Download or read book A Short History of Classical Scholarship written by John Edwin Sandys and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Classical Scholarship: From the Sixth Century B. C. To the Present Day Rome in 1527. This is followed by the subsequent History of Scholarship in Italy, and by a survey of the successive centuries of that history in France, the Netherlands, England, and Germany, with a brief notice of Greece and Russia, and Of Hungary and Scandinavia. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries the nations are reviewed in the following order: Italy, France, the Netherlands, England, and Germany. This order is, however, abandoned in the eighteenth, in which the influence of Bentley on the Greek Scholarship of Holland makes it historically necessary to place England immediately before the Netherlands. It has also been abandoned in the nineteenth, in the case of Germany. Hence the history of the eighteenth century in Germany is immediately followed by that Of the nineteenth in the same country. Finally, the history of the nineteenth century in England is naturally succeeded by that of the United States Of America. Une renaissance des etudes classiques s'est manifestee chez nous. Elle se distingue par Palliance des qualitls franfaises de clart'e et de mithode avec la solidite de Perudition et la connaissance des travaux itrangers. This century is the first since the revival of learning in which a serious challenge has been thrown down to the defenders of the humanistic tradition. But I think it will be found that the position of humanism in this country at the close of the century is much stronger than it ivas at the beginning. European scholars... find that they have to count with a new factor and have to recognize in our philological work a national stamp.
