Book A History of French Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of French Literature Classic Reprint written by Charles Henry Conrad Wright and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-12 with total page 978 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of French Literature HE lack of a convenient and yet comprehensive history of French literature, beyond the range of skeleton outlines or compendiums of facts, has long been apparent from experience to the present writer. On the other hand, excellent works in French, such as those of Brunetiere or of M. Lanson, are written from a standpoint unfamiliar to the English-speaking reader or student, and take too much for granted. M. Lamson's book is, perhaps, the best one-volume history of French literature in existence, but foreigners often find it difficult to handle. An effort is here made to meet the needs of readers in a work going beyond simple outlines, yet not pretending to specialisation in every period a thing which is impossible for one man now that we are, of necessity, either mediaevalists or moderns. The book might, perhaps, more fittingly be called a literary history of France, inasmuch as the relations have been emphasised of literature and social environment, and the Latin writings of the Middle Ages have been included. Accuracy has, of course, been sought as far as possible in view of the wide range of the subject. Yet the author does not aspire, as some do, to the merit of an absolutely independent judgment on every topic. On the contrary, he considers it the duty of the composer of a synthesis to rely, to a reasonable degree, on those who have spent months or years on individual writers whom he must perforce treat summarily. He sets himself down unhesitatingly as a pickpurse of another's wit the authorities from whom he has readily drawn will, it is hoped, be found accounted for in the bibliography. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of French Literature Instead of closing the survey, as do some books, with the decline of Romanticism, or as others, with that of Naturalism, the history of French literature has been traced down to the present day. It may be objected that living writers are too near to us to allow of an impartial and complete judgment on their works. No attempt has been made to pass any such judgment, but such an account of the French literature of today is given as may at least serve to indicate its general tendencies. Book A History of French Literature

Download or read book A History of French Literature written by William Albert Nitze and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-10 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of French Literature: From the Earliest Times to the Great War The present History of French Literature, intended both for the general reader and for students, does not aim to be exhaus tive. It is divided into three parts: Medieval, Renaissance and Modern; and within these parts it emphasizes in turn the chief literary movements and writers, leaving minor tendencies and figures out of consideration or mentioning them only inci dentally. Mere lists of names and dates, valuable as they are for reference, belong rather to bibliography than to literary his tory as such. Thus our aim has been to give a connected ao count of the main curren of French literature from the earliest times down to the present day. In this attempt we have had several further considerations to guide us. In the first place, the book is written primarily for American and English readers. The one key to literary treasures is not erudition but sympathy. Needless to say, we would instill in our readers a liking for French literature; but such sympathy will come only through an appreciation of the French, as distinguished from the anglo-saxon, point of view. Hence the introductory chapter on the Spirit of French Letters and, in the body of the book, the frequent references to What appear to be dominant French traits. Another result of this method is the attention we give to the historical and social background. Whether we have succeeded or not, we have consistently tried to depict for each age the historical and social elements that produced it; brie y of course, with the ex pectation that the reader will complete the outline by reference to works dealing directly with these subjects. Book The History of French Literature

