Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1907 edition. Excerpt: ... Record, 1865-1878, p. 174. Dr. Hanley explained that he thought it possible to support a first class college in Des Moines. Mr. Tilley thought there was a want of definiteness in the action of the convention. Mr. Prescott thought the Baptists of Iowa needed but one college; but it must not be expected that such an institution will come to maturity at once; it is a thing of slow growth. Thought the denomination was allowing itself to be outstripped by other denominations. He wished to see this body take hold of the matter and locate an institution somewhere. The resolution offered by Dr. Hanley was laid on the table. A motion made to go into committee of the whole, for a miscellaneous discussion of the subject of education, was lost. A motion to consider the resolution before the convention at Iowa City prevailed. The resolution is as follows: Resolved, That the sum of $50,000 be raised by the Baptists of this state, toward the endowment of a college, whenever any suitable locality for the purposes of the college, shall furnish the proper grounds and buildings, and in addition a fund of at least $50,000 as a further endowment. A motion to re-affirm the action of the convention at Iowa City, in relation to the foregoing resolution, drew forth a lengthy and animated discussion. Judge Mott spoke earnestly in favor of taking a forward step in the matter. He did not wish the matter laid over another year. He had long waited for the denomination to establish a college worthy of its name. if other men had time to wait, he had not. Prof. Scarff thought the denomination had squandered means and labor long enough. It ought now to devise more liberal means. Mr. Holmes believed the time already at hand for the church to take measure for the...

Book Historical Sketches of Iowa Baptists

Download or read book Historical Sketches of Iowa Baptists written by S. H. Mitchell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Sketches of Iowa Baptists: Compiled and Edited Under the Authority of the Iowa Baptist State Convection by Rev. S. H. Mitchell, Historian of the Convention With an Introduction by D. P. Smith, D. D Second. The reader must be reminded how ruefully condensed, much of such a history must be in order to at all touch pomts in them selves all worthy Of a larger place. In 1876, in one of the oldest Associ ations a committee was appointed to prepare a Centennial History of the Association. The chairman of that committee was a very intelligent minister and a scholar, not now in the flesh. After carefully looking Over the ground for a year, and taking in something of its dimensions he did not attempt to write a history but made a report in which he said: A history of the Association that would be at all satisfactory, must necessarily embrace an extent Of matter which would make a volume. For example. Theassociation, organized in 1839, has been perpetuated, through a series of changes, to the year 1877 (the date of the report). The law of its preservation is deserving of attention as well as the body of the principles involved in its organization. The names of seventye five churches appear on the record, having been in existence for longer or shorter periods. Their localities and the causes which effected their extinction, and other matter connected with their existence ought to be noticed. On these same records We find the names of 153 ministers of the gospel. Historical sketches of many of these men would be essential to the history of the Association. Other faithful laborers in the vine yard, both brothers and sisters, would need mention. The labors of these ministers and others furnish an exhibition of zeal, self-denial, and devo tedness and a constancy of faith and noble endurance for Christ's sake, which ought to have special mention in detail. The territorv at the time these elder brethren begun their work was largely in possession of various Indian tribes, and consequently uncultivated, and, though a beautiful country, was still a wilderness. Then it ought to be shown In the history that the distinguishing characteristic of the Association in point of doctrine is, as Dr. Mosheim defines it with regard to that long succession of ancient Baptists, ho lay concealed in almost all the coun tries of Europe, before the rise of Calvin and Luther and who held that the invisible church is inaccessible to the wicked and unrighteous, and is exempt from all those institutions which human prudence suggests to oppose the progress of iniquity, or to correct and to reform transgres sors. It will be seen by the above that an adequate history of a single association would require a volume of little less dimensions than that which has been practicable to us in sketching the whole state. After the printing of the first few forms the assiduous application of the con densing process was ever present as an imperative necessity. Book The Iowa Band Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Iowa Band Dear Brother: It was in November, 1843, that you welcomed to your home, your people, and the West, the brethren since known as The Iowa Band. At that time, as composing the ordained ministry of our denomination in the then Territory of Iowa, there were with you six others; to wit, Julius A. Reed, Reuben Gaylord, Charles Burnham, Allen B. Hitchcock, Oliver Emerson, and John C. Holbrook. From these, too, came a cordial welcome. This was twenty-five years ago; bringing us, and our mission work here, to the Silver Wedding time. It is usual, on such occasions, in the presence of friends whose sympathies make the joys common to all, to revive the history of the parties, and reminiscences of the past. In this little book, as a Home Missionary offering in honor of that noble Society which we all love, there is given, first, a brief history of the Band, followed by a few facts and scenes from out our common efforts; with such reflections, in passing, as by a review of quarter-century labors, are naturally suggested: all of which, with due thanks to the Master, you will permit, as one of the first Congregational Ministers of Iowa, and one whom we all love to call Father Turner, to be to you dedicated. One of the Band. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pilgrims of Iowa Mr. Turner closed his work at Denmark in 1868, but he did not close his life until 1885; so that I was his contemporary here in Iowa for seventeen years. I knew personally all the other patriarchs, Gaylord, Reed, Holbrook and Emerson, though Gaylord and Holbrook had left the state before I came. Before 1868, Hutchinson and Spaulding of the Band had died, and Alden and Ripley had returned to New England. The other seven of the eleven were still associated with Iowa, although just then E. B. Turner was in Missouri; all these I knew well, and some of them intimately. With Ephraim Adams and Salter, I was in close association for more than forty years. (i protest, however, in spite of many statements to the contrary, that I was not a member of the Band!) Meet ing Brother Adams for the first time at a joint session of the Mitchell and Garnavillo Associations, at mcgregor in October of 1868, I said, Well, I never will get acquainted with that man, so quiet, so stately and so sedate! But I did get acquainted with him. He gave me the right hand of fellowship at my ordination, and he became to me the brother of all the brethren; and he came into my life as no other man in Iowa has done. He selected me for his successor at Decorah, but the church did not ratify the election! He did not choose me as his successor in the office of superintend ent, but I am sure he was glad to have me there. Tears will come now as I think of the wounding of his dear, sensitive heart in that he was permitted to lead the forces only to the borders of the Promised Land of self-support.
