Book A History of British Mammals Vol 1 of 3

This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of British Mammals, Vol. 1 of 3: Bats In my official capacity at the British Museum I have constantly been asked for the name Of a trustworthy book on the subject of British Mammals, and I have had to put off the enquirers with the promise of the present work, to the appearance of which every mammalogist, technical or amateur, has long been looking forward. To produce such a work is a difficult, though highly interesting task, which can only be efficiently completed in a large Museum. For this no one could be better suited than the author of the present work, who has for the last fifteen years worked constantly at the National Museum, not only on the British, but on all the European and Asiatic mammalia, and has written on them a considerable number of valuable scientific papers. He is therefore fully in touch with the literature of the subject, acquainted with all its recent advances, and in agreement with the principles of modern science. He has also had experience in the collecting and Observing of mammals in the field - at home, in continental Europe, on the Seal Islands of Bering's Sea, in Morocco, Kamchatka, and on the veldt of South Africa. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of British Mammals It seems to be fond of sweet things, for more than one observer has found it devouring the sugar placed on a tree trunk to attract moths,4 and Mr E. Bidwell5 saw one nibbling the owers of honeysuckle to get at the nectar. It will also consume aphides, nut-weevils, and caterpillars, and occasionally the eggs6 of small birds; but, perhaps on account of its smaller size, it does not appear to be so much addicted to a diet of esh or eggs as are the larger dormice of continental Europe. Retribution may sometimes overtake it when tres passing, for Mr A. H. Cocks once found one pecked to death in a thrush's nest. Like many other rodents this mouse commonly sits on its haunches when eating, holding its food in its hands. But it will also suspend itself head downwards by means of its small but remarkably strong claws, and even feeds comfortably in that position; it can run up and down the naked bole7 of a tree with astonishing rapidity. It is, besides, an active leaper, and springs from twig to twig for surprising distances. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of British Mammals, Vol. 2: Part I. Insectivora These four genera are typical of as many families, and since in dealing with them there arises no question of super generic importance affecting British natural history, it seems best to shorten the introduction to this order and to omit all technical descriptions of the families. This course leaves more space for the ampler treatment demanded by more difficult groups, such as bats, rodents, seals, and whales. Download or read book British Mammals Classic Reprint written by W. Percival Westell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Mammals Great Britain has some forty species of land mammals as against Germany's ninety and Scandinavia's sixty, while Ireland has only twenty-two. In Reptiles and Amphibians a small country like Belgium has about twenty-two species, while Great Britain has thirteen, and Ireland only four, of which none are Snakes. This extreme poverty has been accounted for by the destruction caused by the glacial epoch during Pleistocene times, and to some extent by the subsidence and flooding of the country which occurred during this epoch. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Mammals: Sixty Photographs From Life Otter (lutra lutra, Lz'nn). - This interesting animal is by no means uncommon on many of our streams, and if it were only legitimately hunted with otter hounds instead of being trapped and shot whenever the opportunity presents itself it would soon become quite numerous and my own experience is that on many streams it does very little harm to the trout and grayling, feeding largely upon coarse fish, such as eels - of which it is. Very fond - water voles, and the large fresh water mussels. Like most other animals. If obtained when a little cub, it will grow up quite tame and follow its owner about like a dog, and if trained to do so will even go into the water and catch fish for him. Otters often travel a long way from water, and very occasionally will take to evil ways, killing ducks, poultry, etc. They are splendid swimmers, as indeed they need to be if they have to catch a large fish in his native element. Book Catalogue of the Ungulate Mammals in the British Museum Natural History Vol 4 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Ungulate Mammals in the British Museum (Natural History), Vol. 4 The preparation of the fourth Volume of Ungulate Mammals was nearing completion when its author was struck down by the illness that proved fatal. With his characteristic devotion to work, he hardly allowed this to make any difference, under circumstances when most men would have considered themselves unfit for mental effort. It would perhaps have been better if the patient had allowed himself to rest, but the correction of the proofs went on until the task was completed, only two or three days before the end came, on April 16th. Mr. Lydekker, although not a member of the permanent staff, had been officially connected with the Museum since 1884. Only those who have seen the work from the inside will be able to realise the extent and the value of his services to the Museum, where his colleagues have the remembrance of a long and highly successful period of help unremittingly and ungrudgingly given. The present Volume includes the families Cervidae, Tragulidae, Camelidae, Suidae and Hippopotamidae, thus completing the Artiodactyla. Like its predecessors, it has been prepared by Mr. Lydekker. It was hoped that the Catalogue would be completed shortly by the publication of a fifth Volume, including the Perissodactyla, the Hyracoidea, and the Proboscidea, together with addenda to the earlier volumes. It is not possible at present to state whether this intention can be carried out. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Mammals: An Attempt to Describe and Illustrate the Mammalian Fauna of the British Islands From the Commencement of the Pleistocene Period Down to the Present Day To the accumulated and carefully sifted facts recorded by this formidable array of writers the author has ventured to add his own observations and theories. Although a good deal of his time has been spent in Africa, he has nevertheless from his youth up been a student of the British Mammalia in all parts of the United Kingdom. His first interest in British beasts was no doubt prompted by their aesthetic aspect, their beauty of outline or colour; and though he has since become entangled in the fascinations of comparative anatomy, the strongest attraction which beasts and birds still possess for him lies in the part they fill (or should fill) in British landscapes.
