This book was released on 2016-12-23 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Memorial of the Congregational Ministers and Churches of the Illinois Association, on Completing a Quarter of a Century of Its History: Consisting of a Commemorative Discourse In that year, 1844, a General Association for the State was formed at Farmington. There were present at that meeting six ministers - Rev. Messrs. J. T. Holmes, R. M. Pearson, M. N. Miles, L. H. Parker, John Cross and myself, and about as many Churches were represented. This General Association has proved, as it was intended to be, a bond of union for all the Churches of our denomination in the State. There are now one hundred and ninety-five Congregational Churches connected with the General Association through the local Associations. In 1844, at the time of the organization of the General Association, there were but two local Associa tions in the State - the Illinois Association and Fox River Union. N ow there are ten local Associations. The increase of Congregational Churches has been gradual; probably about in proportion to the increase of population in the State. From 1833 to 1844, the increase was about five in a year, on an average. From 1844 to 1854, about six in a year. From 1854 to 1860, about ten in a year. The greatest number organized in any one year, was nineteen in 1858. There were eleven organized in 1854 and 1857 each. In his lettersto his wife, Scarborough's enthusiasm for the wonderful, verdant country was not carried over into his descriptions of the inhabitants. He was disappointed in the quality of the settlers for the most part. Describing them as lazy, ignorant, indolent, slovenly, and content to live from hand to mouth without necessities of life, he found them highly prejudiced against Yankees and Presbyterians. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Commemoration: Fiftieth Anniversary of the Organization of the General Congregational Association of Illinois Then consider the work among the European peoples which our Illi nois and the National Societies are getting hold of so grandly. Here in our blessed land we have come to have our own Germany, Bohemia, Poland, Scandinavia, Belgium, Austria and Italy. What a Divine interposition was that which brought our Theological Seminary into this many-tongued evangelism. It was just the lack of such training that kept our former work of this kind in a dead-and-alive condition. The only ministers we could get hold of had been trained under foreign or un-american associations, and they were apt to be perfumed with tobacco and with beer. These young men of sturdy physique, of strong mind, of warm heart, under the molding and assimilating influence of their professors and of their fellow-students, are coming forth a joy and a blessing to their people, our people, to lay their hand Upon us both, a bond of National and Christian fellowship. Then, there is our Chicago City Missionary Society, brought to the Kingdom for such a time as this, under the lead of its (mr.) Great-heart, Secretary J. A. Armstrong, with its exchequer running from twenty dollars to a year, and all of this additional to the sums already named, and yet for home missionary work in Illinois, in Chicago, at the very round-top of our Gettysburg conflict. In eleven years it has organized within the city forty-four Congregational churches, that now have members, seven of which have already become self-support ing, among them the University church, the Rogers Park, the Lake View, the California Ave., the Central Park. It has founded forty-eight Sunday-schools that now have scholars. It has purchased nine teen church lots, has erected twenty-three church buildings. It repre sents worth of property, having put in for the same It holds in trust eleven church sites, valued at It has aided fourteen other city churches, and has now under commission forty-six missionary pastors and sixty-one missionaries under over-sight. What a mighty reinforcement of the standing army of the State and National organizations Surely God is leading his people to know what Israel ought to do. Book Fifty Golden Years in Central Illinois

Download or read book Fifty Golden Years in Central Illinois written by Nelle C. Donovan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty Golden Years in Central Illinois: An Epic in Purple The hopes and success of the Church rest greatly in the long run on its faithful parish priests. Without them, Popes, Cardinals, and Bishops, however zealous, learned, able, and holy, can do but little for God's glory or for the good of men. They may plan wisely, may exhort elo quently, may direct and govern prudently, may have indeed in both head and heart, as they should, solicitude for all the churches, yet after all it is the parish priest who bears the brunt of the battle for good against evil, for truth against error, for virtues against vice. He is the Church's contact man with indi vidual souls. It is he who wrestles directly with the problems involved in the building and main taining both Church and school; who instructs the ignorant, strengthens the weak, raises the fallen, goes in search of the lost, rebukes the for ward, warns the reckless, inspires the good and faithful, who in a word, keeps alive and bright the fires of faith, hope, and charity. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Minutes of the General Association of Congregational Churches and Ministers of Illinois, at Their Twenty-Fourth Annual Meeting, Held in Champaign, May, 1867: With an Appendix The past year brings the churches of Illinois under renewed obligation to render hearty thanksgiving to the God of all grace, and to devote themselves with quickened faith and zeal to the work of the Lord. Although no sweeping and overwhelming tide of spiritual influence has pre vailed, the latter and former rains have been very generally participated in throughout the whole State. Some unmistakable indications of fertility are adduced by all the twelve District Associations, which compose this Body. Thus, Bureau Association reports the Pray/er Meetings as having been better sustained than ever. Similar testimony is given respecting the Central, the Central East, and West, Fox River Union, Elgin, the Northwestern and South ern Associations. For example, Griggsville reports the average attendance at the regular weekly prayer meeting as 90; the Tabernacle church, Chicago, is reported as sustaining ten regular prayer meetings; some juvenile services for girls and boys apart, attended by forty or fifty, besides the promiscuous gatherings. The Springfield churches have grown so much attached to their Union Prayer Meeting that it. Bids fair to become a permanent institution. Several District Reports allude to the remarkable spiritual power that has characterized the union of the Lord's people where they have met, irrespective of denominational distinctions, with one accord, in one place, for social worship.
