thomas Tyrwhitt, the gentleman usher of the black rod, to erect a marine pavillion, on the property of his friend Mr. Bastard. This intention however seems to be at length relinquished. Just within the Splat-cove rocks (towards the South Sand, ) is a subterraneous passage called Bull Bull-hole. hole, which the common people have an idea runs quite...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Garden History of Devon is a reference guide to historical sources for over 200 Devon gardens. It also provides an introduction for would-be garden historians on how to conduct garden research. The book is the result of an exploration of the archival resources of Devon's garden history; the objective being to provide signposts to research material for those interested in the development of Devon's gardens. The entries, arranged alphabetically, begin with a brief section describing each garden's history, amplified by quotations from contemporary travellers and diarists; following the descriptive sections are listings of documents, printed sources and illustrations relating to each garden. The greater part of this material is unknown to garden historians.

Book The Life and Times of Samuel Prideaux Tregelles

Download or read book The Life and Times of Samuel Prideaux Tregelles written by Timothy C. F. Stunt and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-12-03 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sheds light on the career of Samuel Prideaux Tregelles, and in doing so touches on numerous aspects of nineteenth-century British and European religious history. Several recent scholars have celebrated the 200th anniversary of the German textual critic Tischendorf but Tregelles, his contemporary English rival, has been neglected, despite his achievements being comparable. In addition to his decisive contribution to Biblical textual scholarship, this study of Tregelles’ career sheds light on developments among Quakers in the period, and Tregelles’s enthusiastic involvement with the early nineteenth-century Welsh literary renaissance usefully supplements recent studies on Iolo Morganwg. The early career of Tregelles also gives valuable fresh detail to the origins of the Plymouth Brethren, (in both England and Italy) the study of whose early history has become more extensive over the last twenty years. The whole of Tregelles’s career therefore illuminates neglected aspects of Victorian religious life.
