Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Greece, Vol. 1 of 4: From the Earliest Period to the Close of the Generation Contemporary With Alexander the Great It is that general picture which an historian of Greece is required first to embody in his own mind, and next to lay out before his readers - a picture not merely such as to delight the imagination by brilliancy of coloring and depth of sentiment, but also suggestive and improving to the reason. Not omitting the points of resemblance as well as of contrast with the better-known forms of modern society, he will especially study to exhibit the Spontaneous movement of Grecian intellect, sometimes aided but never borrowed from without, and lighting upa small portion of a world otherwise clouded and stationary. He will develop the action of that social system, which, while insuring to the mass of freemen a degree of protection else where unknown, acted as a stimulus to the creative impulses of genius, and left the superior minds sufficiently unshackled to soar above religious and political routine, to overshoot their own age, and to become the teachers of posterity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Ancient Greece, Vol. 1 of 4: Its Colonies, and Conquests The present History was undertaken, and a considera ble part of it written, many years ago, by the advice of some persons of taste and learning, who, having read my historical introduction to the Orations of Lysias and Iso crates, wished to see the whole series of Grecian story treated on the same plan. My situation, and my leisure, enabled me to meet their Wish; but before my manuscript was prepared for the Press, my studies were interrupted by the only employment, not enjoined by some positive duty, which I should have allowed (such are the sanguine hopes of authors!) to suspend my literary labours. Du ring that long interval, difl'erent portions of Grecian his tory have been ably treated in English, as well as in foreign languages. Yet, as most of those works still remain incomplete, and as none of them embrace the whole extent of my subject, or at all pre occupy my plan. Book excerpt: Grote's History of Greece is one of the classic works of historical interpretation and scholarship. George Grote - banker, MP and a founder of London University - was the first historian to give a high value to the Greek creation of democracy, and this aspect of his work is closely relevant to current debates about democracy in our times. This abridgement of the original twelve volume work, which was made in the early years of the century and published by George Routledge and sons, is now available again and makes accessible the essential Grote. In a new and original introduction, based on the latest research into Grote and into Greek history, Paul Cartledge places Grote's history in its intellectual context, discusses its salient features and traces its subsequent reception over the past century and a half.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A historical account of ideology in the Global South as the postwar laboratory of socialism, its legacy following the Cold War, and the continuing influence of socialist ideas worldwide. In the first decades after World War II, many newly independent Asian and African countries and established Latin American states pursued a socialist development model. Jeremy Friedman traces the socialist experiment over forty years through the experience of five countries: Indonesia, Chile, Tanzania, Angola, and Iran. These states sought paths to socialism without formal adherence to the Soviet bloc or the programs that Soviets, East Germans, Cubans, Chinese, and other outsiders tried to promote. Instead, they attempted to forge new models of socialist development through their own trial and error, together with the help of existing socialist countries, demonstrating the flexibility and adaptability of socialism. All five countries would become Cold War battlegrounds and regional models, as new policies in one shaped evolving conceptions of development in another. Lessons from the collapse of democracy in Indonesia were later applied in Chile, just as the challenge of political Islam in Indonesia informed the policies of the left in Iran. Efforts to build agrarian economies in West Africa influenced TanzaniaÕs approach to socialism, which in turn influenced the trajectory of the Angolan model. Ripe for Revolution shows socialism as more adaptable and pragmatic than often supposed. When we view it through the prism of a Stalinist orthodoxy, we miss its real effects and legacies, both good and bad. To understand how socialism succeeds and fails, and to grasp its evolution and potential horizons, we must do more than read manifestos. We must attend to history.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Greece From Its Commencement to the Close of the Independence of the Greek Nation, Vol. 1 of 4 I have also endeavoured to make the text of my Greek history a miniature reproduction of the materials at my disposal by observing the following rules: I make definite assertions only where the authorities allow it, and express myself in doubtful terms when there is more or less um certainty. This is not the usual method of procedure in the present day. But a historian of the first rank, Droysen, has recently declared that he can no longer give an unqualified approval to the method, so useful for enhancing the charm and force of a narrative, which represents the conclusions of research as historical facts. Download or read book History of Greece Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Evelyn Abbott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-12 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Greece, Vol. 1 Though we can add nothing to the existing records of Greek History, the estimate placed upon their value, and the conclusions drawn from them are constantly changing, and for this reason the story which has been told so often will be told anew from time to time, so long as it continues to have an interest for mankind - that is, let us hope, so long as mankind continue to exist. The present work is intended for readers who are acquainted with the outlines of the subject, and have some knowledge of the Greek language. It has been written in the belief that an intelligible sketch of Greek civilisation may be given within' a brief compass - not with the h0pe of throwing new light on 01d obscurities, or quoting fresh evidence where all the evidence has been long ago collected.