Download or read book The History of French Literature written by Annie Lemp Konta and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of French Literature: From the Oath of Strasburg to Chanticler During several centuries these national and religious poems were orally transmitted from generation to generation until Charlemagne became the principal hero, his legend absorbing all others, and in the tenth century was born the chanson de gate of truly French character. A number of these chansons de geste were inspired by the oral traditions circulating during the Merovingian period, others were ih spired by the old Cantilenes. Our chansons de geste, there fore, says Leon Gautier, are military and not clerical, and owe nothing to certain Latin chronicles from which it is believed by some they have arisen. He tells us that the Chromque do Turpin is posterior to the first chansons de giants. The Chronique do Turpin and most of the analogous legends are the works of some rhetorician of the monasteries who copied without intelligence and without animation our first chansons de geste. F. Scholle, also asserts that the poems had for a long time been preserved by oral tradition before having been written, and that the various readings of the diflerent compilations are due partly to the intervention of the jongleurs and not solely to the copyists. Book History of French Literature in the Eighteenth Century Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of French Literature in the Eighteenth Century Classic Reprint written by Alexandre Rodolphe Vinet and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of French Literature in the Eighteenth Century Let us not consider as mere chance, gentlemen, a state of mind, which is easily explained. The seventeenth century is the logical sequence, the natural production of the sixteenth. In reference to philosophy and thought in general, the human mind always proceeds in this manner: it makes progress by antithesis and reaction, and resembles the pendulum, which unceasingly oscillates from right to left and from left to right. But the pendulum moves in a fixed space, and the value of one of its oscillations is constantly compensated by that of the other, while the action and reaction of the human mind do not entirely destroy each other, some quantity remains, and these quantities, added together, make up the sum of its progress. At the first glance, man seems to us to undo to the same extent what he has already done; but if we extend the field of our observation, we shall be convinced of the real and gradual advancement of human nature. Whether this advancement is for good or evil, is a different question. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Specimens Of French Literature From Villon To Hugo If in a collection printed from some hundreds of books and ms. Copies some mispri_nts have escaped my vigilance, I h0pe that the negligence will not be considered unpar donable. In a lyrical anthology published recently by the Editor of this book, the adoption of the plan of indiscriminate French, English, and Latin titles provoked some criticism. Its object is however sufficiently obvious. Had all the titles been French, it would have been difficult to distinguish the originals from those supplied by the Editor in cases where either none existed or the originals were too general for the extract or unsuitable for other reasons. Book A New History of French Literature

Download or read book A New History of French Literature written by Denis Hollier and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1998-08-19 with total page 1202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed for the general reader, this splendid introduction to French literature from 842 A.D.—the date of the earliest surviving document in any Romance language—to the present decade is the most compact and imaginative single-volume guide available in English to the French literary tradition. In fact, no comparable work exists in either language. It is not the customary inventory of authors and titles but rather a collection of wide-angled views of historical and cultural phenomena. It sets before us writers, public figures, criminals, saints, and monarchs, as well as religious, cultural, and social revolutions. It gives us books, paintings, public monuments, even TV shows. Written by 164 American and European specialists, the essays are introduced by date and arranged in chronological order, but here ends the book’s resemblance to the usual history of literature. Each date is followed by a headline evoking an event that indicates the chronological point of departure. Usually the event is literary—the publication of an original work, a journal, a translation, the first performance of a play, the death of an author—but some events are literary only in terms of their repercussions and resonances. Essays devoted to a genre exist alongside essays devoted to one book, institutions are presented side by side with literary movements, and large surveys appear next to detailed discussions of specific landmarks. No article is limited to the “life and works” of a single author. Proust, for example, appears through various lenses: fleetingly, in 1701, apropos of Antoine Galland’s translation of The Thousand and One Nights; in 1898, in connection with the Dreyfus Affair; in 1905, on the occasion of the law on the separation of church and state; in 1911, in relation to Gide and their different treatments of homosexuality; and at his death in 1922. Without attempting to cover every author, work, and cultural development since the Serments de Strasbourg in 842, this history succeeds in being both informative and critical about the more than 1,000 years it describes. The contributors offer us a chance to appreciate not only French culture but also the major critical positions in literary studies today. A New History of French Literature will be essential reading for all engaged in the study of French culture and for all who are interested in it. It is an authoritative, lively, and readable volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masters of French Literature For the general reader, I fancy such a his tory of French literature would be far more illuminating than some of the detailed hand books which bewilder the mind with thousands of names and titles, and brief, insufficient ah stracts of books great and small. There would be the difference that exists between a series of views from twenty mountain tops, each one within sight of its immediate neighbors, and the record made by a pedometer. Or, to vary this rather prolonged figure of speech which has helped us thus far, such a history would possess the advantage that a person gains from residence in a few foreign towns, as compared with spending an equal amount of time in rapid travel, from one meaningless hotel to another. This may not seem surprising when one thinks of the importance of the crisis through which France has just passed, but it is so when one realizes how that country had to exert all its strength to keep itself from being submerged; literature in such circumstances, is more than ever a luxury.
