Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Kentucky: Embracing Gleanings, Reminiscences, Antiquities, Natural Curiosities, Statistics, and Biographical Sketches of Pioneers, Soldiers, Jurists, Lawyers, Statesman, Divines, Mechanics, Farmers, Merchants, and Other Leading Men, of All Occupations and Pursuits Much of the primitive history Of Kentucky, which would be exceedingly interesting even to the youth Of this day, is now forever lost, and lies buried with those venerable wit nesses who have long since passed from earth to that bourn from which there is no return. Many mementoes of the past, however, both useful and interesting to the rising generation, have been collected and preserved by the author, and will, in future, occupy a conspicuous place in history. Many things recorded in this volume were delivered me in my youth from the lips Of my venerated father, and from my uncle, and others who participated in the scenes of those times, and which would, probably, have ever been lost had it not been for my predilection for such knowledge. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " In 1908 John C. Campbell was commissioned by the Russell Sage Foundation to conduct a survey of conditions in Appalachia and the aid work being done in these areas to create "the central repository of data concerning conditions in the mountains to which workers in the field might turn." Originally published in 1921, The Southern Highlander and His Homeland details Campbell's experiences and findings during his travels in the region, observing unique aspects of mountain communities such as their religion, family life, and forms of entertainment. Campbell's landmark work paved the way for folk schools, agricultural cooperatives, handicraft guilds, the frontier nursing service, better roads, and a sense of pride in mountain life -- the very roots of Appalachian preservation.

Download or read book The Correspondence of Charles Darwin written by Charles Darwin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 946 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is part of the definitive edition of letters written by and to Charles Darwin, the most celebrated naturalist of the nineteenth century. Notes and appendixes put these fascinating and wide-ranging letters in context, making the letters accessible to both scholars and general readers. Darwin depended on correspondence to collect data from all over the world, and to discuss his emerging ideas with scientific colleagues, many of whom he never met in person. The letters are published chronologically: volume 25 includes letters from 1877, the year in which Darwin published Forms of Flowers and with his son Francis carried out experiments on plant movement and bloom on plants. Darwin was awarded an honorary LL.D. by Cambridge University, and appeared in person to receive it. The volume contains a number of appendixes, including two on the albums of photograph sent to Darwin by his Dutch, German, and Austrian admirers.
