Book Bethel Presbyterian Church East Orange N J

Download or read book Bethel Presbyterian Church East Orange N J written by David Olyphant Irving and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-19 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bethel Presbyterian Church, East Orange, N. J: An Historical Discourse Preached at the Twenty-Fifth Anniversary of Its Organization, November 10, 1895 But let us turn the pages of our history with a sense of humility rather than of self-glory. We are not to bring before us figures and comparisons to feed our pride and conceit, for our progress has been owing to Divine grace and goodness, and not wholly dependent upon our faithfulness and zeal. God often uses the weak things of this world to confound the mighty, so that there is no need of boasting. As we become somewhat encouraged over the retrospect and prospect, let us remember our own mistakes and neglects. If we, as members of this Church, had been more faithful, liberal, devout and earnest, would we not have accomplished greater results than we now behold? But we cannot alter the past. We can only read the facts as history time's slavish scribe records them, and allow them to make their own impressions upon us. Book Irish Presbyterians and the Shaping of Western Pennsylvania 1770 1830

Download or read book Irish Presbyterians and the Shaping of Western Pennsylvania 1770 1830 written by Peter E. Gilmore and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irish Presbyterians and the Shaping of Western Pennsylvania, 1770–1830 is a historical study examining the religious culture of Irish immigrants in the early years of America. Despite fractious relations among competing sects, many immigrants shared a vision of a renewed Ireland in which their versions of Presbyterianism could flourish free from the domination of landlords and established church. In the process, they created the institutional foundations for western Pennsylvanian Presbyterian churches. Rural Presbyterian Irish church elders emphasized community and ethnoreligious group solidarity in supervising congregants’ morality. Improved transportation and the greater reach of the market eliminated near-subsistence local economies and hastened the demise of religious traditions brought from Ireland. Gilmore contends that ritual and daily religious practice, as understood and carried out by migrant generations, were abandoned or altered by American-born generations in the context of major economic change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid 19th century many Germans migrated to the Midwestern United States. Many of them were influenced by the Reformation as well as the theology of John Calvin. When many of them settled in Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota, Adrian Van Vliet, a minister of First Presbyterian Church in Dubuque, Iowa made it his mission to train ministers for these new immigrants. Out of this effort came the University of Dubuque and the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary. A second result was the banding together of 85 churches who formed the German speaking Synod of the West under the authority of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA). For nearly 47 years these churches reached out to the new immigrants and acted as an agent of change to not only evangelize them but also to introduce them into the American way of life and the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) This is the story of that 47 year journey, from 1912 1959. Layout and Photographs by Jean E. Straatmeyer
