Book Always More Production

Download or read book Always More Production written by Michael F. Weber and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ""Always more production" tells the fascinating history of the mining of iron ore at Cornwall, Pennsylvania. Mining began here in 1737 and continued for the next 236 years when the last mine closed. The Cornwall mines were some of the longest continuously operated mines in the United States and the largest iron mines until their production was eclipsed by larger mines in Michigan and Minnesota. Early mining was performed by a few handfuls of miners working for individual families like the Grubbs and Colemans. By the Twentieth Century, hundreds of miners and millers produced ore in Cornwall for the Bethlehem Steel Corporation. Over time, iron masters, companies, and corporations implored the miners to mine ever larger quantities of iron ore, hence the title "Always more production." By the time mining ended in 1973, miners had produced about 106 million tons of iron ore, along with large quantities of copper, silver, gold, and cobalt. Join the journey through the history, technology, and people that harvested these riches."--Page 4 of cover.

Book excerpt: Cornwall was founded in 1737 after a tremendous amount of iron ore was discovered in three hills. Mining started in earnest in 1742 when a charcoal furnace was constructed in Cornwall to smelt the iron ore. Operations of open pit and underground mining continued for more than 230 years until June 1972 when Hurricane Agnes flooded the mine. The iron ore was used to cast cannon and shot for the Continental army and later to construct our country's buildings, bridges, and infrastructure. Vintage images culled from area archives illustrate the mining history, community culture, and development of the borough of Cornwall.

Book Mining in Cornwall

Download or read book Mining in Cornwall written by L. J. Bullen and published by History Press. This book was released on 2004-09-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuing the 'Mining in Cornwall' series, L.J. Bullen depicts three mines from the Central Mining District. Most of the scenes date from around 1900 to the early twenty-first century. This was the period that saw the decline of the industry, but renews hope was generated in the 1960s with the much improved world price for tin. Some of the leading mining corporations of the world became involved. A great deal of exploratory work, including diamond drilling, took place and a number of mines were reopened. One entirely new mine was commenced. The sudden and dramatic collapse of the tin price on the London Metal exchange in October 1985 hit the world's tin industry severely and was a particular blow to the deep underground mines of Cornwall. Since that time the price has been depressed and never in its long history has the price for that metal remained at such a low level for so many years. South Crofty Mine finally succumbed in 1998 and was the last tin mine to operate in the Duchy. In this, his seventh volume, the author provides a remarkable portrayal of an ancient industry which is now consigned to history. However, the mineral resources of Cornwall are still considerable and perhaps at some time in the future a combination of different economic and political circumstances will bring about a renaissance.

Book The History of Mining

Download or read book The History of Mining written by Michael Coulson and published by Harriman House Limited. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE INDUSTRY THAT FORGED THE MODERN WORLD Throughout history metals and raw materials have underpinned human activity. So it is that the industry responsible for extracting these materials from the ground - mining - has been ever present throughout the history of civilisation, from the ancient world of the Egyptians and Romans, to the industrial revolution and the British Empire, and through to the present day, with mining firms well represented on the world's most important stock indexes including the FTSE100. This book traces the history of mining from those early moments when man first started using tools to the present day where metals continue to underpin economic activity in the post industrial age. In doing so, the history of mining methods, important events, technological developments, the important firms and the sparkling personalities that built the industry are examined in detail. At every stage, as the history of mining is traced from 40,000BC to the present day, the level of detail increases in accordance with the greater social and industrial developments that have played out as time has progressed. This means that a particular focus is given to the period since the industrial revolution and especially the 20th century. A look is also taken into the future in an effort to chart the direction this great industry might take in years to come. Many books have been written about mining; the majority have focused on a particular metal, geographical area, mining event or mining personality, but 'The History of Mining' has a broader scope and covers all of these essential and fascinating areas in one definitive volume.
