Book A History of Civilization in Palestine Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Civilization in Palestine Classic Reprint written by Robert Alexander Stewart Macalister and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Civilization in Palestine It is a disastrous mistake to imagine that the aim of excavation is the discovery of contemporary written documents. They are most important, but it is very easy to exaggerate their value, especially when we are dealing with the ancient East. The monument of a vainglorious oriental king is not less fulsome, and not more convincing, than is a modern patent-medicine advertisement. The authority of a letter depends ultimately on the personality of its unknown writer. When (as has notoriously been the case in explorations in Assyria and Babylonia) tablets and bas-reliefs are made the chief purpose of the work, the humbler utensils that speak of the life and civilization of the country are apt to be neglected, and their essential value lost for ever by the destructive processes of the excavation itself. Book Palestine

  • Author : Nur Masalha
  • Publisher : Zed Books Ltd.
  • Release : 2018-08-15
  • ISBN : 1786992752
  • Pages : 372 pages

Download or read book Palestine written by Nur Masalha and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2018-08-15 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This rich and magisterial work traces Palestine's millennia-old heritage, uncovering cultures and societies of astounding depth and complexity that stretch back to the very beginnings of recorded history. Starting with the earliest references in Egyptian and Assyrian texts, Nur Masalha explores how Palestine and its Palestinian identity have evolved over thousands of years, from the Bronze Age to the present day. Drawing on a rich body of sources and the latest archaeological evidence, Masalha shows how Palestine’s multicultural past has been distorted and mythologised by Biblical lore and the Israel–Palestinian conflict. In the process, Masalha reveals that the concept of Palestine, contrary to accepted belief, is not a modern invention or one constructed in opposition to Israel, but rooted firmly in ancient past. Palestine represents the authoritative account of the country's history.

Book Thinking Palestine

Download or read book Thinking Palestine written by Ronit Lentin and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together an inter-disciplinary group of Palestinian, Israeli, American, British and Irish scholars who theorise 'the question of Palestine'. Critically committed to supporting the Palestinian quest for self determination, they present new theoretical ways of thinking about Palestine. These include the 'Palestinization' of ethnic and racial conflicts, the theorization of Palestine as camp, ghetto and prison, the tourist/activist gaze, the role of gendered resistance, the centrality of the memory of the 1948 Nakba (catastrophe) to the contemporary understanding of the conflict, and the historic roots of the contemporary discourse on Palestine. The book offers a novel examination of how the Palestinian experience of being governed under what Giorgio Agamben names a 'state of exception' may be theorised as paradigmatic for new forms of global governance. An indispensable read for any serious scholar.

Download or read book Hidden Histories written by Basem L. Ra'ad and published by Pluto Press. This book was released on 2010-08-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For thousands of years, Palestine and the East Mediterranean have been subject to constant colonial interference which has denied the indigenous population an independent, authentic historical narrative. Basem L. Ra’ad uncovers this history and begins the process of reconnecting it to contemporary peoples. Perceptions of the region have been influenced by the operation of "Western civilization" and by many other inherited cultural-religious preconceptions. The region itself has been disenfranchised and prevented from developing its own comprehensive cultural history. Ra’ad's findings are an important step towards reconstructing an alternative history, one which dispels many of the myths and traps relating to religions, languages, peoples and sites. This highly original work is an essential text for students of Middle Eastern history, politics and culture.
