Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History and Description of Modern Wines The separation of all knowledge which is of a useful character from abstruse terms or pedantic conjectures, seems demanded by the present call for works which convey as much as possible of fact. Man is become a more active animal than he ever was before. While the mass of human life appears to have received a prolonged duration, it seems given only to stimulate activity, and leaves the impress upon the mind, owing to its redoubled occupation, that years fleet with more than their former rapidity. The wines of the moderns are, there is no doubt, much more perfect than those of the ancients, as far as can be discovered by any thing authentic, which has reached the present time. Excerpt: ...cliffs which are accessible, are planted with vines. Wherever there is a slip or fall of the cliff leaving a few feet of surface, a mere ledge, to which there is no other mode of access than being let down by a rope, even there the vine is set. The fondness of the Spaniards for this branch of husbandry is so strong as to make them, in some places, neglect every other species of cultivation, thus habituated are they to that which long usage has made to them a second nature. The red wines of this province are not remarkable for quality. The Malvasia made at Sitgas is considered very good, but the manufacture of all kinds is negligent beyond example. The exportation, though considerable, has been chiefly for mingling with other wines of less strength. From Tarragona five thousand pipes of wine, and four hundred of brandy, are annually shipped off. These wines are of good body, but manufactured in the wretched mode of the country. The grapes are used without selection, and no pains are taken in the cellar. Yet the wine finds a tolerable market. Borja produces a luscious white wine. The country about Tarragona, on the road to Barcelona, is almost wholly a wine country. Matarohas some excellent-vines, but the wine as usual is made in the most careless manner, and neither fined nor racked. From Valencia a considerable quantity of Beni Carlos wine is exported, chiefly to France, to mingle with claret for England. It comes from a town of that name, to the eastward of the city of Valencia. There is also a wine made at Beni Carlos, of tolerable quality, consumed upon the spot. The wines of La Torre, Segorbe, and Muviedro, are generous and good. The Beni Carlos wines are also bought up to mix with Port in the English market, and are sent to England...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hand-Book of Wines, Practical, Theoretical, and Historical: With a Description of Foreign Spirits and Liqueurs From the extensive nomenclature of wines, it has been deemed desirable to treat of such only as are known in commerce and consumption. To describe every variety, therefore, would be foreign to the purpose; and even if it were accomplished, it would doubtless prove uninteresting to the majority of readers. Book The Wines of Georgia

Download or read book The Wines of Georgia written by GRANIK and published by Academie Du Vin Library Limited. This book was released on 2024-02-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: - Georgia has a fascinating wine background, claiming to be the birthplace of wine - The historic Georgian qvevri method has seen a rise in popularity due to the currently fashionable natural winemaking movement - Georgia's rich culture puts wine at its center and wine is uniquely important to its people - Lisa Granik is a Master of Wine with long connections with the country, making her ideally placed to comment on its wines Georgia has for the last 25 years been resurrecting its unique winemaking tradition and rediscovering the distinctiveness of its native varieties. A handful of producers in 1997 has now exploded to more than 1,300. Wine is arguably more important to Georgia than to any other country and its people firmly believe their country to be the birthplace of wine. Yet Georgian wines are still largely unknown in the West. Lisa Granik, who began visiting Georgia 30 years ago, starts The Wines of Georgia with a brisk tour through the history of the country and analysis of its complex geology, before moving on to consider Georgian wine culture. She explains not only winemaking methods and viticulture but also the centrality of wine to Georgian culture. Georgia can claim more than 400 native Vitis vinifera varieties; here Granik profiles the most commonly planted grapes, as well as the many 'lost' varieties being revived. The second half of the book details each of the major regions. Of Georgia's 20 PDOs, 15 are in the east, in Kakheti. With a history of wine education dating back 900 years, this prolific winemaking region is home to the qvevri, the conical clay vessel that for many represents Georgian winemaking. Stretching west, the regions become more sparsely populated; some places are still pioneer wine territory, with more amateur and self-taught winemakers. Granik provides details on the most significant producers, along with tips on sites of interest and places to eat and stay, for those visiting the country. This definitive book on Georgian wine is an essential text for anybody studying or making wine today.
